Did you personally think Liljegren would make it full time though?

Thats the only reason Holl and Dermott are being shopped now. Hindsight is 20/20 but without that knowledge it's hard to make a trade with the expectation one of your prospects makes it full-time.
Even if you knew they would be ready you’re better off sacrificing McCann over Holl and waiting it out to see the results first hand. D carry a premium value around the league. Especially RHD.

Seattle was seemingly interested in Holl at the expansion draft.

I wonder is something can be worked out with Holl going to Seattle with one of Borgen or Lauzon coming back. Would solve a lot of cap issues for us while giving us a serviceable young-ish defender to plug in.

If the Leafs trade Dermott/Holl, they can make take Mikheyev off LTIR and start accruing cap space today for the trade deadline.

Lauzon can play both sides I believe.

Chris Johnston on the Chris Johnston Show:

- Leafs feel Liljegren and Sandin are both NHL regulars and top 6 d-men.

- Leafs currently looking to “sell” one of their d-men

- Dermott and Holl the two names that would be available

- Leafs looking to create a bit ore flexibility, cap wise, to allow more up and down

- Things have been “loud” the last 24 to 36 hours regarding the Leafs trade talk (episode taped on Thursday)

- In fact, CJ said there was a “false alarm” on Thursday, as his phone started blowing up and it seemed like something may have been imminent

- CJ says something may come together fairly soon, As there are teams looking for d-men.

- CJ describes this as another, trying to do right, by the players, as they have 7 guys who should play every day and only 6 spots.

Lauzon would be my preference of the two but it looks like he's played in every game for Seattle so far. Borgen has been a scratch.

Buffalo fans were pretty high on Borgen last year. He's 24 and an RFA at the end of the year. $900k cap hit.

Holl for Borgen and a 4th would really help us out on the cap. Mikheyev can come of LTIR without having to put anyone on waivers or send anyone to the Marlies.

At that point they can work on moving Engvall/Ritchie and maybe sign Ho-Sang. Semyonov looks like he deserves a shot as well.

Kinda seems like we might have a Justin Holl for close to league minimum 7th D-man and a pick/prospect come soon.

Edit: forgot about Mennell. So maybe just for a pick or prospect

Engvall should stay.

Ritchie we can start looking to move I think. I’m not as down on Ritchie as others, because I’ve quite liked how the Ritchie-Spezza-Simmonds like has looked and played, but I imagine the Ritchie deal was designed for him playing higher in the lineup, and Kerfoot/Bunting have seemingly locked down those spots now.

Moving Ritchie and Holl would create strong flexibility, and can be replaced internally with Liljegren (who has already replaced Holl) and one of Semyonov or Anderson or other until Mikheyev gets back.

Fair enough. I think Ritchie is the most useless player we've had in a long time but trading him will be hard for sure.
The good thing about guys like Ritchie is that there’s always a GM who sees the raw tools and size and figure they can be the situation that it all comes together for the player. someone will take him if we need the cap/roster space

Ritchie definitely had his best game last game against Tampa. He was finally noticeable.

I like Engvall but for roster flexibility, I would gladly take a mid round draft pick for him. In no way would I put him on waivers though.

Forgot about Mennell.

Yeah, that works for me

I'm just thinking it's an easy recall and just try to get the best pick possible...currently only have our 1st and 2nd...our 7th is conditionally traded.

In the scenario of moving Holl for a pick, and then moving Ritchie for a pick, we could move Mikheyev to IR, and call up Semyonov, Anderson and Menell, to run a 22 man roster, (23 once Mikheyev is healthy) and still have 1.4Mish in cap space that will accrue heading into the deadline.

Would also put some picks in the cupboard, in the event we look at possibly bringing in a rental, to take another shot.

Willing to give Ritchie a bit more time. We’ve had very few liberties taken with our team and the 4th line is a positive so far.

Might be the guy we want around for playoffs and ugly goals need to come.

Those types of players are always moveable. The value back will vary a lot of course but if you're willing to let a player go for next to nothing, unless that player has a long term contract, it's typically not super hard in the right setting.

If Mrazek is out long term I wonder if Dallas would move Jake Oettinger.

He played well for them last year and is playing great in the AHL but they have Knudobin/Holtby/Bishop as well.

If they signed Holtby to take his spot they probably weren't that high on him to begin with so the cost should ve fairly low.

Either that or flip Hutch and a lower level prospect for Stolarz.

Oettinger is the only goalie in Dallas I am positive is not available.

Hindsight is 20/20 but letting Holl go to Seattle and keeping McCann + re-signing Hutton at $750k while not signign Ritchie at all would have been a very simple way of improving the team.

Holl played good last year and it made a lot of people believe it was sustainable.
My thought about this was, if they really wanted to protect Holl (a decision I was fine with and actually preferred), then don't spend the asset on McCann and just let them take Kerfoot. Seems to me at some point Kerfoot will have to go anyway as a cap casualty, just let Seattle do it for them at the time.
