I had posted this to Twitter, but I think the best way the Leafs could successfully come out of a Ritchie trade without retaining or paying to dump him is by taking advantage of the trend we've seen where SPC slots have been valued as assets.

The Leafs are at 45/50 contracts, so they could tag on a few extra without greatly hampering their flexibility.

Someone replied that PHI could be a spot since they are at 49/50 contracts and are likely to get a multi-player package for Giroux.

Mock proposal:

Something like Nate Thompson or Nick Seeler, and two of Matt Strome/Maxim Sushko/German Rubtsov for Nick Ritchie.

The Leafs don't add much in value here, but win out by not retaining or paying to dump him and ot helps Philly facilitate the impending Giroux trade.

I thought something like Khaira and Borgstrom out of Chicago for Ritchie, not much difference in $$.

Does breaking up Marner and Matthews make us a deeper team? I can't imagine Matthews would drop off too much with 88 there and Marner can usually get JT going.

I wouldn't change anything with Marner. He finally has his A game back so why risk tinkering? 100 SOG fpr the club in the last 2 losses isn't the same as as not generating anything. I would be inclined to leave the big pieces alone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If we're trading our 1st then I'm going after JT Miller. He is the absolute perfect player to complete our second line with Tavares and Nylander. He's tough, skilled, and locked in for 1 more year after this. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone and include Schenn.

To Toronto-
Miller
Schenn

To Vancouver-
Kerfoot
Holl
Amirov
Holmberg
1st Round Pick

And then see if you could pry Crouse and Lyubushkin from Arizona.

To Toronto-
Crouse
Lyubushkin

To Arizona-
Mikheyev
Ritchie
Dermott
3rd Round Pick

Bunting- Matthews- Marner
Miller- Tavares- Nylander
Crouse- Kampf- Kase
Engvall- Spezza- Simmonds

Rielly- Brodie
Muzzin-Liljegren
Sandin- Schenn
Lyubushkin

You add speed, skill, and toughness with Miller and Crouse upfront, while also adding solid defense and size with Schenn and Lyubushkin on the back end.

Would look to add a third-line centre. I don't think Tavares and Nylander are a good fit together.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Mikheyev - Tavares - Kase
Kerfoot - Bonino - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Spezza/Simmonds

Bonino, a proven playoff performer, signed for this year and next at a manageable cap hit. Coming into a very similar placement as when he won with the Penguins

After I'd look to add a secondary RHD piece with size and call it a day

I like the premise, and the team after, but I don't think Arizona does this. They don't really need LD, and end up getting a soon to be UFA, Ritchie a cap dump, and a LD, when they have four LD signed. The return to Arizona is likely much higher than this.

It's a decent list of players but the scoring depth has to be improved.

Bonino and Kerfoot can't put the puck in the net leaving Willy to do the heavy lifting. He will get shut down easily. If Willy gets promoted, the entire bottom six can't put the puck in the net. Even Kase has only scored 2 goals in 24 playoff games.

What they need is a scoring LW/C to push Mikheyev down. That would be an ideal pickup in my opinion. Guys like Giroux, Miller, or Hertl are probably the best potential names but hard to trade for. However, even a less flashy name can work if the underlying numbers are good.

Keefe's system in its current state generates loads of chances but you also got to put them into the net under duress. Right now they do well in a free-flowing regular-season game but stop converting their chances when the games get tight or physical. A good scoring winger would work, but they also need some growth from within.

It's not the worst problem to have but it is one to work on before the playoffs.

Jeff Petry looks like the obvious choice. We can afford the 2nd rounder + prospect price. It's actually a massive steal if he's still 20/21 form and his current stats are just noise playing for that trash.

Wait I actually don't know If we have a 2nd but the point is the price is nice

Still curious to see if Robertson, Abruzzese or Holmberg can provide that support

I kind of think Ritchie to somewhere in the west. He produced okay for his years out there well enough that those clubs won't be as worried with this year's model. I'm not sure there is a place for him on a Hawks club that may be blowing things up this summer. He seems like a fit for a team that has some things going on but feels they don't have any real toughness in their forwards. That's the allure with NR as he paced for 40pts his last three seasons in middle 6 usage and we know he can absolutely fight. But even with Anaheim he only fought twice a year on a club that lead the league in majors for his time there so you kind of need a GM who thinks their coach can get more out of his toolkit.

The Leafs are 31st in the league in major penalties and don't play a game that promotes/invites aggression or fighting so if he isn't generating any offense then he is no use to them. He clearly isn't a fit with Keefe's system/usage which isn't a knock, it happens and not every player move works out. But how often has KD admitted a move was wrong and addressed it during the season? Does he think he helped Nick adjust as well as he could have from the outset? History says Ritchie stays but we know the club will be a buyer at the deadline so never say never because cap in needs cap out.

100%.

If he didn't get hurt, Robertson should have been in that spot by now.

In the coming years, at least two of these younger guys will have to fill secondary roles in the forward group. You can add Knies and Amirov into the mix too.

Way behind is a stretch. Dislocate his shoulder ? Come on, are we watching the same video ?? It was a pass that a $7m, elite winger should be able to handle IMO. Willie played like ass last night.

If he reached back any further the blade of his stick would be pointing toward the puck. It's simple anatomy dude. Calm down a bit. He played it wrong. But it was a horrible pass.

Lol. I am calm. We just agree to disagree. Big picture, it won't matter unless it happens late in a tied playoff game.

I think they will need a LD when Chychrun is gone though. Moser and Capobianco can't play in the top 4. Dermott is a lot better than both

I think that Kerfoot is a goner.

That's one spot we can upgrade with someone physical.

Mik is next for sure (not to be traded, but for 2LW dog house). He whiffs more than Kerfoot, is a worse passer and isn't strong on the boards. Top 4 Ds don't even flinch when they have to battle him in our top 6. Easy win.

Trade coming soon. You can feel it.
