Schiefele has 2 years @ 6.125 left. A locker room cancer in the media and the scapegoat of the fan base, hated for not having any heart.

...Doesn't that sound like every player we've moved on from who became stars elsewhere? From Kadri, to Kessel, and I can go on and on here. I think the Leafs should be bold and try to add another #1C. If they fail this year, they can retool the roster moving all of these players with low money and term for big prospects and picks.

So my proposal

To LA Kings;
Jake Muzzin

To Leafs:
19th OA 2022

A fraction of what they sold him for, but still good value. LA needs a vet LD badly and know Muzzin well. He is well liked by vets of the team, no fear of ruining good environment for their kids to develop in. Leafs clear 5.625 in cap here.

Then the offer for Schief

25th OA 2022
Nick Robertson
Rights to Kase

for

Schief

A massive package here, but they bring in a legit first line player. This lets the Leafs have maximum flexibility with their lines, having 3 deep lines or putting Tavares to the wing. Something like

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - Scheif - Nylander

This still leaves the Leafs with around ~10M in cap space. Next order of business is to either take a falling player we really like with LA's pick, or move back to late 20's and get a 2nd and 3rd round pick for it.

From here the Leafs would need to add

- A vet bottom pairing dmen
- A starting goalie
- A top 9 forward if possible
- Confidence their prospects can retool their 4th line internally.

I think we can spend 4-6 million on a goalie and still ice a full roster. You can get a vet dman for ~1M, similar to Bush and Bogo. That would leave 2-3 million to re-sign Engvall, Sandin, and Lilly plus add a top 9 forward.

So the next step is to move Mrazek. I personally think the move here is to go with a 60 game goalie who is your guy, and let one of the prospect goalies win the backup job. If they fail at camp, there are always goalies on waivers end of pre-season they can get as insurance. This let's them have the same cap structure in goal that they were going for anyways, ~7M as they had with Freddy and Campbell.

Mrazek
prospect

Hawks
future considerations

Also we will move Holl for the rights of Pulj and sign him

Now the roster looks like this

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - Schief - Nylander
Engvall (2M) - Kampf - Pulj (2 AAV)
Prospects

Rielly - Brodie
Gio (800k) - Lilly (1.5 AAV)
Sandin (1.1 AAV) - Vet (1m AAV)
Prospect

Starter (6M)
Kallgren / Woll / other (800k)
Not only that, but how awesome would games vs the Jets be if we had Shief! Could the jets hate us more than they do now?!

Do you think we could move Kerfoot and/or Holl for Yakov Trenin? Plus/minus assets.

Pretty physical, hasn't had the best zone starts either, so CF % isn't bad.

Popped 20 goals, more of a shooter than a passer which frankly, I don't mind in our bottom 6 given the minescule contributions in the playoffs last few years.

Nashville is a weird team to trade with. They are super mediocre and they don't seem like they are committed to rebuilding or going for it, just content to keeping it on the level. They have a ton of cap space and very little to re-signing in terms of RFAs this off-season.

Trenin is starting to trend upwards and a 17 goal season while shooting 13% isn't completely out of line. I do think they would have interest in Holl but I don't see them trading Trenin anytime soon. They need more skill/scorers.

I also think they are a team that could look into Mrazek. They will look for a back-up and Mrazek could be an ok stop-gap.

Sharing this for a couple of reasons.

1. perhaps some interesting names that can be brought in a cheap one year deal, if they do get bought out.

2. When the Matt Murray link to us came out, many people first thought of a trade, which makes no sense. But taking a chance on Matt Murray for 750K to 1M that can be buried, seems far more likely of a possible “link” than any sort of trade

3. interestingly enough, Petr Mrazek isn’t on this list, nor in the honourable candidates portion. Seems odd.

Is there a chart showing where those assists come from?

marner to Rocket?
marner to best goal scorer in the league?

Just curious where HF stands on Mrzaek?

-Trade an asset (picks/prospect) to dump him somewhere
-Keep him and play him as a tandem again next season
-Try something creative? I.e. Trade our 1st round back 10 spots to dump him somewhere. Or trade him with an asset to add a player like we did in the Ritchie trade?
-Buyout

If sandin is disgruntled. A sandin for dach trade could work.

We need a C. We don’t have great C prospects. A 2nd line c is our biggest need.

On D we don’t have a sure fire stud. But Lilly. Niemela ans villenueve could fill spots.

A 25 and under core of

Knies. Matty. Marner
Robertson. dach. Nylander
Amirov. Steeves.
Anderson. Douglas.

Lilly/niemela/villenueve etc would make sense.

We still need a top pair d. But it could make sense

Mrazek. Sandin. Picks for dach and stuff (no idea what that would be)

If Chicago were willing to do Dach for Sandin, I'd do that pretty instantly. I very much like Sandin but Dach is a really good buy-low candidate right now in the sense that he hasn't shown as much as people thought he would to this point.

He's a big boy. Great pedigree. A lot of untapped potential there.

Anyone know much about his skating? Is it good? Average?

It might not look as strong as last year, but it's putting the focus on the management and scouting of the team.

If they cannot get a couple players out of their system, and we aren't talking about 18-20 year olds here, then they have some house cleaning to do.

There are some risks, but none that saddle us with expensive contracts and most of them are trusting guys who are young, higher end prospects, so there is some massive upside too.

Robertson and Tierney are replacing guys who were effectively useless for much of the year. If they end up being useless themselves, then we are in the same spot and we have a few other guys we can easily try. However, both are capable of providing much more two-way value (especially offense) than Simmonds/Spezza were able to provide, so there could be massive gains there. Paul Stastny may also be an option instead of Tierney, since he said he is looking for an opportunity to win a Cup and not money. He is still a guy who can bring some solid 3C ability.

It will be tough replacing Kerfoot and Mikheyev's defensive/PK contributions and especially Mikheyev's speed, but I think it is important to remember that Kerfoot was not a PKer until we made him a PKer, and we have a ton of PK candidates (Marner, Kampf, Engvall, Kase, Anderson, Robertson, Lazar, Tierney/Stastny).

I think Anderson could be a better offensive fit for the 2nd line than Kerfoot (and worst case, Knies is a prime candidate to try on that line by the end of the year), and I feel like there are a few guys in UFA who can effectively round off that shutdown line (I picked Lazar because he is a RH C option). Both provide more energy and "grit" than the guys they replaced too.

Dronov is a bit of a wildcard, but I feel like he is a perfect mix of Holl and Lyubushkin, and we would have some solid insurance in case he flops or something. He should also be a nice blend of letting Liljegren get plenty of opportunities in the top 4 RD while still being a guy who can play key defensive minutes.

Iafallo could be a good target in a 1 for 1 deal for Muzzin. Iafallo is #3 in TOI/GP on LA but they are openly looking for a RS scorer to put on the top line (Forsberg). Moore is their 2LW and that line probably won't be broken up. He has 3 years left at 4M. Leafs take on an extra year of term, LA take on 1.625M in extra cap space for 2 years.

My preference is someone younger and a couple of years from the NHL.

There's really no space on this team for a struggling 22 year old.

I'd trade Sandin for a pick in the 15-20 range or someone like Brock Faber.

All are viable options but IMO Leafs prefer 1 or 3. Dubas will get roasted if he goes with 2 and he can't stay healthy or can't play to the level they paid to play at.

Kassian would be a great 4th line fit for 1mill

I've seen that, I'd like to know who scored the goals on those assists.

Example:

marner assisted on:

12 Nylander goals
4 Kerfoot goals
45 Matthews goals
8 ...

Would take too much time to have it, the only we can see..

Complete Season he was playing with tavares he was at 2.08

2 complete season with matthews he was at 2.07...

So he didn't get more assist because hes playing with matthews over Jt

1 or 3, neither of which will be as costly as the doomsayers around here will tell you. Conversely he could be a neutral value cap filler in a trade for a goalie.

Kuzmenko meeting with Oilers and Canucks this week and according to TSN with 2 clubs in the US also in the running. I think he could be costly. I wonder if this means Oilers are moving on from Kane.

Why not keep him? I think there are still scenarios where he is kept, short of there being concerns about his health or the new goalie coach not being able to work for him.

If Gibson is indeed wanting out u gotta go for ghm. He can at least give u 50-60 games and he will be motivated to play. I'd be ok with Matt Murray as a back up/ reclamation project at 850k- 1mil . Khallgren as a 3rd.

Gonna prob cost a 1st plus something else if we can dump mrazek on them. Maybe a 1st + holl + mrazek and a sweater like dalhstrom. Makes the cap almsot a wash.

If I am putting a top prospect or pick on the table, I want them taking Mrazek and them retaining more than a mill on that contract. Get that contract in the low-mid 5's.
