GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

My gut is telling me IF the leafs trade back into the top of this draft, we stun everyone by double dipping offense with Bjork rather than taking a pick of the litter of dmen. I think we’re desperately pushing to get another top pick for him.

Thats the kid that has the kind of ties to Sundin that people assume Stenberg has… kid is legit, could fill another glaring hole for us going forward.

.... since when did Sundin become a prospect whisperer?

If we trade into the top 10 it will most definitely be for a d-man

I was just about to write that Eddie came when he had down years and 37/38 yrs old and ended up being great for us.
So why not Bob.
But by that logic any goalie that had once been good but was bad at age 37 should be a smart signing for a multi year deal. Eddie is an exception, not a typical example. Even really good goalies like Quick and Cujo fell off hard around that age. Bob wants 4 years with a solid AAV so if he declines at all, or even maintains his last season he puts a crater in their cap.

Eddie went from Dallas to a better defending team but Bob comes from a 26.8 SOG a night club vs 32.4 for Toronto. The Leafs can be vastly improved from last year and still put Bob in a worse environment than he has seen in a few years. I guess its possible he could warp back to his 23-24 level and I will cheer for that to happen if they get him but anything more than 2 years seems like begging get railed.

I understand dealing Knies, I absolutely do not understand dealing him for 4OA

We're apparently trying to win now, how do you win now trading for a pick that won't be at Knies level minimum for at least 2-3 years
Completely agree. What are we even doing if he’s traded for a futures package?

Trade him for a young top pairing guy or happily keep him.

Maybe Knies for

Peterka + Desnoyers + 17th OA + Hayton would be a good move.

Its missing the premier dman though But we add a very high end C prospect 1 year into his development
Maybe take out Peterka and add Simashev? Might be a bit much though, probably have to remove the pick at that point

This kid is an absolute gamer and plays bigger than he is. I’ve watched a ton of tape on him. I think he has the highest upside out of anyone outside of McKenna this year.

I think he fits the mold and identity of the type of team we are trying to build and would be a great piece to help kickstart that identity. Sundin is here to help reset the culture, this guy played in his backyard and excels on that front.

Laugh now but especially if we see a d prospect attached to the pick, don’t be shocked if this is the move.

With gross overpayments for Byram, Nemec and Eklund recently done my asks have gone up

Sabres: Mrtka + 4th OA + Ostlund/Kulich

Columbus: Mateychuk + 14th OA + 27 1st rounder + Voronkov

Utah: Simashev + Desnoyers + 17th OA + Crouse/Hayton

Seattle: Wright + 7th OA + Dunn + McCann

San Jose: 2nd OA + 9th OA + Graf

Nashville: Wood + Martin + 11th OA + Molendyk

New Jersey: Bratt + Meier + 12th OA

If you are dealing Knies for 4th OA then deal Matthews and Nylander as well.

Id happily rebuild, but the Woll deal + Raddysh signing of course means we arent doing that this year.

Taking 4th OA and subtracting from our roster for a year or two before one of the big 3 D make the team is a super risky and hard to stomach move

I'm not sure some folks would handle if the Leafs got the 4th only to then trade it before the draft - something I could see happening if they want to get another 'win now' top pairing D man and the other team doesn't have a pressing need for a winger like Knies

Chayka is probably dangling Knies just to quickly introduce himself with the other GMs and break down the supposed barriers Simmonds reported. Im sure almost every GM has reached out.

I went away for 10 hours and I expected a trade from us the way the insiders were talking but nothing...

It's boring when other teams are doing stuff and you aren't

His stats and age don't merit more than a 1-2 year contract at like 5M

Anything beyond that and you question Chayka.

I don't think last season necessarily fully erased how he played the previous two years before that - including his 16 wins and a cup in the playoffs in 24/25.

That said, if it's a multi year deal (assuming more than say 2) it becomes probably Chayka's biggest gamble as GM for better or for worse
