GDT: Trade and Free Agency Thread - 2021/22 PART IX

This is interesting. Is this comprehensive? Just picking through these, my thoughts are I think at the time the Kadri trade was considered to be a win, and even up until this year we could have probably said it was a wash (before Kadri went god mode this year). Barrie SUCKED here but no one saw that coming. I still give the trade an OK. Not amazing, but not a loss either. Marleau trade the resulting fiasco was bad though. Johnsson another wash - needed to clear cap, was bad last year, and after a hot start is bad again this year. Anderson is NHL-ready right now - could still be a win. I'd give that a wash too. Kappy trade we certainly didn't lose IMO - again he's gone completely cold after a hot start. If we managed to keep Rodrigues that trade would have looked even better.

Marchment, Hutton, Rittich, Foligno, Nash, Martin, even Leivo (though Leivo and Marchment were not getting minutes here), definitely losses. You also forgot Barabanov - we can add him to the losses list.

He's also supplemented this with some strong FA moves - Bunting, Mikheyev, Spezza, Kampf, Kase to name a few. Obviously we don't want to overlook the shitty ones - Ritchie, Amadio, Mrazek, Thornton, Lehtonen, Semyonov, etc.

Dubas is batting on the better side of 500 with his UFA signings.

I only looked for significant trades and missed Barabanov. If you want to look at the complete list:

Nice. Just subjectively assigning a letter grade to each one (ones that are a wash and don't cost us anything are C), looks like I think Dubas flat out loses one in about every 3 trades, and rates as D or lower in almost half. The only 2 As I had were the trade downs in 2020 to select Hirvonen and Niemela and 2018 to select Sandin and SDA lol.

You mean like Jarmo did a year ago for Foligno ??

With Muzz and Soup playing poorly, and Amirov's health up in the air, all of a sudden Kid Kyle's trade history not looking so good.

Kadri - loss
Marleau - loss
A.J - loss
Kappy -loss
Marchment - loss
Hutton - loss
Rittich - loss
Foligno - loss
Nash - loss
Ceci - loss because of Brown
Leivo - loss
Martin - loss

Soup - win
Muzzin - win
McCann - win oops
Ritchie - win but really a loss

-Ceci was to clear zaitsev cap hit - Win
-Marleau to repair a mistake by lou
Kappy - loss ??? Replace him by kase who probably doing a better job, save 2M of cap hit, add a 1st pick. How that trade could be a loss?!?!,!

Aj - cap dump

The context there is wild lol

We traded nothing for Riley Nash. We gave up a 4th for Hutton and he did well. Matt Martin was an easy W. Leivo is nothing and the trade was to give him a chance elsewhere.

So I guess Dubas lost the Foligno, Marchment and Rittich deals.

Which is funny because the usual Dubas complainers were the ones who were most happy we got Foligno lol

Almost like every GM has bad trades.

Cam dumps were made in order to free up space to overpay 16 and 34 and all except Marleau's are on Dubas.

I get the cap dumps but how can you call giving away Brown to dump Z a win ?? Call it even at best.

Could have retained 50% Marleau cap hit for 1 year and not given up a 1st but then you couldn't overpay Marner.

Kappy was a win when it was made but is a loss if Amirov never plays.

Kappy > Kase but would be nice if we could resign Kase and he can remain healthy. Kase was also not Kappy's replacement last year.

For every Kase, Bunting, Kampf, Bogo, Brodie, Ennis, Spezza, Simmonds?? there is a Vesey, Jumbo, Boyd, Mrazek, Gabriel, Ritchie, Agostino, Shore, Aberg. Most are a crap shoot.

How many of those trade was just a late pick traded for a depht player or to take a shot on an other young player?

Kind of pick you got like 5% of get a player who will play a day in the NHL and most of the time it will be a 4th line player.

If the Leafs are going to add help at the trade deadline, what would they have to give up? | The Star

Draft picks

The Leafs have first-, second- and seventh-round picks in the 2022 draft. That first-rounder is likely to be outside the top 20, which might make it easier for GM Kyle Dubas to deal than a top-10 pick. Dubas has said he is not afraid to trade picks, even if it didn’t work out so well last year.

Toronto acquired Nick Foligno from Columbus for the Leafs’ first-round pick last summer and a fourth-rounder this year. Foligno managed just five assists in 11 games with the Leafs, including one assist in the first-round playoff exit against Montreal. Columbus, meanwhile, used the Leafs’ first-rounder (25th overall) to acquire University of Wisconsin defenceman Corson Ceulemans, who looks like he will be an important part of the Blue Jackets blue line.

The Leafs, though, might be willing to include their first-rounder this year if it would help land a defenceman like Dallas’s John Klingberg, Arizona’s Jakob Chychrun or Anaheim’s Hampus Lindholm. And, while they only have three selections in this summer’s draft, they still have all but one of their picks in the 2023 and 2024 drafts.

The Leafs are in a win-now scenario. If they have to deal picks to achieve that, they can restock their prospect pool with U.S. college stars, undrafted players and international signings.

Other trade assets

The Leafs are currently weighing the performances of several defencemen — Justin Holl, Rasmus Sandin, Timothy Liljegren and Travis Dermott — and could include one in any trade package. Forward Ilya Mikheyev is in a contract year; he has shown his value to the team this season but his future cap could be too much for the organization. Pierre Engvall will be a restricted free agent after this season.

Outside the Leafs roster, Marlies Josh Ho-Sang and Alex Steeves could be of interest to other teams, as could prospects Matt Knies, Nick Abruzzese and Topi Niemelä. Still, the Leafs can’t deal every prospect they have for NHL help now.

Cap room

Toronto’s cap space at the deadline could be just under $4.5 million (U.S.), according to Cap Friendly. Much of that revolves around defenceman Jake Muzzin, sidelined by a second concussion, whose $5.6-million cap hit is hidden on long-term injured reserve. Will the Leafs keep a needed physical defender like Muzzin out of action until the playoffs to retain the cap space to add a significant piece?

The Leafs appear to be a top-five team in the East. An impact trade could help them take a run at the Cup. The best fits? Probably Chychrun or Lindholm on defence, Vancouver’s J.T. Miller at forward or Chicago’s Marc-André Fleury in goal.

I have a hard time justifying giving up a lot for players like Lindholm and Klingberg. People won't believe me, but they are not really upgrades to our lineup with how they have played over the last little bit. I like Lindholm to replace Muzzin but the price to acquire him won't really move the needle because you have to sit out someone like Liljegren or Sandin to fit him in probably, unless of course Muzzin is injured for the playoffs as well.

The only player you can justify giving up a 1st+ that would move the needle and really bolster the lineup would be JT Miller. We have a bit of a LW hole in the top 6 for a big time skilled player that gives more than just skill. It's not a big problem because Kerfoot is good and we have other options... but Miller would really give you another top line player to bolster everything else.

Yeah listing some of those trades as F's is reaching. Couple of those were to clean up the mess by Lou. The Kapanen trade was good then and still good today.
If you want losses of trades, look at the trading of Teows by Lou. Complete disaster.

Number 16 and 34, thats whats making this team an elite team...

In wich part of the game kapanen should be better? Same type of production, except last season. Hes not a better defensive player, he dont bring more physycality or grit....

Aj they had to clear his cap hit and just took the best offer they had, if they didnt get more that would give you an idea of whats his value was around the league.

Whats vesey, simmonds, agostino, shore, boyd cost? Absolutly nothing dubas just taking shot with some free agent who need to prove, something its working and something you get what you get. If you tey nothing, you get nothing

This isn't the playoffs thread. It's becoming increasingly worse. Please keep on topic or move on.

We get it. Everyone gets it. There are many other threads you can voice your concerns of previous seasons and how doomed the future is. I'd like to discuss free agents and trades here.

Feel free to browse the trade list and see for yourself. As I said - anything that was of little to no consequence I rated as a C as there was 1) no or negligible cost incurred 2) didn't result in anything significant. So things like Kurtis Gabriel for Chad Krys, James Greenway for future considerations, late round draft pick swaps, Hutchinson for Calle Rosen, Harpur for Salomaki, etc. It was just a fun exercise - would be interesting to see your results.

Always good to call a trade a loss because a prospect got diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Real good priorities there.

Some of you need to get a grip man. Embarrassing

Feel for the kid as a brain tumour is a bitch but give me a break if we call the Kappy trade a loss.

Apparently we had scouts at the Coyotes Avs game yesterday.
You’d have to think we’d have scouts watching the Yotes VERY closely. Let’s hope it isn’t just out of due diligence, but for serious interest in one or two of their players. As people might know by now, I’m all about Chychrun and Crouse.

As I mentioned - I do disagree with this. IMO the Kapanen trade was great. I mean Rodrigues, who we obviously couldn't convince to stay given where his place in the lineup would be, has 9 more points this season alone, and Amirov + Hallander were a good haul.

Garland is a pretty good player. Would be a good add to our team from a talent standpoint even tho he might not be the best fit size/physicality wise.

Wasnt there rumours last season that we were interested in aquiring him?

Yeah when you factor in Rodriguez it was a clear win at the time. Letting him walk and bad luck changes things some though IMO.

The Muzzin deal was also a clear win until now. No idea about the kid the Kings picked with our 1st but if they hit on that I bet Kings call it a win.

Doobler will deal a 1st at the deadline out of desperation, if allowed.

He feels the noose starting to tighten.

If he wants to get anybody of significance our first is most likely involved in the deal. Question is, what prospects also go? Guessing Robbie and a dman if the player comes with term.
