Completely agree on Wright but for reference I would prefer Wright+7 over a package of Rinzel+4 from Chicago.

I still wholeheartedly believe that Seattle team with +Knies&Samoskevich -Schwartz&Wright is picking 8-10OA next year.
I definitely take 4th overall + Rinzel over Wright + 7th overall. Wright could really break out on the leafs and I could be very wrong but as it sits the Hawks package is better.

Bobrovsky makes zero sense to me. Rumours are he's after like 6 years X $7M? I wouldn't even take him at half of that, for 3 years X $3.5M. He was a BAD starter last year, and is 38 years old this training camp.
He wasn’t much better than Stolarz last year. This kind of deal makes no sense at all to me . Totally agree don’t even want him at 3.5

Bob can play a lot, which I think is part of the allure. He hasn't played under 50 NHL games in forever. Most seasons he gives you 80+ starts with the playoffs.

He turns 38 in September.

It largely depends who is available at 4. It is looking likely that Malhotra will be available at 4 - do they prefer Malhotra/Rinzel over Verhoeff/Wright?

John Tavares is the 2C. We're looking for a 3rd C
Wonder if this is part of the reason they are thinking of trading Knies. Cowan, McKenna LW (even though Cowan can play RW). But maybe they also want to move Tavares to LW much much sooner than later.

It blows my mind why this would be a disastreous issue to go with a goaltender you spent a few years developing, who showed promise, and keeping your AHL MVP as your #3. Wanna guess how many games Jakob Dobes and Brandon Bussi played in their first full seasons?

How do teams develop and promote goaltenders? Just trade AA right now if there isn't some ability to let him be in the NHL in the near future.

Stolarz isn't perfect but he's signed and when he's on he's typically quality. That's the guy to punt if you want to add a more reliable veteran.
I think the disastrous issue is having to turn the net over to two rookie goaltenders for 55-60 games in a season where there is ALOT riding on the line.. You bring up Dobes & Bussi, neither one of those teams have their #1C future on the line if it goes poorly. There's a lot more pressure on this season then any other season.

I'm not suggesting Toronto won't have a path for them to be a NHL goalie. I just think it's not a smart move to have two rookie goalies that going to be essentially you're starting goalies because Stolarz is going to get injured 100%.

Regarding Stolarz, there needs to be a stopgap in front of the rookies that will actually be able to play when needed. Stolarz was awful last year for Toronto in the 26 games he was available for us. And for the record.. I am NOT saying to get Bob.

To me moving Knies has always been a 3-part return. So both packages still need that missing 3rd piece added. From Chicago that's Oliver Moore, from Seattle its Jake Obrien, from Montreal its some combination of Hage, Zharovsky, and Reinbacher, but that's a different package considering there's no top-10 pick. Same with NJ - the original proposed/ rumoured deal was Nemec, 12OA, and Mercer. Lukewarm on that one too.

If anything, the market right now supports a higher return for Knies, since the FA class is extremely weak and Knies is on such a fantastic long term contract. I simply don't move him for anything less.

I take Rinzel+4 from Chicago.
there is a chance Ried drops to 4
1. McKenna
2. Sten
3. Malhotra
3. Ried

Knies-Matthews-Wright
Tavares-Pettersson-Nylander
McKenna-Hayton-Cowan

5C in that lineup, 4 (not Matthews) of them can or have played wing in the past.

That's all fair. I think Carolina had plenty on the line to perform. Montreal gave their guy a shot. That's all it takes. You think Montreal is scared to give Dobes the net now despite wanting to improve on their previous season? There's pressure on a lot of teams.

Zero reason why they can't go with Hildeby + AA as their depth combo. Hildeby could be our starter as early as next year. Trade them both if you don't believe in them. You can easily add a journeyman goaltender in those depth options in case Stolarz implodes again.

I would aim for Reid/Smits + Moore + 37 if we have to do this trade.

In fact, just do it all in one

Knies + Rielly ($1.5m retained) for 4th + Moore + 37th + rights to Mikhaeyev

The proposed package had a 3rd pieces.
