GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Yup. If Knies is being traded, then it has to be a bonafide top pairing D coming back.

We may not get that either but the player(s) need to have that upside at least. Nikishin could evolve into a great top-4 - he has good potential. But he's probably a 2nd pairing guy. We could use one, but I'd rather try and dangle Carlo and an asset than Knies.

Nikishin seems like a good option but I dont want to pay a kings ransom for a heavily sheltered #6Dman

All the tools are there though. Maybe 1st + 2nd + prospect?
People throwing picks like candy. Is there an asteroid hitting earth or something i'm not aware of ? Because, some posters are acting like next year is the last NHL season ever...

No free agents, a ton of cap space and some teams believe it or not want to improve. So I think it's just a shift in the ability to add talent to your team and the best way to do it is using picks.

if this is the basis of the trade then fire chayka, have to get back Nikishin and Blake MINIMUM, otherwise we will regret this deeply
I could see another piece (or couple) going each way, but it doesn't feel like it. Perhaps, Unger-Sorum + a draft pick.

I think we have to accept that positional priority here may indicate that a #1 likely may not be available, but possibly a player that can grow into it, like Nikishin.

Taking into account the history of this franchise, we should (legally) forbid trading 1st round picks. PERIOD

We can do better than Nikishin, he definitely was the weakest in the cup run and didnt show that offensive upside he had really to any degree.

Personally I dont want to trade Knies unless we get a pristine Center or D-man back, not a B+ level D-man and some change

Don't think Knies needs to go for a d-man, Knies + for J.Roberson or similar is something you could consider if Toronto is willing to pay him his money.

What about Knies for Marchenko +. Just because Marchenko needs a new deal that would cost more. Better balances our LW/RW divide and can be a similar player.

Still don’t get why MGT would even consider trading Knies unless it is a massive overpayment.

In this AM era, where literally nobody is accountable of their plays and rarely speaks up about the team and players needing to step up. And when some players do, most of the time, these said players ended up playing a subpar game following their statements of ‘We need to be better bc we were crap.’

Only ONE player make the ‘We need to be better!’ And actually delivered the next game with a hat trick and OT winning goal while smashing everyone in sight and chasing every loose pucks. That’s Matthew Knies.

Unless the players coming back have that mentality or an overpayment like Hartley or Faber. I just don’t see how a team would trade someone like that.
