Would you trade Mrazek for Koskinen (pending UFA, retained to equal salary) 1 for 1?

There's a couple of things we can do to free up some more cap space. Trade one of Mikheyev/Engvall. Both are the same type of player and are just too inconsistent to sign to long term. If you bring in a top 6 winger, then trade Kerfoot. Sit/demote Simmonds. He hasn't provided anything to this team and I would much rather get a look at players like Alex Steeves or Joey Anderson.

I think I keep Engvall over Mikheyev for cost certainty. But it’ll all come down to whether we are dealing them to a contender or rebuilding team.

But ya, these are what we should expect the lines to look like post deadline:
Bunting - Matthews - Marner
XXXX - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall/Mik - Kampf - Kase
XXXX - XXXX - Spezza

Reilly - Brodie
XXXX - XXXX
Sandin - Bush/Holl

Campbell
XXXX

Any of the XXXXs can be the players currently in those positions, or players currently on the team pushed down the lineup, but this may be the most exciting TDL for the Leafs as far as I could remember as they could realistically target impact players in each of those positions.

I agree. I would much rather keep Engvall over Mikheyev as well. I think it's time the Leafs see what some of these kinds can do and stop solely relying on what's currently on the roster.

Smith played 32g last yr with .923 save % and a 2.31 gaa so he must be playing injured or suffering from the after affects of covid or maybe he's a new father .

Or he’s regressing to his career norms since those stats are well above what he had done in the previous 10 years.

Plus he’s 39.

probably since he's not a Leaf and our players never declining due to age must have thrown off me off a bit

Yeah, no way we sign Kadri. Going to be a strong free agent crop though. Gaudreau, Forsberg, Kadri are all having career years. Malkin, Bergeron, Giroux, Letang, Hertl, Palat, Lindholm, Klingberg etc. Are expiring too, but I imagine several will re-sign. Tkachuk, Laine, Boeser deals are up and a year away from free agency as well.

Unfortunately our cap structure precludes us from playing in the top end of the UFA market. Might be some diamonds there a la Brodie, Kase, Bunting, etc. It's definitely hit and miss though. Thornton, Boyd, Vesey, Lehtonen, that Russian centre, they were all busts.

What are the chances the Leafs sign Kadri this off season?
None. He is going to be commanding north of 7M on the open market. The Leafs won't have that kind of cap space to pay for another forward. He isn't a need either. Leafs need to focus on the back end and possibly look at options in goal.

We shouldn't be going after someone who has some screws loose and costs you the playoffs every year.

There are SO MANY moving parts between now and free agency.

Leafs will have no problems re-signing the RFAs and Campbell. 50/50 on Mikheyev but unlikely. They don't have dead weight contracts but can easily shuffle things around again to open up cap space if they want to sign a higher profile player.

Leafs can open up 10Mish of cap space by trading Holl, Kerfoot and Mrazek (not in the same trade) for just futures.

At this point you would think the Leafs brass has to be focusing on a top 4 d. Lindholm and Chychurn are the big fish. Chychurn is young and cost controlled but Lindholm is probably top 3 in shutdown ability league wide. If we could speak to Lindholms agent for an extension I think the leafs should be all over him.

What about a strategy involving trading lower draft picks (third round or lower) for Giordano and Braun, and then trading the bigger assets for JT Miller? I’m not convinced Muzzin is coming back.

Rielly Brodie
Gio Braun
Sandin Lyubushkin

Gio would be my rental target if the price is reasonable. I much prefer him over Braun.

This is Ron Francis we're talking about, I don't think the price will be reasonable. I expect he'll demand a 1st+, not get it, and Gio will walk as a FA.

I'm a fan. Gio slots 2LD and Braun may slot 3RD. Problem is that's where Lybby is. We don't have to play Lybby, but we ought to. We could try Gio-Braun on the 2nd pairing then do Sandin-Lybby on the 3rd.

He also handled the expansion draft process poorly by declining the likes of Tarasenko and not taking advantage of desperate teams and accumulating future assets. I wouldn’t think too highly of his gm ability tbh

yeah, sometimes the best move is the one you avoid making, as frustrating as it is. This is why I have a hard time criticizing GMs for their lack of movement. If everyone wants to take them out to the shed I wouldn't blame them for standing pat.

I forget where on twitter but I saw someone say a 2nd for Gio would probably do it.

If there is any rental I'd go for it's him.

I just went back over all his picks yesterday and believe it or not, taking Dunn instead of Tarasenko was one of his better moves LOL. I forgot how many AHL'ers he took that I've never heard of over NHL players. Just a brutal job. My personal favourite was instead of getting paid a draft pick not to take Vanecek and drafting Kempny, Dillon or Schultz, he took Vanecek and traded him back to Washington for a 2nd. Just a buffoon of a GM.
