9+27 actually matches up almost perfectly in value with pick 5 according to Puckpedia’s draft value chart. Outside of picking up an impact D, the Dream draft scenario would be coming out with Stenberg and one of the top 2 D. It’s actually within reach if the Rangers want more picks. I know I know, Sharks would probably have to add, but they’ve got the pieces if the Rangers are interested

Grier exits draft week having denied the Blackhawks Stenberg, drafted the reported top defenseman (or at least neck and neck with Reid) on their list and upgraded Eklund for a younger power forward signed to an insane value contract who was created in a lab to be Willmack's LW

I still think verhoeff is his #1 D target

If we trading 2oa I'd hope GMMG finds a way to bring in more than Knies, if he could work some magic to loop in Nikishin, and still at least getting a Lin level prospect (assuming 9 is moved too), then yeah I could be into something crazy like that; Knies does have a pretty appealing contract for what he brings

Nothing considering there's no chance the cap ceiling is relevant to us in the next 3 years

As for why the Leafs would trade Knies, they're fishing for an overpay. 2OA would be that in an abstract sense but considering how bad this draft class is and that we don't need another smurf winger and we would still end up with Carels I'm fine paying it.

You make good points, and I agree that I would not hand either or them any more than a 2 year deal (OK, maybe 3 if absolutely necessary to Marchment, but no more) since the cap structure changes dramatically when Misa, Cherny, Dick, etc need to get paid.

However, injuries and strugglers are inevitable, so having depth is paramount. Looking at the top 9 last year, they missed a a lot of games be that injuries to Misa, Ekund, Smith, Cherny, and even a few games off for Toff and Wennberg....

Having top 9 depth is a very good thing, so I do not worry that Marchment would somehow demote anyone for most of the year. It would also take a little pressure off Stenberg if he struggles right out of the gate. Instead, the top 9 would have one good injury/struggler replacement built in.

If we need a injury/struggler replacement, we have the AHL. We don't need to be blowing cap space just because we have it to acquire mediocre wingers with term.

Our focus is on 2030, not 2027. I do not care about struggling to make the playoffs in 2027.

You might be right. However, if you are, that really boils my blood. You got the majority of your top 6 forwards costing you, basically, nothing including one of the best players in the world at 900k. I understand being just at the cap floor when your goal is not winning as has been the case the last four seasons.

But, the goal now must be winning now AND in the future. thus spending to near the cap just allows you to add talent for free (well, for Hasso's $). I understand not handing out 7 year deals, but anything 2 years or less seems zero risk with definite reward.

Why waste 20M in unused cap space when you can add some talent around them? And, such players are also easy to trade at the TDL for picks. For example, say we sign marchment for 2 years, 8M per. Then, he plays well, but the kids are ready to take over completely. You can flip him, with retention and get more picks.

The market for cap space is saturated now, so Grier cannot get a return like he did for Walman or Ceci. The market hasnt yet properly inflated contracts, though we are starting to see it. Excess cap space can no longer be "sold" for early picks. Instead you get 5th rounders for $10M dead space. So, now is the time to spend the space on real players and try to increase wins now, while also adding players who might be flipped for real value (like 1sts) at the TDL.
