Might be time to acknowledge that we're a first round exit again because we are stuck with these two sub par tenders for this season. I'd look to trade kerfoot, Mik, holl, and dermott. Gain some pics back bring up steeves, Anderson, kral, etc. This way the first round exit won't hurt the team as bad and we free up some cap before ufa. I'd also look to dump Mrazek as well.

Being sellers isn’t just about being a playoff team
It’s about thinking ahead
Knowing the team still needs upgrades to be a serious contender and getting assets for parts that won’t be here long term

VGK could have been sellers for their inaugural trade deadline but instead opted to forge ahead and eventually became Cup finalists to cap off that season. I'd say that Toronto recently trading for a pending UFA in Lyubushkin offers some insight into the team's current focus. I feel that the offseason is the better time for the kind of assessment and asset management you've alluded to. I'd partially worry about the team being built in the wrong manner if it's in need of upgrades in order to become a serious contender at this point of the build.

There’s no chance Dubas is selling lol.

What would it take for Gibson? Mrazek, 2023 first, Mikheyev + b prospect ?

Other than Holtby and Georgiev, no other goalies that are rumoured to be available fit the team's system and cap structure. If we could find a taker for Mrazek (maybe Oilers if they find a spot to dump Koskinen's expiring deal?) and bring in one of Holtby/Georgiev to tandem with Jack that's an instant upgrade.

It's a bit misleading to look at those totals in isolation. Compare them to the opponent's goalies, and in particular, look at those numbers in the series-clinching games.
The issue is it keeps happening with pretty much whatever goalie the leafs put in. Andy was a choker in the playoffs, Campbell will do much better was the narrative not too long ago. Then Campbell gets destoryed the last like 2 or 3 games last playoffs. The constant in all of this is a lack of offense when it matters most, especially given how much resources are directed towards offense.

can the Leafs afford Gibson for next year. He has a cap hit of 6.4?

Not without sacrificing elsewhere.

We could afford to do Varlamov if we move Mrazek. 1.2 mill more than Mrazek, and then we get go after a new backup in the offseason if Campbell is too expensive to re-sign (I think they at least sign a one-year backup to buy Woll another year).

Varlamov was 5th in Vezina last year, and is still pretty good this year considering his team in front of him and the fact he had Covid. Islanders are likely motivated to move him based on the amount they are spending for him to be a backup to Sorokin.

I am sure EDM will be interested in him as well, with them being able to ship assets + an expiring Koskinen for him. IDK how much the Leafs care about his ties to Russia as well, if that is any kind of issue. Of course, EDM also has an issue with cap next year, whereas we can realistically afford to add a guy like Varlamov with a 2-2.5 mill backup.

For Gibson to work, we'd effectively need to turn to Woll as a backup or hope to hit gold on a bargain bin guy.

Our bottom pairing D are getting murdered in front of the net though. I can see the justification behind a Schenn type so that you don't have to dress both Sandin and Liljegren in the playoffs.

You already don't need to.

In fact, you don't need to dress either if Muzzin is back by the playoffs.

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Dermott-Lyubushkin

Although I imagine Sandin will get in over Dermott.
