Trade Matthews and Rielly and use those assets to keep building with the young guys we already have. Trying to build around 3/4 of the core that has failed for 9 consecutive playoffs is straight up STUPID. Giving up a large chunk of what's left of our good young players and picks is straight up INSANITY.

At least the Oilers can make the case to try and run it back with their core who have had back to back Stanley Cup finals appearances. Why in the HELL would you want to continue to try and build around a core that has had two 2nd round appearances in nearly a decade?? Pure insantiy.
That isn’t going to happen. It was made pretty clear they have no intention on rebuilding so why focus on it.
I’m not even saying you have the wrong idea but it just isn’t an option that management nor ownership are considering at all.

The core you're talking about won't be the core for long, and isn't even the same core from years past. Marner is gone. JT is older and a secondary piece. Rielly is likely traded. What's left is Matthews and Nylander.

The new core is going to be built around McKenna. Cowan, Knies, and potentially Danford are all part of the younger core, but yes one or two of them (not McKenna) may be traded for a #1 dman who who fits seamlessly into both the "old" and "young" core. You're acting like Matthews and Nylander are the only guys on the team and/or will be the only guys left if they trade for Werenski.

A team of McKenna, Cowan/Danford, Werenski, Raddysh, Matthews, and Nylander is very different from years past. Ditto on a team that has McKenna, Cowan, Danford, Knies, Raddysh along with Matthews and Nylander. That doesn't even include the changes still to come.

~6 hours until the craziness begins.

Kinda hard to hypothesize about potential signings and roster construction, when there's so much uncertainty around whether we're keeping Rielly, rumours about trading for Werenski, etc.

If we move Rielly and don't get Werenski, the blueline is a big priority in free agency.

If we trade for Werenski, that almost certainly means Knies is our the door, which makes the forward group more of a priority.

Names im generally interested in:
  • Shea - good all around defenceman that can move the puck. Shoots left, but can play either side.
  • Blankenburg - good underlying numbers and considered one of the best value adds this offseason. Likely bottom pairing RHD, but who can play higher if needed. Can also move the puck better than Carlo/Benoit.
  • Ferraro - I'm less confident in him, I just think there are a ton of examples of D who had bad underlying numbers when playing for awful teams, who then looked great when moved to a better team. Is he one of these guys? If so, could be a great value add - I'd defer to the scouts/analytics people to figure that out.
  • Bjorkstand - we could use a RWer, and he's quite versatile and could play anywhere in the top 9. I'm a little more hesitant about Arvidsson due to age, and Mantha due to potential contract vs his very inconsistent career. Bjorkstand at age 31 seems like the more reliable option.
  • R. Suzuki - great buy low option for a centre who's never been given an NHL shot, and might legitimately have 3rd line C upside. At minimum, would be hoping he could play as a quality 4th line C that can play the PK, and is I think a better option than Quillan.
  • Kurashev - unqualified RFA C who has had some pretty solid offensive numbers this past season and in 2023-2024. We need centre depth, though he's unfortunately not a shutdown C / PKer.

So far one journalist put out Werenski “might be willing to play for the Leafs.” And there was no credible source behind it. Where are you getting he only wants to play for the Leafs? Thats fantasy.
You might want to recheck where you are.......Leafs home board

Sure our defense would be greatly improved, but that doesn't change the fact that most of our core that couldn't win with almost a decade of trying in the playoffs is still here. Until that changes, then the Leafs will continue to not do much in the playoffs especially when they're all a decade older.

The "core" has failed since 67

34 and 88 are not waiving

Enjoy the ride . Every year is different.

I remeber the cup as a kid. You will get used to disappointment.

That's sports

Prayer group back at it today praying for sensibility over irrational reactionary signings that we regret a week after.

Bob is ok, just not an overpay or for so long that he gets in the way of the coming of McJesus. May the spirit of Odog guide us through this and see the light.

Happy Canada Day!

I hope we don't sign Bob.

We have so many other needs and cap space is needed elsewhere.

But as usual and it's happened for decades now , the leafs will waste money and assets on older players who supposedly provide grit and leadership and then a yr later we will have threads and threads of how bad they are and our GM sucks.

A player refused to go to such a powerhouse organization like Dallas and wants to play for the Leafs or Tampa?

Another player wanting to be closer to family, so his family is happiier

Yes. This is and has been the curse of the Leafs now for decades. They are incapable of getting this pattern out of the DNA.

Nobody will be upset at a 1 year Bob overpay to take a gamble on him. He looked pretty done last season though, so who is driving this crazy?

With news coming out overnight of a Bob contract at least sounding somewhat rational I still hope it's max 2 years. Reason being is I think the Leafs should be prepared to keep as much cap space open as possible going into the summer that McDavid, Matthews and I guess Werenski are free agents.

I mean, the news from Mirtle was that it would be less than the numbers previously reported, but weren't those numbers like 6 years X $7M?

If you materially cut those numbers down to like 4 years X $5.5M, it's still awful (given age, last year's performance, internal alternatives, etc).

Would need to get it down like like 1/3 of the reported numbers, to like 2 years X $3.5-4.5M, to start looking reasonable, and I don't think there's a chance it's in that range.

Unless our GM is playing 4D chess and we are just a bunch of dummies, it makes little sense

Now rumour is 3 yrs , 21 mil

Hopefully Edm outbids us as I think we are ok in goal.

We just have too many holes

But I keep on going back to Belfour when he signed here at age 37.
Fans were happpy

Still remember Belfour hated the shootout and basically did the Ken Dryden pose on them. He hated it decided games that is a team game

Bob for 4.5M × 5 years ain't bad. Trade that contract to a cap floor team in a few years.

I would do my due diligence on that and have real pros, tending coaches, scouts look at him closely. He was not the same even last year. What do you do if it's not even a 1 and done contract? What if it falls flat year 1.
