right the ship?

they're 7-3-0 in their last 10 and 11-4-1 since the restart.
Lol and 2 of those losses they lost by one goal and completely dominated. Imagine this team doing this well a few years ago, it definitely wouldn’t be called a slump.

That's a lot of assets to give up for Hertl just to play him less than 15 mpg on the 3rd line, imo. Besides, I really like the idea of a shutdown 3rd line centered by Kampf for the playoffs.

well i have a nice shutdown 3rd line pencilled in as a 4th line there. that's pretty sweet imo.

though tbh Kampf as a 3rd line C kind of looks like a weakness compared to the other elite teams.

but if you prefer:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - Hertl - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kampf - Kase/Engvall
Kerfoot - Spezza - Engvall/Kase

I think Dubas has to sell the farm and load up like the Rams did. This year he needs success.

Make some big moves, bring in a solid top 4 RHD and a top 6 LW. Foligno move last year was the right idea but didn’t work out at all.

I get that the window may be shorter than anticipated. Whether you want to debate if the shutting of the window is Matthews' contract, Tavares' dropoff or whatever. Personally, while the window could rest on a lot of things, for me the main piece is the Matthews contract.

Well, that is still 3 years. Thus, I think it would be a bad idea and shortsighted to go all in this year. Or to put all the eggs in one basket. I think you need to make moves based on the 3 years and even beyond... A guy like Hertl is tempting, and I'd throw in a top asset for him. But multiple top assets (Knies, Niemela, Robertson, Amirov, 2022 1st, 2023 1st) for a rental is just too much.

These assets can definitely help in 2023 and 2024. While Matthews is still here. So if you trade them in multiples for a rental. Well you lose them and the rental after 2022.

It's important to remember that rentals never go for the insane amount people think they will. Sometimes there's an overpayment in pick value but it's pretty rare there are multiple picks and top prospects exchanged. Hertl is a good player but never been a PPG in a season and has had a lot of injuries over the years.

I'd go as far as a 1st, Hirvonen and Dermott or Engvall if they retain 50%. I think this is pretty fair and probably my best offer, maybe another pick as a condition or something. I believe this fits under the cap if Ritchie is dumped by that time. I like Engvall and Dermott but you have to give to get and I think this is a well worth upgrade.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Hertl - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase
Mikheyev - Spezza - Simmonds

The lines don't matter as much since Keefe has no issues juggling ingame to take advantage of situations.

If we can AFFORD to upgrade the LW position, great... but I do believe that the priority should be on D, and then see what we can do, both cap wise, and asset wise from there. I also believe, we should be bringing in players who can play the physical game.

Any kind of upgrade works. If there was the Hertl version on defense I would be all over it but I just don't see one available.

That setup makes more sense to me in the Hertl scenario. Matthews and JT's icetime increases by 2-4 minutes in the playoffs, so our 3rd/4th line centres will be used rather sparingly.

I prefer the first one but yeah a benefit of adding a true line driving two-way C like Hertl instead of just a complementary winger is that it gives you all sorts of options up front.

i've been trying to remember the most expensive deadline rentals.

Pageau went for a (top-3 protected) 1st and a 2nd and I'm trying to think of a more expensive one.

Maybe way back when hossa went for a couple of firsts but i don't really remember.

I think our window is as long as our top guys minus Tavares are here and playing at a high level.

Even losing Tavares is probably not enough to shut our window. That is a lot of cap space and it is not impossible to find a new 2C to somewhat replace him (in UFA, trade, or we may even be able to draft one).

Hertl would fit what this team needs like a glove. He can drive his own production and having another high end C to this lineup will make it very difficult for any team to stop.

His price tag would be very high, though.

Hertl would be amazing but his price tag will be extremely high and he’s a UFA we won’t be able to afford this summer. Not to mention apparently he’s working on a contract extension to stay in San Jose.

That is kind of the package I had in mind as well in terms of the max I would give up for Hertl. He is probably the only rental I would trade a 1st for, unless someone else has slipped my mind. Otherwise, I'd need to see term.

I agree. As odd is it may sound, Tavares will be replaceable at the end of his contract. If the other 3 are re-signed and we continue to draft and develop well and make smart signings, no reason this window can't last way longer.

If they're trading with San Jose, isn't Meier the guy that you want to target? He's got this year and next, along with RFA rights after that.

Nobody (sorry only a few) cares just like last year when we won the North.

Right the ship = right the goaltending and upgrade the D. The last thing we need is for Dubas to go all in and have the goaltending and D sink us in the playoffs.

Hertl is very expensive for a rental add, at that price I'd prefer someone with term but he's also the best rental for them to acquire.

Even though this team is elite I'd want to see more before making such a move. After the TDL & into the playoffs, how would this stack them up against the Avalanche, Golden Knights, Panthers, Lightning, Hurricanes?

Not a chance he’s going anywhere unless the doors are blown off.

We don’t have the assets for that kind of trade. He won’t go for a 1st and a couple of prospects.
Surprised to see his name today after the latest quotes on Hertl situation. He wants to be a Shark, Sharks want to extend him.

At this point he probably costs more than Chychrun.

Hertl is an interesting piece. UFA status isn't ideal but if we win a few rounds we won't care if he walks and if we don't win a few rounds, he'd be a good replacement for whichever of the big 4 get traded.

a) rentals are cheaper than guys with term.
b) we don't really have capspace to add a major contract like that to next year's payroll

I’m down for Hertl if they think they can re-sign him

I think he is going to be a $6m guy to resign so I dont see him staying around. Really nice as a c/w option but I would pay more for Giroux as he is the more proven performer against eastern teams. Cost is the decider as beyond a 1st we dont know how potential dance partners view the expendable Leaf assets(or Dubas for that matter).

also part of the attraction with trading with SJ is maybe being able to get them to throw in a guy like Middleton, who would make both the nerds and the grittastic crowd happy.
