we'd prob need to throw in a prospect or 27th OA to even it out and include all but don't really need Schneider if it comes down to it. but a 2OA is rarely moved and NY should try to make splash after Knicks win. Drury has to be under some pressure.

Rather than give up Knies, Draft Stenberg, sign Mason Marchment for 2 x 8M (big increase from his 4.5 and an overpay for shorter term) as a UFA and keep #9, 27, 62, etc for D. I wouldnt be surprised to see grier try to add marchemnt on a short but big contract given his age, but also our ample cap space and the Marchment connection to the Sharks.

Mantha is another hulking W grier could target on a short term big $ deal. Grier has functionally unlimited cap space this year and similarly huge next year. I would be pleased to get a little bit more size and experience in the top 6 to give Warso some flexibility.

To be honest, at this point we should be past having to egregiously overspend to lure players nor am I interested in players just looking for a bloated payday.

We have 46M in cap space this year and 86M next year. What does it hurt to overpay a good vet for a short term deal?

If Rielly comes, thats up to 7.5. Graf might be up to 5. kessel up to 5. Mukh, up to 2. Ostoy, up to 2. stenberg would be 1. That still leaves around 25M under the cap. Even if you add 15 for mack, 10 for Smith, 5 for asky, an a few other deals, it would still leave some 25M next year too.

It would suck for grier to just waste over 20M in cap space or use it by adding $10M of dead space like Price or Ellis for a mid round pick. I'd much rather add a quality piece on a short term deal.

No, I do not buy that Mantha is a legitimate 30 goal, 60 point forward; he's 32 and has seen his shooting percentage almost double over the last three years; that's a big sample but he's 32 and often injured, he's going to be just a second Toffoli making $7-8 million over 3-4 years, and he's likely to decline like Toffoli too. I'll pass. Marchment just isn't that good and is going to cost the same for the same term.

We're likely not getting these guys for a one year, even two year deal, so we're just burning cap space, and they're not realistically meaningful upgrades - hooray, we've moved Sherwood down to the fourth line where he belongs, but now we have three Toffoli-quality wingers eating up playing time, not being easily movable because nobody wants a $7 million boat anchor, and generally just holding our actually-talented young forwards back.

A young, quality forward? Sure. A fourth liner better than Goodrow and not too expensive? Sure. We don't need to spend money just for the sake of spending money and only marginally improving the team, if at all, because we happen to have cap space for now (and that's cap space that is rapidly going to disappear as our young players get extensions).

You make good points, and I agree that I would not hand either or them any more than a 2 year deal (OK, maybe 3 if absolutely necessary to Marchment, but no more) since the cap structure changes dramatically when Misa, Cherny, Dick, etc need to get paid.

However, injuries and strugglers are inevitable, so having depth is paramount. Looking at the top 9 last year, they missed a a lot of games be that injuries to Misa, Ekund, Smith, Cherny, and even a few games off for Toff and Wennberg....

Having top 9 depth is a very good thing, so I do not worry that Marchment would somehow demote anyone for most of the year. It would also take a little pressure off Stenberg if he struggles right out of the gate. Instead, the top 9 would have one good injury/struggler replacement built in.

Basically this a Stenberg for Knies deal. (the second part is doable regardless of what they do with #2).

3 years of Stenberg at 1M, followed by RFA. or 5 years of Knies at 7.75, followed by UFA. If cap hit is irrelevant, it's a reasonable play. If it does matter, it may be considered bad management. How much is 6.75M in cap space for 3 years worth?

I am definitely intrugued by Knies. Is he good enough defensively? And, why would he be on the market anyways?

If you want a fascinating turn of events, consider this:

1) #9+#27 + Bystedt for Knies.

2) Then flip #2 to Buffalo for #4 and #20+#45.

3) Sharks pick Reid at 4

--> End Result: Sharks get Knies + Kesselring + #45 for Eklund, Bystedt, Haltunnen, and Svoboda.

They end up the #20 pick they started with. Maybe they can package that with 45 (and 62?) to move up to 13 or 14 and catch a faller like if Rudolph or Gustaffson slip through the top 12.
