Scott Mayfield would be a great addition
Islanders are much more likely to trade Dobson than Mayfield at this point. Dobson has by far the lowest dzs% on that defense core the last two years and hasn't been great in a sheltered role.

Mayfield is an example of what most people here think Josh Manson is. His value would be through the roof.

I think forward wise, unless Kase works out on Matthews line, that we should look into acquiring a 2nd line centre. I feel our biggest weakness is LW, and by acquiring and 2C we would be able to shift Tavares to 1LW.

Tavares - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - ????? - Nylander
Bunting - Spezza - Kase
Ritchie/Mikhy - Kampf - Mikhy/Simmonds

I feel like acquiring a 2C would be a little easier then a 1st LW, hence why Tavares makes the shift and loads up the 1st line. I have found that Kerfoot and Nylander seem to be a pretty good combo too.

Of course you can also a acquire a LW like Rakell though instead.

Except Tavares is much more valuable to us as a 2C than as a 1LW, and I would argue that 2C spot is a lot more important than 1LW when you already have two other elite players on the line.

There is nothing wrong with our LW group. Bunting and Kerfoot are playing well in the top 6. Ritchie is getting it going. We will get Mikheyev back soon. Engvall has been fine too, but will likely be moved at some point. Maybe it is our "biggest weakness", but that is more because we are just that much better at center, defense, and RW. It doesn't mean we need to do anything to fix/add to it.

Besides, this team can't afford to make a noteworthy addition to that group without sacrificing in other (likely more important) areas or adding a very expensive rental we won't be able to keep, which is the last thing this team should be looking to do right now.

Kerfoot-Nylander-Kase would be a good 2nd line on most teams IMO. When Mikheyev is healthy Engvall-Kampf-Mikheyev should be good enough to to eat most D-zone starts.

What is the fascination of having JT-AM-MM on a line? Haven’t the past few playoffs showed us that the Leafs need to spread the offence instead of focusing on one line.

JT Miller is exactly the kind of guy I think would compliment the forward core the best. If Vancouver blows it all to hell is there a way to fit him in? He’s signed next year $5.2m.
I think he brings the right mix of guts and skill that could actually play in the top 6.
Holl ritchie 1st +?

It's not so much a need for that line as much as Nylander should be given the opportunity to run his own unit at C. We should know what we have there before needing to make another snap decision off a playoff injury. Play Tavares at 3C if you prefer, I think he's more useful as a power winger on the top line.

JT Miller is probably the best partner for AM. He is pretty much Hyman with scoring touch and a bit faster.

Won’t JT be killing it if he plays 3C on the Leafs?
The point is if you can create 3 good offensive lines, one of them is destined to be match up with easy opposing line.

Unless you're trading half the team or one of Nylander or Marner we can't afford him

It's going to be bloody tough making room for a Campbell extension as is

Holl + combination of prospects and picks for Miller @ 50% go all in, two playoff pushes with Miller-Matthews Marner-Tavares Nylander-Kerfoot Kampf-Kase. Tampa found a way to bring in Miller AND Mcdonaugh at 50% for two runs. Figure out, burn the boats.
Edit: as for keeping Campbell, you move mrazek and sign a $1m back up. The roster has $5.3 invested in goalies and you get jack in the mid 4’s and spend the rest on a backup. Rielly is already covered with Kessel and cap increase. Miller 50% is 2.6125 so Ritchie + 125k. Attach a pick to Ritchie if need be, Engvall & mik are off the cap, sell off dermott & bring in a 800k #6 and give Sandin and liljegren what’s leftover in a bridge. It’s tight and will cost assets, but if it really does come down to two more runs because of tbe Matthews and Nylander deals then you gotta go all in and Miller is the perfect guy.

So, you want to go into next season with a starter that has yet to play a starters workload and a backup like Hutchinson getting league min do you? Because that's what you're getting for that kind of money

No goaltending depth, no offensive depth, no defensive depth, traded away most of our assets

Sounds less like cup winner and more like lottery pick to me

Here’s a 20 man roster with raises to Kase, Sandin & liljegren. Campbell 6 years $25 and there’s 1.4m to upgrade the two soft spots (Robertson & backup goalie) you could carry a league min 7th D and upgrade one or both spots to 1-1.2m guys.

Campbell is getting 4M and were using a Marlies goaltender with no experience as backup?

Kase and Robertson are walking injuries and if Kase plays well he's not getting 2M either

Admittedly, JT Miller at 50% would be one heck of an add for this squad, and provide some dimensions that we lack up front.

We can't afford the assets, we morgaged the future last season and assets aren't unlimited

“Mortgage the future” we traded a 1st and a bunch of mid late picks. If you’re in for a penny you’re in for a pound.
At some point guys like Amirov SDA Robertson have to play. If Kase gets less then great, that goes toward my argument by providing more cap than the 1.4 I already have.
I appreciate you casually avoiding the point there’s still 1.4m to upgrade those two spots vs just bitching about them being weak spots. No roster is perfect. Add 250k-500k and get a better back up. Colorado has Kuemper and league minimum backup this year.

I can respect that we might not want to pay the price, and continue to mortgage the future... but it isn't a "can't". We most certainly can, (and we will!!) Sorry, had to add that in.
Miller 50% + Schenn
For
Holl + Engvall + Robertson/Amirov/Knies + 22 1st + 23 2nd that can become a 1st based on playoff performance/re-signing.
I know it’s steep, but it sets up the team so well this season and next.

We traded most if not all of last seasons picks and a bunch of this seasons picks, we have picked once in the first round over about a four year period

We don't know if any of those prospects are good enough yet

Oh Jesus, I'm a big meanie who points out our goaltending and depth looks like a ******* disaster put together with band aids and superglue

Colorado you say? They haven't exactly started like a house on fire, goaltending hasn't exactly stood on its head and scoring depth a bit of a problem all of a sudden?

I will give my own quote since you like them

"We have and failed, pretty spectacularly"

Instead of doubling down on failure let's try something different, like using resources on areas of need like depth scoring and goaltending which would be significantly cheaper
