They will have a cap issue when Mikheyev comes back.
When Mikhayev comes back, Ritchie could also end up in the press box.

I would do a 2 for 1 deal or a 2 for 2 deal where they take back less salary.
If they package Holl+Ritchie thats 4.5 M. Get back a 3 to 3.5 M player back, or 2 players who make that much... solve the cap problem and hopefully the player/players coming back contributes more than Holl or Ritchie... or at least are a better fit.

Here is an example of how this could work....

  1. Crouse, Lawson
  2. Lyubushkin, Ilya ($675,000 retained)
ARI

  1. Ritchie, Nick
  2. Holl, Justin
  3. Der-Arguchintsev, Semyon
  4. 2022 2nd round pick (TOR)
Dermott traded for a pick a second round pick....

Now we have $4.6 million in cap space.... say we bring in a guy like Connor Murphy, or Chiarot, a big physical RD.. and we easily have the cap room... We still have depth, and if they believe that Liljegren and Sandin are permanent roster fixtures, a guy like Lyubushkin can be used as a #7 for the depth.

Now I'm not suggesting that this is how this could happen... and we can argue on the value of the deal to Arizona, or cost to us.. but who cares... those players in, those players out, whatever a cost for a Murphy like player, and we probably have a better team.

Isn't Demers still a FA? Couldn't we just try and sign him cheap if we needed a bottom pairing guy/depth D man? Also, I'm sure if Dermott is available we could get a depth defenceman in that trade pretty easily. I do wish we could pick up Demelo in a trade somehow though.

Rielly-Demelo
Muzzin-Brodie
Sandin-Liljegren

Looks like a pretty good blueline for the next 3 seasons.

Probably someone Keefe would trust more on the PK/tougher minutes. Dermott doesn't seem to have much leash if the report is true and Holl is struggling.

Hypothetically, say you package Dermott with Ritchie or Engvall, that's 3M to 4M in cap space out the door. Maybe a target would be Stralman (with retention). That's the one RD that comes to mind right now.

Overall... seems weird though. I don't get it. Only way it makes sense is in the scenario I just listed above. Removing a defenseman for just a pick and nothing tangible back makes little sense to me... but maybe I'm not as high on our Marlies option as they are.
Maybe there is a veteran Rd that's available that we don't know about .

Sounds like the Leafs are trying to lock up Campbell. Wonder what that deal would look like.

not exactly. We could waive engvall if we wanted. He has been fine but it would get us under

Not suggesting trading Matthews at all but if a hurt Eichel is able to get a package like the proposed Calgary offer, just imagine what a healthy Matthews could fetch, my goodness

I doubt Tkachuk is gonna want to stay in Buffalo if that trade goes thru.

If I'm Buffalo I'm flipping him asap, I wouldn't want to give him that next contract while im rebuilding

That Calgary Eichel package is pretty bonkers. Then again, centres of his caliber are the rarest thing in the league.

At his best he's a PPG franchise level 1C, how often do you get those?

It took us a decade of suck to find a new one

Maybe, though the Sabres could just trade him as well for even more futures

That what I'd do

That Tkachuk contract situation dampens the situation I bet. $9M QO next year which leads straight to UFA. What team would move significant pieces if Sabres wanted to trade him? Why not just wait a year and see if you can get him in UFA? If you are planning on trading for him, then he must want to play for that team to sign a long-term contract. This means he CAN pick his destination. Otherwise, you just gutted your future for one year of Tkachuk. He holds leverage here; I'm not so sure if he should be part of the package tbh.
