Vegas didn't exactly have great goaltending either, although I guess Hill wasn't cheap. Not sure I'd call Carolina lucky, they dominated.

I don't disagree with you, but I think a team like Florida will probably see it that way. They'll still sign someone like Skinner or whatever.
What I meant by the Carolina comment, was they got lucky the goaltending was strong for them this year when they needed it. Of course their play on the ice was dominant, one of the best teams I’ve seen in years. But you still need goaltending and a waiver claim won them the cup. That’s a bit of luck going with a great team.

They did catch luck on solid goaltending playing above expectations. Their D is very strong too and they play a system perfectly suited to their team, and one they've been working for several years.

To Toronto-
Adin Hill
Noah Hanafin

To Vegas-
Anthony Stolarz
Oliver Ekman-Larsson

Hanafin-Raddysh
Mccabe-Tanev
Andrae-Carlo

Honestly, I can’t think of a better bottom six C in terms of what we need. Speed, size, age, physicality, quality hockey player, Right handed. Alas, the distraction around it would be too much.
Carolina was about to sign him last summer and then they received a ton of fan push back and people were threatening to cancel season tickets when it leaked so they didn't go through with it. Interesting that the two teams that were willing to take these guys on played each other in the finals.

Friedman says Werenski MIGHT be available. Don Waddell is considering it after the Sens traded Brady. 2 years left on the contract.

I'd trade Knies+ for him.

For sure.

Given the difference in term Werenski + 14OA for Knies makes a lot of sense..

Locking up a 37 year old goalie makes no sense when you have youngsters like Hildeby and AA close to the big club
I'm not advocating to sign Bob, but I think there needs to be some break pumping on having the likes of a AA/Hildeby combo. You can see warts in AA game still that he needs to work on. There's way to much movement in the net and was exposed abit in the AHL cause of that.

I think adding a player like werenski with the 14th overall is worth the risk. Worse case he doesnt agree to an extension with us we do a sign and trade to recoup young players and 1st rounders. In this scenario its likely Matthews leaves as well.

Love AA, but he needs 1 more season in the AHL IMO. He has great athleticism, tracks the puck very well, but he over commits way too much. He would get destroyed in the NHL, right now. Reminds me a bit of Hildeby from a couple of years ago. Hildeby took a couple more years in the A to iron out the kinks in his game and looked like an NHL goalie last year.

If you can get petterson for cheap even at full cap you do it.

McKenna. Matthews. Nylander
Knies. Petterson. Maceilli
Robert's. Tavares. Cowan.
Lorentz. Domi. Joshua.

I'd be shocked if Maccelli and Robertson would be here in this scenario. There's a lot of skill in that group, I'd be for it, but you gotta think they will want a little more greasy guys in the top 9 to compliment an addition like EP.

Do not like one bit. Need to move out Maccelli and Robertson. Need some bite, need more speed. Need less Domi.

I don’t disagree but Stolie is still under contract for multiple years and signing a 37 year old Bob to a long term or even medium term deal is not smart

Hildeby needs waivers this year so you need to see what he can do and run a Hildeby-Stolie combo.. AA stays in the AHL as a third stringer. QO Ersson and see if he can get through waivers.

Even trading assets for Helle or someone else seems futile because the roster has other holes that should be shored up first especially when the Leafs do not have a ton of assets to leverage without completely gutting themselves

I'm in the camp of seeing what veteran leftover options are available in goaltending, a week after free agency. They'll still be some ok names, that we can get on the cheap.

Keep in mind, we really are looking to fill the #4 and potentially #5 goalie spots here, we don't need to get fancy.

This goaltending thing is crazy talk. So is trading Knies really, the odds someone will bend over and give us the deal we want is pretty slim.
That summary was a little misleading in terms of it saying the Leafs could go either way on Knies.

The main point Friedman made was that the Leafs don't feel any need to trade him, and would only do it in a move where you'd look at it and say "oh yea, that makes sense".

So I wouldn't call them 50/50 on it, more that every player has a price, his is high, and it's unlikely to be met.

Trading Hildeby to sign a 37 year old moving on from a team with no goaltenders should be a pretty significant red flag. I'm questioning the report here.
I could see it happening. The leafs won't go into the season with Stolarz and hildeby as their goalies. I expect the latter to be traded, and the former to be the backup.

We'd potentially be giving up Knies to get a player that's gonna ask to be traded in a year along with possibly Matthews.

I don't know, I get the idea of it is super tantalizing but we just lost Marner for almost nothing and Werenski and Matthews are both going to be deciding by next summer where they wanna go. I guess we do have Chayka who seems like a guy who isn't afraid to quickly flip Werenski next summer if he needed to but it's all so risky with these American stars.

Hellebuyck is intriguing because he controls where he's going to go as well. Wasn't that good last year and isn't usually a playoff performer but the regular season it's hard to find a better guy
