If looking for a defensive Dman, according to the Athletics Player Cards, Dylan DeMelo is having a heck of a year. He's signed for two more years after this year (3M/), and because he's only scored 4 points this year in 36 games, he might cost less, with greater defensive impacts, than many already discussed. The obvious starting point would be Holl, but what might be the add that intrigues the Peg?

DeMelo is someone I’ve wanted Dubas to pursue for a while now and I think he’d be a great addition.

Don't know that Winnipeg would have any appetite to move him at anything resembling a reasonable price.

Would flipping Ritchie for Austin Watson (2.5M v 1.5M this year and next) with an add of a mid tier prospect make sense? Watson here would be on the taxi squad, I'd guess, and Ritchie should have some chance with Ottawa.

Man we dodged a bullet with Foligno ...... but still a 1st and 2 4ths - ouch. Makes me wonder though, he did nothing (the few times he was in the lineup) and they wanted him back. Jumbo was awful, Simmonds was re-signed after being awful (he's since played better) and now Ritchie is terrible.

I wanted this guy when he was a UFA. Steady. Good player. Holl out Demelo in would make me quite happy.

Watson has a checkered past but looking at it from a hockey move only I would do this. Small prospect add. Nothing significant.

I mean I don't think one is required for the other to take place. It's obviously a good call in principle to go out and find a depth defenseman. Dermott and Holl have both underperformed and Muzzin is shaky; enough cause to motivate an acquisition regardless of Muzzin's status. The state of Muzzin's status only serves to inform the quality of the acquisition target IMO.

I like Chiarot as a 3rd pairing guy but I really can't see it considering the ridiculous rumoured price.

chariot is a garbage ....... he had 1 good playoff and everyone is going coocoo for coco puffs
i think the last thing we need a defensman who treats the puck like a grenade... (codi ceci 2.0)

Not to mention his good playoffs was playing beside Shea Weber who was an absolute beast in that series

Something to consider, is we've blown the last two playoff series because we couldn't score. The other teams hyper focus on Matthews, and Nylander alone can't win us a series.

It may not be a terrible idea to acquire a scoring player to create more depth.

In a ideal world, before I thought the defense was a issue, I was behind Toronto acquiring a real impact forward, someone that can make a difference in the game like Forsberg or Hertl, Giroux. That way if the offence was getting matched, they would have another player that could score, not a depth piece like Foligno,Nash,Boyle,Plek etc.

We are in a lot of more trouble if Holl/Muzzin continue to struggle or if one of Moe/Brodie/Muzzin get hurt in the playoffs.

I'd much rather Lyubushkin over Chiarot. He's only getting 16 - 17 minutes a night but he plays a physical game. Defensive minded first. Clears the front of the net. Gets the puck out when needed. Decent first pass to get out of the D zone. Good on the boards. I don't think he's a second pairing guy on a good team but after seeing 20+ games from him this year, he looks good. And cheap.

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Liljegren
Sandin Lyubushkin
Dermott

Rotate 4 through 7 and even throw in Muzzin once in a while on games against lesser competition.

Agreed. The defense is an issue, but I'm not sure the market has an available D that would be the proper fit. If the fit isn't there, go for the best available F who can finish. Better forwards will help the defense as well.

John Klingberg and Chiarot would make the team better, but by not a big enough factor. Especially if the price for those guys would be potentially less than the price of Hertl

Too many people sleeping on Lyubushkin's defensive impact. I think outside Arizona, there's a chance he could be a top-4 guy.

The way I kind of look at it is that Ritchie should have a chance with more then a few teams. He's been a productive NHL'er up to this point and he's not too far off from career norms. With one year left after this one if the Leafs have the opportunity to be patient. They can potentially rehab his game a bit and sell him for positive value in part due his style of play and the demand for it league wide. The doors open a bit at the trade deadline and the draft/FA.

Who are they really going to trade for that they need his cap space for up front? Their top-9 is blossoming. Take a look at the rental FA's and their cost to acquire. How many of them when considering cost to acquire and the success/chemistry of the top-9 as currently constructed are really a good fit? They don't need to move Ritchie in a rush to fit anyone in up front.

They will likely add on defense. Manson or Mayfield make sense. To upgrade on Holl at #4D. They could swap out Holl or Dermott to make room for the incoming cap, along with the accrued space which could reach 1M by the deadline.

He could. I've watched enough of him to say with confidence that he's better than Holl this year. He could be exactly what Muzzin needs to get his game back.

What’s even more refreshingly lucky, if Foligno signs that contract it likely means no Kampf

Oh I like this. Isn’t he on the 3rd pairing with the Jets? Maybe they would want to clear some cap for a forward addition instead of paying a third pair defenseman $3 mill. They also have to pay PLD and Copp in off-season too.

Trade one of Dermott/Holl for pick(s) or in a package for a top-9 forward and I’m happy.

Literally no one is going crazy for Chariot. No one.

Cody Ceci played top-4 minutes for us. We don't get this defenseman for how slick he is with the puck - Rielly, Brodie, Sandin, Lilly, and Muzzin are all good with the puck. I want defensive responsibility (inclusive of whatever defensive style works for this player), net clearing, and occasional crushing hits.

Pretty solid on a bad team, but hope that offence can translate to being better on a good team because I don't want the puck dying on his stick every play.

Chiarot would be a good add if the cost wasn't a first round pick. Unfortunately, the Blues or Panthers will likely pay that price.

Sidenote: People really like to over-exaggerate when they talk about how "bad" a player is. Like no way you guys would take any of the seven guys we have over Chiarot.

Somewhat of a risk with both guys, as neither have played top 4 minutes to an extended period of time. Kind of like Dermott has his whole career, they're getting these amazing results against worse competition. I think Soucy is a guy who could potentially handle that bigger workload though.

The thing with Soucy is he doesn't have to handle those minutes night in and night out to be a value add to this team. The mobility, versatility, sandpaper, and pk ability makes him pretty ideal to be anywhere 4-7 this year and next.

I think Soucy *can* play both sides but has been mostly playing LD on Seattle this year.

Although now on RD with Giordano as his partner...he'd be a great add for us if the price was right.

Chiarot is terrible.

Giving up a first for him would be a disgrace. All he had was a good burst of games cause Weber carried him in the playoffs.

It's tough to find a good top 4 RHD right now. Maybe Connor Murphy if you can fit in the cap hit?

It’s hard to say whether Lyubushkin is a material upgrade over Holl or Dermott, but you can easily see the style being nice beside Sandin.
I imagine that was the plan when the team went after Hakanpaa. Let him cover for Rasmus.
