That does hold a valid concern, when taking into account that he'd be coming to Toronto, where 100 point players' dogs are getting death threats. He's under contract to a team in Russia for another year or two. I think there would have to be a mutual termination of the contract, which would be unlikely, the team would have to buy him out, or he'd have to buy out his contract himself.
While a good contender for the role, you'd have to ask if the team could put up with the inevitable social storm that would result.

Olivirri is pretty close, but he doesn’t have the offensive upside of Wilson, still would be a great pick up if it was possible, which it isn’t.Mathieu Olivieri would be the alternate guy you’d want. Doubt he’s available either.
Run him another season at number two C and he’ll be soap by Christmas, and no Olympic break for him to recharge the battery this year, I’d rather see him play less and play well all season long, plus he’ll be better on the PP.A 70 point center is not a 3C in any world.
All sorts of possibilities, who has the stones to pull the trigger is the question.3-way trade with Rielly going to San Jose, Pettersson coming to Toronto, and some stuff going to Vancouver.
I'm indifferent on Mason Marchment. Another Toronto guy who I think would be nice but Idk if he's Chayka's type of player, meaning if he's too slow.
But at the same time, we are adding a speedy star-level talent in Gavin McKenna to the forward group, so maybe we could use a power forward like Marchment in the top 6 to balance it out?
He would essentially be a Jarnkrok replacement. An upgrade though. IMOAnother Jarnkrok as far as I'm concerned
Friedman 32 Thoughts: (copied from reddit)
On the Tkachuk trade and Werenski/Matthews rumors:
Other things:
- Says we knew more trade requests were coming, the problem for the other Team USA players is that no matter what they say now, no one will believe them.
- “There are rumors about Werenski. There are rumors about Matthews…With Werenski there’s been reports about it..the Columbus fans have pushed back hard. Matthews I think he starts next year in Toronto”
- At 5:20 the specific Werenski quote from the title. Friedman says Columbus is in the same situation as Ottawa with Werenski having only 2 years left: “There’s been some noise around Werenski..I think what happened here with Tkachuk probably makes Don Waddell think a little bit”.
- Mentions Columbus signed Coyle and they want to win now because they want to keep Werenski.
- On how the Brady trade happened: Staois visited Brady in NJ and walked out of the meeting thinking “we have to do this”. Ottawa made the choice. Brady didn’t ask to get traded now.
- Post-Olympics it became a problem in the room. The reaction to the USA win had a huge impact on everyone, fans, Tkachuk himself, the players. Said a player told him it was very intense for a few weeks.
- Friedman expected the trade to happen at the Draft but it was going to get out this week, Staois wanted to do it before it leaked.
- He says the reason why it stayed quiet this long it’s because it involved the two teams in the Finals. But it was clear Tkachuk’s preference was FLA.
- 17:20 Says some of the American players that won the Gold medal “felt a bit hated” in their Canadian markets.
- Yzerman knew about Larkin’s request around the same time as Staois did with Brady. Friedman thinks Larkin gets traded, they don’t want to bring him back. But he says he doesn’t think Yzerman would accept the return that OTT got.
- Says Minnesota prefers Larkin over Tkachuk.
- On potential offer sheets: “I’m hearing the same rumors that there are some coming” but also says every year we expect it and never happens.
- Florida goaltending: doesn’t see how they can do Hellebuyck trade unless they are willing to move someone they were not willing to trade to Ottawa. Sounds like they’ll look at a guy like Ersson.
- Bobrovsky: looking for a 6 years deal. Carolina wasn’t the only one in trade talks for Bob at deadline, a couple more contenders involved.
- Says most people would be surprised if John Carlson doesn’t end up in Tampa for an higher AAV than Raddysh, but shorter term.
- Says Toronto is looking in goal. Mentions they’ll look at Binnington, Hellebuyck and Bobrovsky. Friedman says he wouldn’t be shocked if Bob ends up in TOR, says Stolarz won being Bob's backup.
- Chayka is sitting on 1-2 other moves he could do to really change the team. With Knies “it could go either way”, they don’t feel pressured to move him.
- Tarasenko: has changed agents again. Not going back to MIN.
- Nichushkin: started to hear his name out there. COL looking for cap flexibility.
- Trouba: going to market.
- Doesn’t think Gudas to TOR is happening.
Very good player for a 3/4C role. Someone I thought might make a good addition to us. Given some of the backlash Hart received in the playoffs, I’ve begun to second guess whether signing him wouldn’t become a problem.Michael McLeod would be free and exactly the kind of centre that we need:
- Excellent on faceoffs
- Very good defensively
- Plays PK
- Very good skater
- Good hands and capable of producing
Not sure of his status regarding NHL availability though... has he been through a screening by the big bad Bettman?
Edit: Apparently, he would be eligible: Following his acquittal, the NHL reviewed the matter and officially cleared him to return to NHL play on December 1, 2025.
The ring leader of that case has zero chance of ever being a Leaf and rightfully so. The guy is a piece of shit.Very good player for a 3/4C role. Someone I thought might make a good addition to us. Full NMC for Werenski. If the guy gets asked for his list its likely going to be Tampa, Florida, Vegas, Minnesota.
Wouldn't worry about it too much.
Ask Edmonton about going cheap on goaltending. Had they a quality goaltendy, we’d probably be talking about multiple cups.Bobrovsky in Toronto would be one interesting move lol... I respect Friedman here but no way they get desperate for a 37 year old goaltender looking for a retirement paycheck. I really don't see it making sense contract wise.
I get that Florida will be pretty good but it would be very interesting if they cheap out on goaltending. Not saying it's the most important part of the team, but it can easily derail a season.

Honestly, I can’t think of a better bottom six C in terms of what we need. Speed, size, age, physicality, quality hockey player, Right handed. Alas, the distraction around it would be too much. They won't touch those players with a ten foot pole -- with good reason. The distraction from on and off the ice would be pretty huge. There are so many hard working bottom line players to give an opportunity to.
Even in the AHL playoffs Marlies fans were booing heavily Cal Foote, they know.
Lol there's always a limit what those teams can do but yeah maybe Tampa could make it work.
Ya. But Freddy was lights out until he hurt his knee/whatever and Bussi was quality too. That’s a gamble. Carolina got lucky this year, but it’s cost them in the past multiple times.Cheap goaltender is what the Hurricanes had. I guess if you believe in your team and structure, you can believe in cheap goaltending. None of the 3 goaltenders in Carolina had a SV% above .900 in the regular season lol
Personally, if you believe AA is legit.Cheap goaltender is what the Hurricanes had. I guess if you believe in your team and structure, you can believe in cheap goaltending. None of the 3 goaltenders in Carolina had a SV% above .900 in the regular season lol
Funny enough, I easily see Florida going after Skinner.

Yep, always a limit but then the player could just choose to stay and run out their contract if Waddel or any of the other USA guys GM's dont get 'enough'They won't touch those players with a ten foot pole -- with good reason.
