GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Xenforo Cloud is upgrading us to version 2.3.11 on Monday July 20, 2026 at 12:00 AM PST. Expect a temporary downtime during this process. More info here
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
I guess my problem with this logic is I don't see why Dallas would part with Harley except for Werenski.

It made sense to be after Knies as a cheaper Robertson replacement but I don't think you move Harley like that.... Upgrades on Thomas Harley are hard to find
Believe it or not Harley seems very unpopular among Dallas fans (overpaid, underperforming, vanilla...)
His name is out there, so he might as well ask to be moved. Nill might have enough with players with NMCs, so he is quite desperate...

We haven't had a Werenski caliber D in Toronto since Salming. Would be massive to get him.

With him blocking a trade to Dallas, and obviously being picky about where he goes, the one thing if he comes here is that you have to think we have a pretty good shot at re-signing him (and Matthews), as long as the team is good and the overall direction is positive.

My thread regarding not doing a deal with Bob was removed but the facts remain.

He is too old for term

He declined last year

It's risky with our kids development

The prices sound outlandish

It should be avoided save for 1 year maybe. I wouldn't.

That is just as important as getting Werenski and what he brings. It will lock in a core of Matthews, Werenski, Nylander, Mckenna, and Raddysh. Thats a franchise 1C, 1D, two 1W and a top pair D in Raddysh. The only thing missing is a permanent 2c long term who wr hopefully have in TLK.

The "core" has failed since 67

34 and 88 are not waiving

Enjoy the ride . Every year is different.

I remeber the cup as a kid. You will get used to disappointment.

That's sports
I expect little to nothing so I won’t be that disappointed if once again they shit the bed, this is the prudent attitude to take if your a life long Leaf fan.

We need you to convert your negative energy about Bob into positive energy about Werenski. :sarcasm:

Bob for 4.5M × 5 years ain't bad. Trade that contract to a cap floor team in a few years.
That’s assuming he doesn’t get a NMC, which he will most definitely get, best outcome is Robidas Island for the latter half of his contract.

Got to believe Chayka is talking to both Dallas and Columbus working both of them against each other at this point. Werenski wanting to stay East will hurt the return Columbus gets. How many teams realistically have assets to give, can compete after the trade and have the need for a number 1. Tampa, Toronto, Carolina, and maybe New Jersey. The teams that miss out on Werenski can then circle back to Dallas on Harley.
I could see the Leafs offering something like Knies, Hildeby, Rielly, and picks/prospect and it might be the best package.

The lightening dont have the assets to beat a Leafs package. Toronto has Knies, Cowan, Danford, Hildeby TLK, a 1st two 2nds. Bolts have Moser and not a lot more.

I can guarantee you that if Toronto does acquire Werenski today, you're going to be reading later today that TOR just gave up a unicorn and other good assets for a two-year wonder who's a prima donna and will leave in 2028 anyway and that they somehow made their team worse today and for the future... lol.
Don't forget, Werenski would suddenly go from top 5 dman to "outside the top 20".

There was once a time where team ownership controlled the fate of the players, now it’s the players who control the league, hopefully the pendulum stops swinging back and forth and common sense becomes the norm. I hate that it’s been one or the other because the fans are the one’s who truly get screwed over.

lol... yes.

He seems like a darling on this website. People recognize him as one of the best defenseman in hockey. I never see much criticism of him (granted, I don't follow Metro division discussion closely).

Things will change drastically if he becomes a Leaf.
