Should the Leafs try to sign Kadri this off-season?

1.) Severson sucks
2.) Giroux is not a luxury addition. If Dubas can big brain his way to adding Giroux Leafs are the scariest team in the league. I don't think people understand how close Leafs are to the cup.
3.) I despise Holl. With that said, De Haan, Soucy etc are not significant upgrades. It cant just be an upgrade, it needs to be an upgrade that meets a certain threshold to move us up ranks. Better off looking at forwards if you can't find one and look for cheaper #6 options for D instead.

Giroux would be awesome. But the amount of cap gymnastics and the fact he would be a rental would be a huge risk. We would need to pay for the name. We would need to then pay extra for the cap gymnastics. He would only be here for one run. If we are going to make a big deal and pay a hefty price, might as well be for someone who would be here for a few runs and maybe a little more of a need and less of a luxury.

Claude Giroux is probably a pipe dream because you would probably need to find trade destinations for Kerfoot and Ritchie (without money coming back) and still get retention in order to make it work. That said, on can always dream about being able to roll 3 lines that look like this, for a playoff run.

Bunting-Matthews-Kase
Mikheyev-Tavares-Marner
Engvall-Giroux-Nylander
Simmonds-Kampf-Spezza

Or

Bunting-Matthews-Giroux
Mikheyev-Tavares-Marner
Kase-Kampf-Nylander
Engvall-Spezza-Simmonds

Either way, that lineup could be deadly.

I don think it would be that hard really, if you assume Ritchie is going the other way. Philly likes their beefy boys, and will need people who can play next year. We have just over 925k in deadline cap space right now as well.

The issue being that you wouldnt have any money to do any other move after the additional cap gymnastics.

Any thoughts of going after someone like Siegenthaler?
He has some pretty insane defensive metrics, and is just a bit below average offensively.

I wonder if a deal around Dermott for him makes sense? Both are guys around 25, with an extra year left on their deals, both LHD. Dermott is much better with the puck (when he isnt spinning in his own end), with Siegs being the polar opposite as a guy who is supper effective defensively.

I prefer the idea of him as the a bottom pairing guy / a #7 D for this playoff run than Dermott.
Next year, you can run a bottom pair of him and Liljgren if Sandin gets a bump onto Muzzins pairing.

Why cant we do what tampa did last year.
Put muzzin on ltir for the rest of the regular season. Bring him back a week before playoffs with a conditioning stint with the marlies.

use his 5 million cap hit to bring in a couple of players.

With our approx 1 million cap to use at the deadline
5million replacement for muzzin
2.5 milliin from ritchie going back in a trade

that would be some serious coin to use at the desdline. We could add just about anyone we wanted

What if Muzzin is fit and wants to play?

Good. Manson sucks. This is his only decent season in the last 4.

Ron hainsey sucks the 4 he played in caroline begore get traded to pittsburgh and he did a hell of a job in pittsburgh and was peetty good with rielly after that.

An shutdown d in an awful team will always suck.

If you can get them cheap then sure. Not paying a premium for bad defensemen on bad hockey teams.

Price should look very similar to what pittsburgh paid for hainsey

A sedond pick and a depht prospect like abramov, abruzzese, holmberg, tverberg, etc...

With all player available not sure we will see 8 player traded for a 1st

You add Floride, carolina, colorado and vegas are already out of 1st

Team who will be very agressive to upgrade their d will look at klindberg( if available at trade deadline), ristolainen, giordano and lindholm first. So i dont think player like manson or chiarot will get a 1st round pick.

It's been reported that Toronto does not want pure rentals. They want players signed beyond this season.

Scott Mayfield for Dermott & 2nd

Lawson Crouse for Ritchie & Robertson/Amirov

Crouse - Matthews - Nylander
Bunting - Tavares - Marner
Mikheyev - Kampf - Kase
Engvall - Spezza - Simmonds
Clifford

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Mayfield
Sandin - Liljigren
Holl

You can’t just LTIR players for any length of time. You need a reasonable medical assessment + conditioning assignment.

Hockey doctors are still medical doctors and are committing fraud if they fudge diagnoses for any reason.

Honestly I'm convinced some people's objective here is to make us worse with some of these proposals.
I looked at that and saw the minimal (if any) upgrade on D by mortgaging a big chunk of now and future.

I don't even pretend to understand some of these proposals. And it's not a slight against any particular poster, just a general observation that there is a huge and massive overrating of other team's players while simultaneously devaluing ours down to "equitable cap hits going back".

He is out with a concussion. No doctor can estimate when someone is feeling better from it. Only the player knows how he feels.

I don't think you can fake a diagnosis (i.e. make up an injury for a healthy player), but they can definitely fudge return times (i.e. it takes 3 months to return from a concussion when it is possible he could have returned after 3 weeks)... Especially if the player is fine with it.

Kucherov was practicing for a while before he finally returned for the playoffs. You don't think he was able to return for the regular season?

I don't think that should be allowed either, and I certainly would not advocate for it, but I doubt anyone will complain about being "overly cautious" when it comes to concussions especially.

We can also just look at a guy like Nick Robertson. I am fairly sure he was expected to return in December. Now he won't be returning until early February after breaking his leg... And that is probably one of the easier ones to predict when it comes to being ready to return.

You're right but it's not that simple.

If a player says they don't feel right or aren't ready then they aren't. Not at all suggesting we LTIR Muzzin for the rest of the season, just pointing out their is some level of subjectivity to it.

It wasn't just by some miracle that Kucherov was ready for game 1 of the playoffs instead of a week or two earlier or later.

Who are some D not named Chychrun that may be available with some term beyond this season?

If you overlook a really bad season this year, then Phil Myers out of Nashville is still the one who makes the most sense for the potential price, cap structure, etc.

I think we can get him + Cousins (@50%) for Ritchie, Dermott, and a prospect. That gives us a cheap but quality 4th liner/depth forward with grit and a guy with the potential to be a top 4 upgrade for two players and a prospect we can afford to move.

Nashville is a competitive team though, which likely reduces the probability that they make such a move. I've really liked Myers though, and had hoped we could get him out of Philly as early as two years ago.

Columbus isn't so competitive. Andrew Peeke is a young emerging middle pairing guy, physical, mobile, defensively strong.... That's the type we should target, if we can't cheaply get a more experienced guy.
