Man you guys have overcorrected insanely hard on Chiarot and I love it

The guy was a serviceable NHL defenseman as recently as last year. He just takes WAY too many penalties. On a better team, better system he can be a fine #6 defenseman as long as he stops being an idiot with the penalties.

A top-90 pick is a joke though, but its not like he's completely useless when he has a decent partner.

I know guys soured on Weber the last few years but he was a hell of a defenseman...definitely made it easy to play the game.

The Leafs already have Rielly/Muzzin/Sandin/Dermott on the left, and Chiarot is worse than all of them. It would just be impossible to justify Montreal's asking price for a player of Chiarot's caliber who also isn't even remotely filling a hole on the team

I don't mind the Chiarot acquisition if the Leafs can re-sign him and if they can dump Ritchie's salary in the process.

He's exactly the type of defenceman the Leafs need, besides the fact that he shoots left.

Chiarot is not worth anything more than a 3rd round pick. Montreal wants a lot more, so it should be an easy decision for Dubas to move on...at least I hope that's the case.

I’ll say this about Chariot…

Is he my first choice?

HELLLLLL NO.

But…

Maybe just maybe this team has some better advanced stats on him, similar to Kampf, who was eaten alive in the available metrics.

still not my first choice at all.

At least Kampf played a position of need, and the Leafs didn't have to give up any assets for him. This would just be adding a shitty player who offers nothing but toughness for an obscene price, and those sorts of deals never go well

Someone on the main boards is suggesting a 2nd and Topi for Ben Chiarot. Give me a f***ing break.

Either go all in and get a guy with term and way more talent and pay the price or enough with this crap.

Chiarot would be an alright add but some of the prices are ridiculous. Hopefully they pass on anything crazy like that.

It just makes no sense. The rumoured price makes no sense. His numbers/metics are awful and he plays a position we're stacked on.

If the price was in line with what it should be based on value and precedence, then sure fine whatever. But he's rumoured to be THE Foligno of this deadline. And he's not even clearly better than any of our top 6.

Dubas has not learned from that dumb Foligno trade if they are actually invested in acquiring him.

Chariot or not, an upgrade on Holl on that 2nd pairing is our most glaring need.
Muzzin-Liljegren
Sandin-Holl
Have been effective pairings when partnered together. Let them play as much as possible leading into the deadline and reassess needs then. Honestly, considering acquisition cost upgrading the forward group might make more sense with an impactful player vs the D that are going to be out there.

This scares me. NRD is very legit and usually way ahead of insiders, so if he's claiming the Leafs are after Chiarot, well then you can take it to the bank.

I'd say Holl compares just fine with most contenders' #4D.

And Holl is probably not even our #4 D with how well the two kids have played.

I don't want Chiarot and don't understand the appeal. That said, if the Leafs do acquire him the sensible assumption is that they have intel that we do not, and not that they are idiots. I am an advocate of public analytics, but they are not gospel.

Same Intel that brought us Nash and Foligno? Seems the leafs get attached to players that take us out of the playoffs.

I don’t think he’s lying necessarily, but the Leafs since Lou have been notoriously tight lipped so it’s odd to hear a rumor come out. Could be media manipulation, Dubas leaking a rumor to scare a team with another D who now think the Leafs may back out of their deal if the price doesn’t come down.
Good point, hopefully putting the rumour out there so Boston or Tampa makes a run and overpays for that slug

Also: I'm not advocating for Chiarot. I'd be pissed if we acquired him.

It's just funny to see him go from top-4 D to shouldn't be on a NHL roster in like a day. If another team added him for like a 4th or 5th I'd be like "good trade", "decent depth" "right partner, right system he's servicable". Makes no sense with us, and his rumored cost is hilariously awful.
