I think the MAF option looks great from the outside cause let's face it, anything looks better than the goaltending we have now. But it really feels like it would be an expensive bandaid solution.
We have a few issues at play.
1. I think for starters, people imagine it would be like getting playoff Price in net. Don't think it would be nearly that level. He is surely capable of it, but don't like the chances.
2. I think there is also the thought of just him coming in and saving everything. I think the adjustment period for a new goalie on a new team would be a big one and take a while. Like long enough that the adjustment will yet to have been made once we hit the playoffs. Hey maybe he hits the ground running, but I don't know.
3. Fleury isn't without his warts. He's aging and has lost his job a couple times himself.
4. And I saved the biggest problem for last. He's a pending UFA. He will cost a lot to acquire. You hope he wins us the Cup. But if not, then what? You have the same issue in the summer. Need to shore up the goaltending. That will cost trade assets that we already spent on Fleury. Or it will have to be a signing. We all know how this place feels about any Dubas contract above the minimum with term. Have fun with that.
If you could make a move right now that would shore up the position for a few runs (i.e. trading for a Fleury who is 3 years younger with 3 more years on his contract), you do it and you do it right now. I don't think that move is currently there. If that's the case, one of Soup or Mrazek need to figure it out and then re-evaluate and address the issue in the summer. The issue needs to be stitched up and all at once, rather than covering it with a new bandaid every so often. MAF might be one of those fancier bandaids with extra adhesive, rather than the standard children's Spongebob ones. It likely cost you more at the store as well. But in the end, a bandaid will still fall off
