Are they giving us a pick to do that? Otherwise, if they want Kerfoot, just take him straight up and pay the bonus.

the payment is not losing another player. It all depends on how much they value dermott.....

what is he worth? A 2nd and a 3rd?

if I’m Toronto if I can get cap space and keep an asset that I like better. I’m paying the money.

but we will see.

Assumptions
Dermott to Seattle
Kerfoot to Arizona once his bonus is paid

Hyman 4m
Galchenyuk 1.5m

xxx-Matthews-Marner
Galch-Tavares-Nylander
Robertson-Engvall-Hyman
Soup-Brooks-Anderson

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Liljegren
Sandin-Holl

Campbell
2 spares - 800k per

leaves 6.4m for tandem goalie, 1LW, potentially upgrading Envall

There's money there to bring Foligno back if he's interested

Why do we need two spare goalies? We already have Hutch under contract, plus Woll, Scott, and maybe Vehvilainen behind him. We need a guy to pair with Campbell but otherwise we probably need to trade one of our prospect goalies.

Okulov: 1 x 925k
Simmonds: 1 x 1 mill
Bogosian: 1 x 1 mill
Goodrow: 4 x 2.5 mill.
Nash: 1 x 900k

Noesen: 1 x 750k (AHLer)
Poolman: 2 x 800k (AHLer)

The remaining 1.5 mill can be used to pay some of these guys slightly more.

Why do we need two spare goalies?
Roster spares, 7D and 13F. Backup to be paid out of the 6.4 left along with 1LW.

So using Driedger at 2.75, that leaves 3.65 for some combination of 1LW (maybe enough for Foligno) or 1LW plus an upgrade elsewhere (I'd look at Engvall)

Ok it just threw me off because you had it listed right below Campbell where you would put the tandem goalie (and you didn't have a placeholder for one), so I thought you were referring to spare goalies.

Traded Kerfoot to CBJ for a 2nd in 2022.

Dermy is an expansion draft casualty.

Re-signed:
Foligno for 2.5 mil x 3 years (could be slightly more)
Riley Nash 1.5 mil x 2
Galch 1.25 mil x 2
Spezza 800k x 1
Simmonds 1 mil x 1

I think Engvall's done a decent job for us. 63% Dzone starts, with decent possession metrics for that overweight. We give up less goals when he's on the ice, than we score. He's pretty low event hockey though, and isn't providing offense at a very good level. He moves around the ice quite well, isn't caught out of position, but with that size, you'd expect more physicality.

I would continue to work with Engvall, and evolve his game. Brooks is another small guy, a problem on the Leafs. Get Engvall to work on his offensive side, and more physicality, and we've got a pretty good sub 12 minute a game guy.
I see how Engvall is frustrating for fans to watch because of what fans think he is capable of being or would like him to be, but this ^ is pretty accurate & overlooked.

I wouldn't just throw him away because you're frustrated with his development or him not playing to his potential. Guys 6'5" who skate as fast as he does do not grow on trees (there is nobody 6'5"+ as fast as him); that combination of speed & reach has some serious upside/potential for penalty killing & a defensive role. He's big & he may not ever run guys over but he could still evolve into an effective bottom 6 player for the Leafs.

Keep in mind Foligno's family is still in Columbus .. For all intents and purposes he wants to re-sign there, and the organization wants to bring him back.

Maybe, MAYBE, the Leafs could convince him to stay for 1 season.. 1 more run for a cup, and then he can go retire in Columbus. He'll be 34 later this year, so I doubt he's looking to get a long term deal. May be persuaded into 1 year if he wants to contend. Columbus sure seems far off from doing that.

Yep, and Columbus will have more cap space than God this off-season, so they can afford to overpay Foligno.

To be fair, in a normal world, his family probably comes with.

He said he didn’t bring them due to the COVID situation in Ontario.

I tend to agree he goes back to Columbus though, but, if there’s a team he’d consider staying with, it’s probably us.

I think keeping his family in Columbus had more to do with the Covid situation here than anything else.

He may very well re-sign there but he would have gladly brought them with him if he felt it was safe.

COVID or not, his contract expires in a few months. It is like project manager for a company and being assign to a site for a few months. Nobody will bring their family along in this situation.
He might resign or sign in Columbus or in another city.

I dont read much into that, moving the family/pulling the kids out of school to go into a locked down learn from home environment would be a crazy thing to do without a guaranteed longer tenure.

Edit:beaten to it

While I won't blink if he resigns in Columbus, I will say way too many folks in general have been trying to read too much into what his family has been doing in the 72 hours after the trade.

If the Leafs playoff run is the most fun he's ever had in his career (let's face it, not that hard to achieve) anything can happen....

What’s interesting about the Nedeljkovic outbreak is that it opens the possibility that Carolina could allow Mrazek to walk, and give the starts job to Neddy next year.

Mrazek would be a real nice target for us, but I always figured he’d be resigned, but with Neddy’s outbreak, and Hamilton’s pending free agency, they may opt to save the money they’d need to keep Mrazek and give it to Hamilton.

His family is from Sudbury and he also said Toronto is where he feels most at home. Not to say anything concrete, but he definitely has ties here as well.

‘Outbreak’ is not the best word to use in our current environment.

I wonder if the reason they are prioritizing Sandin over Liljegren at this point is because they may be considering moving Rielly, and they want to see what they have in Sandin as soon as possible in terms of a puck moving defenseman (and potentially as someone on the powerplay).

Plus the school year ends in another month. Why disrupt the kids’ lives given COVID and school is almost over.

I expect Foligno and his family will live in Columbus when his career is over. But I think next year he could go a few places. Toronto is very much in the mix. The Wild so he can play with his brother is another option. And, of course, Columbus. But I think Columbus might want to tank next year, so that could lead to a scenario where he signs a one year contract with Toronto, and then comes back for one last season with the Jackets in 22-23 when the CBJ KHL prospects start to come over and a couple high first round picks might be on the team. Then he can move into a front office job.

Mrazek would be a fantastic target. I wonder what his asking price would be

Calling my shot: Rielly is the first captain of the Seattle Kraken

It's possible.

Should the PP continue to scuffle and Sandin gets moved to the first unit, changing its success, that might be a big factor.

Move Rielly pre-expansion draft for picks/prospects/players who are ED exempt, and then after the ED evaluate if those assets can be used to bring in another player.

My thought is more that they realize losing Dermott this off-season, either via trade pre-expansion, or in the expansion draft, is a real possibility.

To throw a wild theory out there, maybe they consider exposing Muzzin. It would suuuuuuuuuuuuuuck to lose Muzzin, but we might rather expose him and his 5.625M for his age 33, 34, and 35 seasons. As much as we all love Muzzin, he's essentially a ticking time bomb at this point. We don't know if that's next season, middle of next season, two years from now, three years from now, or maybe he'll be effective into his late 30's. Not to say we WANT Muzzin to be taken, however, if we are losing a quality d-man, might as well be the oldest, and currently most risky contract?

TL;DR: Simply getting a look at Sandin, because he likely replaces Dermott full-time next season. If we want to go with wild theory, we might expose Muzzin, and are seeing if Sandin excels.
