I mean, he specifically sought out Campbell, so it seems a bit stupid to call it 'luck'. Campbell had pedigree and had a really good 2019 season with LA, there was definitely thought given to that transaction. Plus there was the Soo connection, it's not like Campbell was a random throw-in.
Considering contracts and positional value Clifford was the throw in.

What was their rumored ask?
According to the article:

"Verbeek would also likely seek a return that includes a first-round pick and either a promising young NHL player or a high-quality prospect."

But later on they say this:

"Silber doubted the Capitals would be interested unless the Ducks retain some of Gibson's cap hit. Cap-strapped teams like the Leafs and Oilers would expect the same. "

Kinda closer to what a lot of us were saying. Without retention they aren't getting much.

I'm disappointed in myself for giving this a click. The proposal was play Sandin at #2RD with Muzzin.

What could the Leafs blueline look like next year? Exactly like it did this year, minus Holl!

Though to be fair, I think it's VERY likely that Rielly, Brodie, Liljegren, Giordano, and Sandin are all back. Muzzin is really the only one where there's a solid argument for trying to move him (if you could). Otherwise, I suppose there's an outside shot one of Liljegren or Sandin get moved in a big trade, but no reason to expect that to happen.

This is simply insane to pay this for Gibson, you are paying for what he will do in the future not what he has done in the past, (3 years ago). If this was actually the deal Toronto did, it would be the most 1 sided trade in the history of the NHL

If leafs just offer a 1st round, ducks will keep Gibson and it will be the end of the story... ducks DONT NEED to trade Gibson, they will not make a gift and give away their best player for a ridiculous price...

And leafs will try to fill hole with a similar kind of tandem of Smith/ koskinen and hope its gonna work.. lets go sign an Mrazek 2.0, cross your finder and hope its gonna work this time

Why isn't his wife able to leave Minny?

Ok cool pal. Have a good one!
Child custody issues with her previous husband. Needs court permission to travel with kids. She can't just up and leave court without court approval or risk being arrested.

Wouldn't offer the 1st, Ducks can keep Gibson, now let's all enjoy the end of the story.

I love Campbell as a player and as a person. It's pretty hard to justify a 5 year term or a high AVV or both when there are:
-Injury issues and very questionable if he can play 50 games per year
-Long stretches of high highs and low lows
-Extremely hard on himself (I don't know how you measure this but it's a tough quality for a goalie)

The positives are:
-Performs very well in the playoffs
-Pretty good at handling the puck
-Still relatively young compared to the UFA crop

Not sure about locking into the questionable choice because the alternative is worse is a great strategy. I'd like him back, but when we're competing against the entire NHL to sign him it's not looking good for us.

A guy who I have thought for a long time would be a game changer with the Leafs is Boone Jenner. The guy is a warrior, especially in the playoffs. He brings so much the Leafs are lacking, and for only 3.75 mil for the next 4 years. C/ LW who has a C on his chest and would solidify down the middle and either the second or third LW spot. Columbus is a long way from being relevant and maybe he's ready to move for a shot at a championship.

What would it take from the Leafs end? Columbus has a lot of nice pieces and #6 and #12 this year.

I think they re-upped him, overpaid him and made him captain for a reason, they don't want to move him and he's gonna help mentor the next wave.

and leafs will finally resign Campbell around 5M

Or take Mrazek type of risk with Marray, blackwood, desmith and cross your finger thats working

And the end of story will be leafs lost a 7th year in a row against tampa of florida because they lost for a 7th time goalie battle... Making the same mistake and hope a different story.

They could also make the trade, lose 1st round and not have futures to improve the team.

Improving the team is not when Matthews will be out...

Do you thing pittsburgh or tampa or chicago or LAK who giving up a lot of high pick and prospect have any regrets?

Whats happen if robertson become a kind of alexander Nylander and knies a kind of Benoit Pouliot... oh well we kept our futur!!!! Nobody know if knies or robertson or niemela or whatever will be good NHL player. Still a gamble...

Those players/teams still have won actual playoff rounds, not gambling the house on a goalie with mediocre stats and a shite contract. You're the only one who thinks it makes sense.

Unless it's Sorkin, Shesterkin or Vas...no other goalie commands a 1st and top prospects etc.

I wonder how much retention they are willing to do as it could become a relatively attractive contract if they retain a lot.

Just watch colorado/ tampa... both had traded 2 1st or a 1st and a top prospect for a 3rd line player

If they are ready to pay that price for a 3rd line player, yes i pretty sure they would be ready for a #1 goalie with term... colorado already giving up a 1st and a decent prospect for a rental goalie...

If you are attaching Mrazek, it commands at least a first and maybe a prospect.

Those teams went all-in. The last thing we need is another bad contract like Ritchie's and Mrazek's and Gibson's is worse if he sucks.

I’d pay a nice price for Sorokin. Wouldn’t really hesitate with starting with a 1st and either Sandin or Robertson. Our goaltending issues would be solved that’s for sure.

But he didn't suck, just playing in an awful team...

There a reason why ducks fan consider Gibson as best player of the team deapite bad stats he had... in front of guy like Zegras...there are a reason why nhl player voted gibson amount 5 goalie they will take to win a #7 game. Why everybody with a minimum of credibility consider him as an elite goalie

They know than without Gibson last 3 season, they probably finishing last...

Gibson is probably not as good as you say or as bad as others say but given our cap situation, it would be risky to take on 6.4mx4 unless they take back Mrazek and a first or Robertson and a small add.

I'd kick tires on Husso or Blackwood (2.8m) before going after Gibson.
