I prefer Holl to Dermott. Though we are seeing the benefit of defensive depth right now, allowing Holl to take a seat and seeing results.

I'm interested in what is being dangled to make them consider trading him right now at the start of the season.

I'd probably roll the dice on this.

Both are struggling. I imagine Anaheim prefers the younger player at this point.

I can't even for a second imagine why Anaheim would do this trade. Ducks had Nick for years, and traded him away... I doubt they want him back, let alone in a trade for a kid who was the best scorer last year.

They must really be liking what they are seeing out of Liljegren if they are willing to move RD depth

I don't see it right now. Seems like a dumb thing to do. I like Liljegren, but removing someone like Dermott or Holl seems like playing with fire.

I couuuuuuld see Dermott packaged with another player and a pick/prospect for an upgrade... maybe.... but that upgrade is going to be very hard to find in the limited cap space we have. Not to mention who the hell would be willing to trade us said player?

When we lose a defenseman to an injury (it will happen) without Dermott, we're going down to Mennell, Kral, Rubins, Biega or Dahlstrom on the depth chart... A little iffy to say the least.

I liked Mennel and Kral but it does seem like a bold decision

Also what would we be after? Our top 6 looks good and the defense has solidified

Probably someone Keefe would trust more on the PK/tougher minutes. Dermott doesn't seem to have much leash if the report is true and Holl is struggling.

Hypothetically, say you package Dermott with Ritchie or Engvall, that's 3M to 4M in cap space out the door. Maybe a target would be Stralman (with retention). That's the one RD that comes to mind right now.

Overall... seems weird though. I don't get it. Only way it makes sense is in the scenario I just listed above. Removing a defenseman for just a pick and nothing tangible back makes little sense to me... but maybe I'm not as high on our Marlies option as they are.

People will cry about not having depth and then suggest we dump Holl for a pick out of the other side of their mouth.

I'm all for trading Holl but you should be getting a capable defencemen back either in that trade or in a corresponding move.

Like I've said about, this smells like a two part trade to me. The Leafs have identified a trade in principle, to bring in a D man that they believe can improve the team. One has to be moved out in a separate transaction. I wouldn't worry about matching cap space, between Dermott/Holl and an incoming player, as there could be more moving pieces here.
