Have to hope that Giordano can get a soft deal to the Leafs the same way Giroux has orchestrated a soft deal to Florida (and Hall to the Bruins last year).

We'll see how it plays out.

Probably for Lundell +

Doubt it. Tippett is already confirmed. I don't know if they want to include their 2024 1st since there are already so many conditions attached to their other top picks, so it may end up being Samoskevich and the 2023 2nd. Maybe even Denisenko in there... It is not like any of these guys are prospects who are lighting the roof on fire like their draft positions suggest.

Florida is also getting Bunnaman. Usually I would say whatever because he is barely even a good AHLer and was on waivers earlier this year, but he is exactly the kind of guy Florida turns into a useful NHLer.

IMO we can’t compete with the likes of FLA, TB, Boston, or CAR. Middleton and McBain may be interesting low buy options but no guarantee they even make an impact here. Best to just ride what we have and see how we do. Add Knies to the 2LW and Steeves to 4C and hope that makes a moderate impact.

We can compete with them. We just can't enter an asset firing match with them.

We are going to have to count on our top guys being better than theirs, and our goalie being better than theirs. Might be a tough task against a Tampa, but the others?

It is not like this team needs external upgrades. We need our guys to just live up to expectations for once, and adding someone externally is not going to make a difference anyways if that does not happen (and there are not many, if any, external upgrades we can make which will make that more likely to happen).

I like your optimisim

But that doesnt you take a chance and dont improve your team

3 teams improved significantly. Not just an add ons

We were short stacked against them in goaltending and defense to begin with

I'm not necessarily optimistic, I just don't think the road to the Stanley Cup is necessarily by overpaying and winning on trade deadline day. If we have a window of contention, I don't want to blow my brains out in 2022 when we have a legitimate shot in 2023 and 2024 (and beyond).

Why would any of Boston's competitors not claim him then? Nobody is going to let them get better for free if it costs them nothing to stop it.
Why'd no one do that with Spezza by the same argument (though, I admit Spezza and Krejci are very different players)
It would be a sure way to torpedo a relationship with a fellow GM and agent

No reason to make a big trade now, Florida is loaded up and were already better before their moves.

The best move right now would be to let Boston pass us and take our chances against the Canes and if we win face the Rangers or Pens and if we somehow win that, hope that Tampa/Florida/Boston kill eachother and are completely worn out by round 3

You’re right. It’s not the end of the world. But we very clearly need to improve as well. Florida becomes even more of nightmare matchup with Giroux bolstering their forward group.

I think our improvement comes from consistently playing like a top 5 team effort-wise and making smaller depth additions, while finding some stability in goal. Don't think a big splash really helps us out if the core pieces aren't doing what they're supposed to. I could see a bigger defensive retool in the summer to get stronger for 2023, but that's another story.

The Ritchie trade to get boosh looks really nice right now

I don’t see how we can compare these trades. Lyubushkin had basically zero interest around the league and is a no name player. Giroux and Lindholm are/were top pairing/line players. Ritchie I guess for a 3rd or potential second isn’t that great.

If we can get great goaltending consistently in the post season I still like our chances against anyone. Also any trade deadline acquisitions now 100% have to be for this year as well as next. Varlamov + Mayfield makes us incredibly strong.
