Is Chiarot even that good? 1st and a prospect seems high for a guy like that. I'd rather look at someone else or even give our young guys more time or bring up some of the Marlies and see how they do.
No, he really is not. Was decent with Weber I guess, but a lot of underwhelming defensemen looked good with Weber. There is a reason he is likely heading to the HoF.

How about instead of throwing away assets on overhyped UFA's, we make a smarter move that makes sense for our budget? For example:

RD Philippe Myers
LW Nick Cousins (50% retention)
C Anthony Richard

LD/RD Travis Dermott
LW Nick Ritchie
C Semyon Der-Arguchintsev
Leafs justification
- Myers is a good rehab candidate for us and it gives both Ritchie and Dermott a change of scenery. If Myers works out, we have a great RD for next year and we can move Holl. If not, it should be just as easy to dump him as it would be to dump Ritchie. Liljegren becomes our #7 (unfortunately he loses out to a numbers game until injuries hit) and considering he is more than good enough to play in our everyday lineup, we should have fairly good defensive depth heading into the playoffs.
- Cousins is a pest and local kid with a Dubas/Soo connection. Very similar to Hagel, whose name gets thrown around a lot recently. Would be a great fit for our struggling 4th line (when Engvall is not on it), and is someone with enough center experience to spot Spezza (major need for us when Engvall is not on the 4th line). He is a pending UFA and may be worth re-signing, but no big deal if he is not.
- Cost is well within the Leafs' price range, especially when we are adding a guy with term, and while it doesn't solve our cap problems for next year, it doesn't make them worse (unlike most moves for upgrades with term).
- Overall, our depth should not be any weaker than it was before this move, with the potential for our team (not just our depth) to be significantly better if Myers thrives.
- Anthony Richard is an AHL vet who replaces SDA on the Marlies. Mostly just evens up the contracts, but could audition as a AAAA option for us next year.
Preds justification
- Myers is a pricey healthy scratch. Dermott is a guy in a similar situation at a similar age with similar upside here. Gives them a chance on a new guy who may work out better in their system as a more natural puck mover.
- They use guys like McCarron and Harpur in their lineup, so they would have no issues playing Ritchie. He has a nice chance to rebound in Nashville, and they could use a guy like him in their top 9.
- Get a solid prospect in SDA for retaining on Cousins, and they only add 700k in cap this year when they have plenty of cap to play with overall. Since they should be buyers, adding another solid prospect helps at the TDL.
Seems like a win-win and the exact type of moves the Leafs should be making at the TDL this year. No top prospects. No 1st/2nd's. No pricey rentals (Cousins with 50% retention likely only costs a 3rd).
