Dubas bet on Campbell and it backfired

Well after last season I think most people were expecting Campbell to comeback and be solid again and in the first part of the season he wasn't just solid, he was great. Some people were even wondering if Dubas had made a mistake by not resigning Jack before he started playing so well and now it looks like it was a good decision by Dubas to not give a new contract just yet.

there’s no reason Toronto and the Isles couldn’t make a deal. In fact, they have since Lou got there

Varlamov hasn't been great this year either, but that could just be his team too.

Half of his 16 games have been sub .900, which is not good for a 5 mill goalie.

The Islanders may be happy to dump the contract TBH. They don't want a 5 mill backup.

However I believe there is bit of a stink around Varlamov's character right now, and EDM may be desperate enough to give up a huge return for him, so IDK if there are really good chances he comes here.

Like my prom date. We don't need top tier, just good enough will do

I think, more like hope, Dubas said he's not concerned about the goalies just to not fuel any mental fire Campbell might be suffering from. Give him a last minute morale boost, and if this boost fails too, it's over for Campbell. Plus if teams know we're desperate, the trade price goes up. So it's better to portray confidence.

He didn't extend Campbell in the off-season, which confirms he did have some doubts. He took a "show me" approach instead. Well, he's been shown. Grade of F. I see a trade happening soon.

Sucks to say but I don’t think this team is worth spending assets on. If they want to make a pure hockey trade, maybe. Giving up futures this year is a waste. There’s nothing they can acquire to get them anything but a first round exit.

It could also be the other way around. Maybe Campbell's side said we won't sign until end of the season hoping for a big season. Or MLSE said no, I mean he does have senior leadership to run by depending on contract types

But I think he knew Jack isn't the goalie he got. That's why he got Mrazek. I bet Dubas had his doubts. The red flags were always there

I can't see him getting a goalie. There's just nobody out there

I think I’m turning the corner and hoping we become sellers rather then buyers and try to fix this next year

But mystery the a serious run at chychrun hasn’t been made only because he’s an immediate upgrade but also long term

why allow florida or Tampa or Boston to get him instead?

While the team could very well drop down to a wild card spot, I just can't imagine them falling out of the playoff race entirely. As such, I don't see any realistic possibility where they become sellers.

The goaltending is frightening but this team has to much talent to just give up on this season

The goaltending available sucks, unless somebody surprising comes available we might as well forget about that one

Improve the team with an eye to the future and fit, not just biggest name available and hope like hell one of our goaltenders pulls his head out of his ass

I'd even be tempted to call up one of the young goaltenders on the Marlies

Leave no stone unturned, this season is to important to die wondering

I'm in the same boat. Let the team prove they're worthy of spending our assets on an upgrade. Thus far, they're not worthy. Hold tight until proven otherwise.

Should have probably targeted Demko when nucks had Markstrom as the number 1 guy. Few other examples as well but I feel like Leafs should gamble a bit, I'm sure there will be other opportunities starting as soon as next year.

Leafs can still be salvaged with just average goaltending if you look at the underlying numbers. Our cup odds will still decrease a lot but at least we will have some sort of chance.

Not doing a move is a fireable offence because they know the same numbers we know.

How about Mrazek for Holtby and Khudobin.
Cap is a wash if the leafs put khodobin in minors for regular season. He could be a third stringer come playoff. He and Holtby have both had runs in playoffs deep.
Stars have turned to Oettinger now and Mrazek gives them a vet backup.

Easy pass. Khudobin's extra year is a major no-go at his age.

It would be much easier to find a taker for Mrazek than Khudobin, if we decide to move Mrazek.

One thing I don't like that Dubas does: those bold, overconfident messages to the media. I mean....just shutup already. He didn't have to tell everyone that they're not looking for a goalie. If you want to instill confidence in your goalies, say something to them in private. Stop with these media messages, proverbs and studied one-liners.

Being sellers isn’t just about being a playoff team
It’s about thinking ahead
Knowing the team still needs upgrades to be a serious contender and getting assets for parts that won’t be here long term
