I'd take him over Sandin, would have at the draft if he fell to the Sandin pick and still would today. Saying he's not actually good is like saying Sandin is not actually good.

Except that Sandin is actually good and Miller isn't.

Miller's size and skating more than offset any perceived difference in offensive talent,

Nah size and skating doesn't make up for being a worse player.

But I agree an organization like Arizona might agree with you.

Hell, an organization gave up a 1st and 2nd round pick and more for Ristolainen.

Riles - Brodie
Muzzle - xxxx
Sandin - Holl
Lilly
Dermott
Dahlstrom

If we want to compete this should be the minimum they try to improve imo.

Ideally I think you also look for a 3rd pairing defender to push Sandin down until next year.

Ideal world they would do this, but Holl / Dermott will be going back to the other team to try get money out. Unlesss a team bites and takes Ritchie back instead, but I am pretty sure hes owed 3m real dollars so might not be do able,

All in all, Toronto really needs to add a impact defenseman, if one of Muzz/Brodie/Moe get hurt in the playoffs, we get signifigant weaker.

According to Friedman the Leafs are in on Chiarot. The price is likely to be a first + a prospect. Acquiring him for such a package would mean Dubas is throwing the analytical approach, which he built this team on, out the window.

Is Chiarot even that good? 1st and a prospect seems high for a guy like that. I'd rather look at someone else or even give our young guys more time or bring up some of the Marlies and see how they do.

No, he really is not. Was decent with Weber I guess, but a lot of underwhelming defensemen looked good with Weber. There is a reason he is likely heading to the HoF.

How about instead of throwing away assets on overhyped UFA's, we make a smarter move that makes sense for our budget? For example:

:leafs
RD Philippe Myers
LW Nick Cousins (50% retention)
C Anthony Richard

:nashville
LD/RD Travis Dermott
LW Nick Ritchie
C Semyon Der-Arguchintsev

Leafs justification
- Myers is a good rehab candidate for us and it gives both Ritchie and Dermott a change of scenery. If Myers works out, we have a great RD for next year and we can move Holl. If not, it should be just as easy to dump him as it would be to dump Ritchie. Liljegren becomes our #7 (unfortunately he loses out to a numbers game until injuries hit) and considering he is more than good enough to play in our everyday lineup, we should have fairly good defensive depth heading into the playoffs.
- Cousins is a pest and local kid with a Dubas/Soo connection. Very similar to Hagel, whose name gets thrown around a lot recently. Would be a great fit for our struggling 4th line (when Engvall is not on it), and is someone with enough center experience to spot Spezza (major need for us when Engvall is not on the 4th line). He is a pending UFA and may be worth re-signing, but no big deal if he is not.
- Cost is well within the Leafs' price range, especially when we are adding a guy with term, and while it doesn't solve our cap problems for next year, it doesn't make them worse (unlike most moves for upgrades with term).
- Overall, our depth should not be any weaker than it was before this move, with the potential for our team (not just our depth) to be significantly better if Myers thrives.
- Anthony Richard is an AHL vet who replaces SDA on the Marlies. Mostly just evens up the contracts, but could audition as a AAAA option for us next year.

Preds justification
- Myers is a pricey healthy scratch. Dermott is a guy in a similar situation at a similar age with similar upside here. Gives them a chance on a new guy who may work out better in their system as a more natural puck mover.
- They use guys like McCarron and Harpur in their lineup, so they would have no issues playing Ritchie. He has a nice chance to rebound in Nashville, and they could use a guy like him in their top 9.
- Get a solid prospect in SDA for retaining on Cousins, and they only add 700k in cap this year when they have plenty of cap to play with overall. Since they should be buyers, adding another solid prospect helps at the TDL.

Seems like a win-win and the exact type of moves the Leafs should be making at the TDL this year. No top prospects. No 1st/2nd's. No pricey rentals (Cousins with 50% retention likely only costs a 3rd).

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. This is the year to go all in. If we don't win anything there will be major changes. At the personnel level and at the management level. Put all the chips on the table.

I think they should go after Chychrun. Not only is he an excellent two way defenseman but he fits the playing style of this team. Cost? Something similar to Sandin, Robertson, and a 1st. Worth it IMO. He is a top pairing d-man on a hell of a contract. The way this team is structured, both cap wise and player wise, adding Chychrun might very well be the most effective improvement possible. You aren't going to find a better defenseman in that price range, and certainly not in that price range long term. The only issue here would be the cap. Dermott and Holl would probably both have to go. Not good considering the depth is already an issue

Great, another overpriced vet to burn assets on come the TDL

A little patience wouldn't go amiss, better options will come onto the market surely

The trade deadline approaching means you're going to see a lot of headlines as insiders try to generate click and hype for their trade deadline shows etc.

Attaching Toronto to a lot of things can get eyes.

When’s the deadline this year?

I call bull. Chiarot is not good and there's no way someone like Dubas would move a 1st for him.
Well, he moved one for a useless, already-broken Foligno last year, that signals to me his idiocy knows no bounds.
_____
Blow your wad on Chychrun, do things properly by paying more and getting way more than what Chiarot gives. If the asset cost is too prohibitive, I target Lyubushkin, think he’s a solid RHD with physicality and several prime years left.

God please don't remind me. Really I don't think adding Chychrun makes the difference between us winning a cup or not. I think as the team is constructed they can win if Matthews and Marner play to their capabilities in the playoffs and the defense holds it together like they have so far this season. I'd honestly rather just hold on to our first rounder for a change then look at re-tooling in the summer if we lose again. By then it'd be obvious that some kind of massive trade would need to be made.

100% agree the most pragmatic approach would be patience; I personally do not believe in this team as constructed or while its primary core remains as is, so I’m all for keeping draft assets to restock. But if we’re serious about trying to run, a physical Dman to supplant Holl on 2nd unit and work with Muzzin to shutdown 1st lines is the biggest step forward towards that goal, in my mind

Why are people so down on Chiarot? Last post-season, he was a crucial part of the Habs defense.

I would be all for picking him up.

Boys, I’m fully on the Carson Soucy trade train. But it doubt Seattle moves him.

I thought I hated giving up a 1st for Foligno?

If I see Dubas give up another 1st for Chiarot, I will completely lose my $#!t.

Love the Myers proposal. I wanted him from he pre Flyers day and I think he could be an upgrade over Holl and a long term fit on RHD.

if Dubas trades another 1st for a bad rental player...

we're not even likely to be favourites in our first round series. This isn't the year to trade futures for one postseason run. Last year was the right time but unfortunately they targeted the wrong guys. This year might be the wrong team with still the wrong guys lol.

If we're moving the 1st or top prospects it has to be something that helps next year as well imo.

I'll be quite grossed out if the Leafs move a 1st for Chiarot. Not against the player completely but at that cost, let someone else have him. No thank you.
