How does either our goaltending or depth look like a disaster?

Having a 1G that has never had a 1G workload and a backup that has never played in the NHL seems pretty bloody disastrous to me

Go on, give me a stat that makes that look like a great idea?

Taking cap from the goaltending, defensive and offensive depth for a top 6 forward when we already have 40M of our existing cap tied up there also seems bold to put it mildly, never mind the assets required to pull it off

Miller 50% + Schenn
For
Holl + Engvall + Robertson/Amirov/Knies + 22 1st + 23 2nd that can become a 1st based on playoff performance/re-signing.
I know it’s steep, but it sets up the team so well this season and next.

I will say JT Miller has been probably Bennings best acquisition for the Canucks over his bad tenure. I didn't think he was that good to throw a 1st round pick at the time but he's been very good. It doesn't outweigh the mountain of errors they have done though. That team desperately needs a new GM and a new vision, but that's a whole other talking point.

JT Miller would be a huge acquisition. That feels like a very steep price compared to many other recent trades but he's been a PPG for the last few seasons and if you get them to retain 50%, that's huge.

I just don’t want to be accused of offering too little in a four quarters for a dollar trade, but I think adding a ppg hardnose gamer is the kind of “do or die” move you make to show the ultimate faith in the group. Schenn is the perfect 7D and a good story coming full circle.
Maybe the conditional pick isn’t needed. Just a 2nd, or a prospect not from that top tier group I listed along with the 1st and their choice of the big 4 kids.
Holl and Engvall I think don’t add much and are there for roster and cap balancing. Maybe Vancouver can reclaim value from them

Could be a legendary trade that completes the team, with us having multiple deep playoffs runs including a cup or two

Or we could see, another collapse which would trigger a major retool if Miller doesn't work with our core players and his emotional attitude isn't appreciated.

Dubas would be betting everything on that trade, and the team does look quite good in the regular season so it is tempting, but again it's risky still. Dubas and the rest of the management would have more insight and knowledge to decide if that is a deal worth making or not.

We traded most if not all of last seasons picks and a bunch of this seasons picks, we have picked once in the first round over about a four year period

We don't know if any of those prospects are good enough yet

Oh Jesus, I'm a big meanie who points out our goaltending and depth looks like a ******* disaster put together with band aids and superglue

Colorado you say? They haven't exactly started like a house on fire, goaltending hasn't exactly stood on its head and scoring depth a bit of a problem all of a sudden?

I will give my own quote since you like them

"We have and failed, pretty spectacularly"

Instead of doubling down on failure let's try something different, like using resources on areas of need like depth scoring and goaltending which would be significantly cheaper
You look at my lineup that has Kerfoot & Nylander on the 3rd line and suggest that there isn’t depth? Honestly bro…

I feel Miller brings exactly the kind of game this team needs. Maybe an ornery prick who can score at ppg levels can be the kind of guy who drags the other top players into the fight so to speak.
Right now there is 3 maybe 4 forwards who are tracking towards hhof careers based on production, ability and past success (jt’s golds) locked in for 3 seasons. You need to maximize their potential as a group these upcoming seasons and let the chips fall where they may. Miller or not lack of post season success over the next couple years will mean a grenade is set off in the Leafs side of MLSE so you might as well push your chips in.
the 22 1st is 3-4 years away at best, 23 2nd even farther, it’s only one of those top prospects so you still have the other 3 (forgot Niemela) and only so many holes to fill.
Lots of teams continually turn their non nhl assets into nhl pieces And don’t fall off a cliff (Pitt Tampa Vegas) why would we? Our best players are 24-28

Our goaltending is....very good and very cheap.

Seems like the opposite of disastrous.

He’s referring to my projected 22-23 line up I posted a page back that has Campbell making 4.16 (25m 6 years) and a league minimum filler (kallgren) it was a 20 man roster that has two placeholders for completion purposes (Robertson & Kallgren) . with 1.4 in cap to upgrade either or both spots or carry a spare and upgrade one (maybe you can squeeze value for all 3, say Schenn comes back with miller so 800k for a 7D leaves 600k to upgrade one or both placeholder spots with $1m buy low candidates/euro or ncaa FA’s or reclamation projects on a show me deal.
The line up is basically what we have today, but with jt miller & Robertson in place of Ritchie & Engvall. It’s quite absurd to suggest the depth is worse.

I mean wouldn’t another 1st round exit kinda end dubas anyways???
I think there some trades dubas wants to make to acquire some draft capital back and give us cap space but something like trading for Miller might be a yes by many, specially if it’s for more then a season
And if doesn’t work we can trade him next year at deadline and get a 1st back? BUT do it now! Don’t waite
That’s the kind of manouvering I’d love to see

and another Brodie to play with Reilly to complete top 4

tanev type? Just go for it already
Holl, mrazek mykayev can all go

Honestly bro, you're talking about trading a top 4RD with some value, one of our best forward prospects, and possibly 2 first round picks for JT Miller at 50% no wonder those Canucks fans love you

Your also playing Matthews with Jack ****, if that's your definition of depth we can play Matthews and Tavares with Jack **** and put Marner on the 4th line
Depth all over the place

Yeah, you should probably read the thread before you start handing out opinions
Holl is trash, cap ballast really, his value is around a 2-3rd at best, this isn’t at best. JT Miller is a ppg gritty 2way forward that would thrive and dominate with a strong froward group with a team competing for a cup.
I don’t have marner on the fourth line, he’s on the second with bunting and Tavares, the fourth line is Kampf with the two geezers, a specialist line with a shutdown C an agitator and a responsible scorer. Very similar to now. while they’re on an 8-2 streak. Kase isn’t jack shit, he’s a former 20g winger who has started to come around recently potting a few goals since moving up the line and playing with some talented guys. mid day that ppg JT miller and Ondrej Kase are pretty good linemates especially if they’re spreading out the offence.
You could easily stack the lines and still have good depth.
JT miller, Kerfoot, Kase & bunting are pretty good “depth”
Blake Coleman who’s half the player miller is was traded to Tampa for a 1st and a very recent former 1st round prospect . We need the cap space for them to retain for this and next season as well. Not to mention in my proposal but forgot to include in the line up was Luke Schenn coming back as well to fill the role of 7D this and next season for a very paltry 850k.
You seem really angry.

Adding Miller would be huge but IMO he would cost too much and even more if you want them to retain 50%. Pretty sure Holl and Engvall don't move the needle and I am not sure we have the prospect to peak their interest. Horvat would be another player I'd be interested in but I won't hold my breath.

Horvat would have been a fantastic 2C behind Matthews if JT wasn't around.

I also thought about how ROR would have also been great but likely would have had to sent Kadri the other way back in the day and I think we had some other rough contracts.

JT hasn't been bad but 23M between 2 centres is rough, only 1 playoff series win combined.

i was saying miller for Reilly in off season but now they he's resigned that dream is probably dead
unless you start looking at Nylander as the center piece not sure there is a deal there anymore
Myers might be an interesting add with retention but not sure how that happens unless you go Kerfoot, Holl or Demott + pick/prospect but that's a lot

JT Miller would be a fantastic add for 2 runs. Especially at 50% retained. I imagine the cost would be quite large though.

if you are going to be throwing away a top prospec, a 1st, a 2nd and 2 roster players, it had better be for a top 4 defender that is controllable, and knows how to defend, else, you are just adding to our surplus and taking the puck out of Matthews/Tavares's hands ...Miller's top asset is his 1 timer on the PP ...we dont need that, he is a less talented Nylander. he would be nice to have, but, if far from a 'need'

if you can get him for Kerfoot and Holl, then sure, but, he's not the player you toss your best assets at. he is a solid 20+ 50 pt 2nd liner

We don’t need Defense. We need scoring depth. We didn’t lose to Montreal or Columbus because we didn’t have a mutant on the back end two handing guys in the knees, we lost because if the big 4 aren’t going there isn’t enough jam up front to get goals. JT miller is precisely that guy.
Holl & Engvall are cap ballast. None of Amirov Robertson or Knies project to be better than middle 6, and you still keep 2 outta the 3. A first is a first, heck all it got us last year was nick foligno, adding to that to get an impact forward at half price for two runs is the price you have to pay.
Jersey got two firsts of value for a half retained Blake Coleman. JT is twice the player Coleman is.
Maybe it’s one asset rich, but it’s better than most of the suggestions here of dumping the roster players i mentioned for useful pieces without adding value.

Last year I was all for trading picks at the deadline cause we had just taken 12 players in the 2020 draft. A year later, we only had 3 picks in the 2021 draft and currently only have 3 in 2022. This time around, I'd rather trade the prospects. I think if you rotate and have a balance between picks being your capital one year and prospects the next, it would help in terms of replenishment and development. I'm not saying just toss the prospects away, but I think we need to hold our horses on giving up our picks in 2022 and 2023 vs. subtracting from the prospect capital.

We lost vs Montreal, because of mistakes made be defensemen ended up as goals. ...scoring more is nice, but, giving away goals in key situations is soul crushing. ...and cost us every game we lost vs Montreal ...even game 5, where Sandin got overpowered lost the puck, and 3 seconds later a goal, and Holl couldnt clear the net a few times, or tie up his man for a goal, then Sandin loses the puck right at our net for another giveaway goal. Montreal would not have been in the lead that game if we had another competent defender to keep Sandin out of the lineup. ...and the defensive blunders just continued in game 6 and 7 ...this is why we really lost, its demoralizing trying to fight for every inch through solid defenders and then have your guys hand the puck over and leave the goalie screwed.

Nah.. offensive blackout... Game 1, 35 shots on goal, 0/4 on PP, we lose 2-1... we score at a normal rate, and the series is over in four.

Matthews, who was 18.5% shooting in the regular season, goes 2.9% in the playoffs.. He shoots at a normal rate, and we have 5-6 more goals... and the series is over in 4, 5 games...

When you lose a series when it goes the distance, you can easily attribute it to any specific area since the series was that close. Funny enough, we can do that the last 6 playoff series as the team has lost in the deciding game of 5 of them and the Washington series had 5 overtimes. All close.

So the Montreal series, ya that can be attributed to anything. Meaning both of what you bring up ring true. If Galchenyuk didn't Galchenyuk. If Dermott didn't have a brain fart. If Campbell had made a better save. If Matthews and Marner had 2 goals scored between them rather than 1, we would have been on to the next round.

If I were to pick a side, I would pick that Matthews and Marner stat. If you had told me at the start of the series those 2 would have only needed 2 goals between them to move on, and you included Tavares to that mix as well being injured, I would have been completely shocked.

The defence still frustrates with blown coverage, defensive miscues, poorly-timed pinches as well as getting hemmed in the zone. But I must say ever since Keefe took over, it feels like this happens far less, or at least the team does a better job recovering. Not saying the defence is amazing and they can't be improved, but I no longer feel they are the true weakness of the team, as that was the drum to bang on during Babcock's tenure.

The team could use a little bit of everything, but the core 4 dominating some series is first and foremost. Once they start doing so, it will be easier to worry about the little specific upgrades here and there.
