I'm primarily of the belief that the team will look to add to the blueline because Liljegren currently has yet to appear in a playoff game. I'd obviously expect him to play, though probably not every game (ex. Sandin of last season's playoffs), and much will depend upon how far the team progresses. I'd be quite surprised to see him start in the top four. I think the quality of said d-man - if acquired - will partly reflect where the team best sees Holl slotting in.

Posted in the other lines thread but:

Barring the ability to get a good right shot top four D on a reasonable deal (Severson for example) - I think what they should do is try to get Hertl or Pavelski (a legit top end forward rental). Then what I would do is:

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Hertl - Tavares - Marner
Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase
Mikheyev Engvall Spezza

Make the opposing teams in the playoffs choose to defensively match Matthews-Nylander or that supercharged Tavares line.

I assume an injury or two will move Mikheyev back into the top nine at some point but this gives you a few more options.
Soft as butter

I think two trades are needed if we think this is a year to go for it.
I would like to add
  • Someone who can improve the second pair, but doesnt need to be a big name. Its more important for them to be calm and make smart plays than throw big hits and be flashy IMO.
  • Someone to replace Kerfoot on the 2nd line, but more as a Bunting type digger than a pure offensive guy.
    • Kefoots counting stats are inflated, and the underlying numbers look less than good
    • Nylander-Tavares as a line do better without him on the line
  • A better spare/bottom pair D who plays defense first in case of injury. Preferably someone who plays both sides
  • Some more speed on the bottom 6, preferably who plays a smart defensive game and can still matchup against good lines. We need more speed in the bottom 6, Spezza and Simmonds too often look a bit behind the play.

1) DeHaan@50% + Hagel
  • I still think DeHaan can be a solid #4 if he doesnt need to be the one moving the puck all the time
  • Hagel has 2 more years at a low cap hit, something its been reported Toronto is looking for. He PKs and has a good nose for the net, perfect for a Marner/Nylander to find for tap ins and rebounds from Matthews/Tavares.
2) Siegenthaler + Zacha
  • Sieg is having a really good defensive season on an abysmal team.
    • He doesnt have any real offensive upside, but he can actually skate pretty well which is rare for a defensive first bottom pair guy.
    • Is only 24, and makes less than Dermott next year.
    • Has played both the L and R sides in the AHL and the NHL to a lesser extent.
  • Zacha has been very good defensively, but hasnt been able to get the offensive game together yet. He skates well, forechecks well, and is positionally sound. Plays on the PK. But just cant get top 6 offensive production even with the minutes.
  • IMO, he is our ideal 3C. Better offensively than Kampf, but a bit worse defensively.
    • By demoting Kampf to the 4th line, you get much faster overall in your bottom 6 and get to rest one of Spezza/Simmonds most games.
Give up Dermott, Ritchie, Kefoot (I would add in Holl, but dont think they would be willing) and whatever picks are needed. Getting the younger guys with term in Siegs and Hagel is good for the cap, and Zacha is a RFA who should be cheaper than Kerfoot.

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander OR Bunting - Matthews - Kase
Hagel - Tavares - Marner Hagel - Tavares - Marner
Mikheyev - Zacha - Kase Mikheyev - Zacha - Nylander
Engval - Kampf - Spezza/Simmonds Engval - Kampf - Spezza/Simmonds

Reilly - Brodie
Muzzin - DeHaan
Sandin - Liljgren / Holl
Siegs - Liljgren / Holl

Sorry for the long post, was stuck in traffic so had a good amount of time to look around!

Read the first part of this and instantly thought of Hagel and de Haan retained as the top package I'd go for. I was pleasantly surprised as I kept reading.

Im sure if you pick certain things to measure, they might be top-5 defensively.

Shit they dropped to 6th by .01 last night.

My biggest concern with the d is lack of size and physicality. Since holl was on protocol and muzzin out, it an aspect of the game really hurt the team
Also why I'm shifting more towards impact forward over D. Similar to Pens back to back cup runs in 16 and 17. We don't need prime Kessel level because we have 4 big forwards, but someone with the potential to go near point per game beside one of matthews/marner/nylander is a more significant add than a no.4 based on the names available.

Got a taste of life without muzzin-holl. If anyone has a shred of integrity they will admit Muzzin-Holl actually is a good pairing. Our defence sucks without it. Rielly-Brodie Muzzin-Holl is not the end of the world if they roll with it. Do I want to upgrade Holl? Yes. Has my opinion changed that it's a mandatory upgrade? Also yes. 50% of my 600 posts are "get rid of Holl" posts, so this post is major for me and out of my comfort zone.

What I did see is we need some backup #6 instead just incase Liljegren doesn't have a good playoffs.

Sandin was miles ahead of Liljegren today last season and got wrecked in the playoffs, so need to have a contingency plan. A Bogosian on standby so to speak.

Thats why i really hope duck will miss the playoff, manson is the guy this team need

I know after the top 4 foward its thin but to drive the offence thats why they get paid that much. Thats also why i love the fact we drive matthews nylander and marner on 3 different line. They played pretty well against duck and hope its still like that. But I would like to see spezza with kerfoot and nylander and kampf with engvall and simmonds before the end of the season

Maybe those people should look at the team's performance and defensive performance and realize that they are obviously wrong.

They're 11th is xGA/60 and 16th in High Danger Chances/60, so there is room for improvement.

You know what is worse than an unproven defenceman? A proven shitty defenceman.

I'm not agreeing with the idea that a unproven 3rd pair is bad. I don't mind a Sandin-Liljegren 3rd pair in the playoffs.

Per evolving-hockey.com:

#3 xGA/60 at all strengths
#5 xGA/60 shorthanded
#10 xGA/60 even strength (but closer to #2 than to #14)
#10 xGA/60 at 5v5 (but closer to #2 than to #13)
