Insider Trading: Petry on the market, but Habs not selling at a discount - TSN.ca

What is Petry’s market looking like?

What is the likelihood and conditions of a potential Jeff Petry trade?

LeBrun: Teams around the league are finding out that Jeff Petry is available as other people have talked about. Kent Hughes, the new general manager, spoke with a number of his veteran players over the past little while in one-to-one meetings to gauge where they are with the future of this team. And the sense is Jeff Petry would welcome a trade. Now, it’s not easy to move him. He’s got three more years on his deal at $6.25 million USD. One league source suggested a scenario to me today that the Dallas Stars could emerge as the team with interest. With the idea being that if the Stars move John Klingberg, who, as we know, has asked for a trade. They can turn around and replace him with Petry, who is signed with term and John Klingberg being a pending unrestricted free agent. Now, the one thing that the Habs are telling teams? They don’t have to move Petry and they’re not moving him at a discount just because he’s struggling this season. Teams have to step up.

Cap relief, anyone?

There are a lot of teams in the NHL who are up against the salary cap, but is there one team out there who’s willing to eat some money?

Johnston: Yeah, 16 of them to be exact, 16 teams as we talk right now that are in long-term injured reserve and capped out. And so those teams might want to get busy before March 21, they’re finding a helpful hand from the Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes have let it be known that they’re willing to take on contracts or money in exchange for future assets. Just as we saw them do with a few transactions over the summer. And they’re still going to look at some things. They want to know how long that contract is if they are bringing on a player. What type of player it is. But the Coyotes are certainly eyeing a chance to be an important go-between at this deadline where so many teams are capped out.

Wonder what it would cost to get Hagel + Murphy out of Chicago?

Probably something with 1st, Robertson and a bit more...we'd likely need to include Mrazek which is fine, they have 0 goalies under contract after this season.

Lost in all the talk about Murphy though from everyone is that he just signed a contract extension and did not go to UFA, I cannot see them trading him before it even kicks in.

Kinda early, but are there any interesting targets for UFA? Looked at capfriendly and saw a few names - a few expensive names haha. I guess it's bargain hunting again this year.

lol what a joke. The media loves carrying water for the Habs. If the Leafs were trying to trade petry, everyone would talk about how he’s an albatross and old and how they need to retain and ‘sweeten’ the pot. But Lebrun talking about the habs’ worst player? “ teams need to step up” lol. Clown behaviour.

Lebrun is a shameless Habs shill.

Other sites are speculating what the Habs will have to be prepared to add to take his contract off their hands.

Anyone expecting a haul for Petry is going to be disappointed.

I think I like "Artturi Lehkonen is this year's Blake Coleman" even more.

Is he even more than a 4th liner on any kind of good team? And they think that he is going to garner a top prospect and a 1st?

And he allowed Marner to get a breakaway on the PK.

Sometimes you have to trust a fanbase when they're talking about a player they've seen for years.
He also gave Kerfoot the breakaway when we were on the PK when all Mikheyev had to do was raise it to score. Severson took the penalty on the play.

His defensive stats are really impressive, and he looked good in last years playoffs.
But to compare him to what Coleman went for is ludicrous. If he gets more than a 2nd (combined value of pick or prospect + pick) I would say no thanks. But if you can get him and loose a guy like Ritchie without adding too much to the deal he would be a good addition. He has a good amount more takeaways vs giveaways over his career, starts a ton of shifts in the d-zone and has a outperformed from a shot perspective his usage IMO.

He would be similar to a Kampf type guy, a bit worse defensively and a bit better offensively.

One of the reasons he hasnt looked as good this and last year is he has a PDO around 95.5.

Who does Lehkonen replace on F when everyone is healthy like right now?

He has been bad. Players have bad stretches.

That thought occurred to me too, so I went to check out the Devils PGT to see if they had any Severson takes. Here's the first one I found:

"Severson has spent 8 long seasons disappointing scoring a goal and giving up two. Tonight's performance was just another night. A soft and laze defenseman that loves to pinch"

If it was up to me?
Hate to say it, but probably Spezza.
Bunting Auston Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Kampf Kase
Lehknen Engval Simmonds/Spezza

He adds speed to the bottom 6. He adds another winger who can play on a shutdown 3rd line if someone gets hurt, or you want to swap some guys around. He is pretty solid on the PK.

Spezza and Simmons have looked better the last two games, but they have had long stretches of looking pedestrian. Lehkonen was one of the better forwards for Montreal all the way to a cup final helping shut down other teams best lines.

Edit: He can also play in case Kase gets hurt which I am still concerned about his longevity.

DeHaan, Miller and Mayfield are becoming my "not gonna cost too much" top 3 to help us out.

He could easily replace Simmonds who hasn’t even been physical at all lately

The topper is when these insiders expect us to believe they don't have a dog in the fight. They're fans just like the rest of us.

Habs are either adding or retaining salary to move Petry, regardless of whatever nonsense Lebrun wants to spew. Same applies to Price, nobody is taking on his full contract.

Im from quebec, so i watch montreal game a lot. Lehkonen look closer of a a small winger david kampf than a blake coleman.

Montreal will not trade lehkonen under a 1st round pick and fo me i dont want to see toronto giving a 1st round for a 4th line player

Oh ya 100%

I agree he is a winger version of Kampf. Very safe low event hockey. A useful player no doubt, but anything higher than a 3rd and I’m not interested.

Yup! But if he ends up being moved late on TDL day just so they can get an asset, I would like him. He adds a interesting element to our bottom 6.

If he is just a winger version of Kampf, doesn't that effectively just make him Engvall?

He is a smaller guy who only plays LW, which is the last place we need another 4th line quality player. If anything, we should be looking to upgrade Simmonds at RW or Spezza at C. Those are the two weakest links in our lineup by far right now.

If Simmonds fails to be a physical presence, Engvall-Brassard-Spezza (Spezza takes face offs) isn't the worst 4th line in the world either.
