GDT: Trade and Free Agency Thread - 2021/22 PART IX

Dubas usually makes trades for good players, but he’s still struggling to actually build a cohesive and well rounded team.

Chemistry matters. Roles matter. Intangibles matter. Dubas needs to figure that part out.

At what point is it on the players? We are seeing the same problems that we had with Babcock (no, I don't like Babcock). Unfortunately, there is no trade that we win where we trade Nylander, Marner, Matthews, or JT.

Matthews is throwing his weight around more each year. I saw Marner actually hitting some players in the Washington game. I hope these players develop the "gritty" mindset that is lacking. But fundamentally, it's the on the players to adjust (assuming coaching is not the problem).

The problem with your thinking though is the word rumored. You can't go by what's said around this forum. I was told on the main boards that it would cost four 1sts/equivalent prospects plus a young roster player and not taking back any cap for Chychrun. And that Crouse would be a first and a young roster player. And we know how every guy the Leafs look at has double the value in the media. Both absolutely ridiculous asks. I agree if the actual price is ludicrous then let someone else have them.
I'm just going by the availible information regarding their trade values and what we would have to give up. If their price tags reflect their on ice value appropriately I have no problem with the leafs acquiring both. My main point this whole time though has been neither player is worth an over pay.

Oh, I just want to add ... I have no interest in a rental. Dubas might, but it doesn't sound like it.

Mt. Bridges Crouse only makes 1.533. Could likely fit his next contract into the line-up.
I think Jakob from Arizona tbh is a bait...Crouse I can see some merit to. I think we can work something with him IMO.

If we are looking at the Nucks, obviously we would want to have JT Miller, but I wouldn't be surprised if somehow some way we are looking at Hoglander...just feels like a Dubas Move.

The trade boards are always...and i mean this very much not generously....always...over exaggerated and exaggerating the values of people. I still remember how pissed and crazy people were about this one second round NYR player....because their prospect cupboard was pretty bare lmao.

So if Muzzin is hurt... money for lw and d

If Muzzin is in... still another D?

Goalies aren't changing

I can only assume he's thinking here that he wants to send a message of support and confidence in the in hopes they (the goalies) turn it around and don't shitcan our season. They've been awful this year.

You aren’t likely going to win those trades on paper, but what really matters is on the ice.

As I said in my above post, chemistry, roles, and intangibles matter. It’s possible to get worse players and still improve the team.

Matthews is throwing his weight around more each year. I saw Marner actually hitting some players in the Washington game. I hope these players develop the "gritty" mindset that is lacking. But fundamentally, it's the on the players to adjust (assuming coaching is not the problem).

Just because the players are at fault too doesn’t mean Dubas isn’t.

except they are needlessly burning cap by calling up all these players. If they really weren’t planning on keeping him out then you put muzz on the IR.

Still have 7 D. If it’s true that they actually plan to play him then they are being really dumb

He is on LTIR right now. We are not accruing any more cap as it is, so it literally doesn't matter who we call up (other than getting these guys on two-way deals some extra cash).

Nice. Just subjectively assigning a letter grade to each one (ones that are a wash and don't cost us anything are C), looks like I think Dubas flat out loses one in about every 3 trades, and rates as D or lower in almost half. The only 2 As I had were the trade downs in 2020 to select Hirvonen and Niemela and 2018 to select Sandin and SDA lol.

So 7 trades get a grade better than C+ and 40 worse than B-.

to name a few, Kyle Clifford for future considerations, Barabanov for Anti Suomela, Ben Hutton for a 5th, Rittich for a 3rd, Foligno trade, Riley Nash for a 7th, Marchment for Malgin, Dakota Joshua for nothing, the Marleau trade, etc.

Edit: and to clarify, if we spent an asset (draft pick) and got nothing back (Baptiste, Rittich, Hutton, etc) I considered that F worthy.

Exactly. They chose to put him on LTIR.

they didn’t have to. They could have put him on ir and accrued cap. They had 7 d with muzz hurt.

they could have held him on ir. Kept banking cap and then put him on if someone else got hurt retroactively

The move screams hold out to playoffs

So if Muzzin is hurt... money for lw and d

If Muzzin is in... still another D?

It's pretty obvious they are looking at different options on defense. They are trying Liljegren on the first pairing, they tried Sandin there, they are trying Brodie on LD, trying Dermott and Holl with different players as well. So now it's taking those notes and figuring out if there are better options. I don't think they care if that player is RD or LD, as long as they are a pretty big upgrade, and then you juggle the pairings based on the player. For my money, Dermott is the odd man out with Holl probably sticking around because of his skillset. I prefer Dermott over Holl personally... but I just don't think the Leafs do.

Friedman and Johnston have said the Leafs want defence primarly. I think we'll see it.

I think the Leafs will get linked to Lindholm, Klingberg and Braun over the next few weeks.

This isn't the playoffs thread. It's becoming increasingly worse. Please keep on topic or move on.

We get it. Everyone gets it. There are many other threads you can voice your concerns of previous seasons and how doomed the future is. I'd like to discuss free agents and trades here.
YOU KNOW IVE BEEN SEEING THIS SINCE 19..

I am joking I am sorry I just can't help it.

What do you guys prefer Lindholm or Klingberg?

That's a tough one... Lindholm is a little more defensively responsible and has better track record of being able to play tough minutes well... I think?
Personally would go for Lindholm myself, I think he's a bit more of a calming presence than that of Klingberg. Iirc I think lindholm is like 23 to 24 minute average atm.

Yeah except those trades don't mean much. The Marleau trade was bad but again it was to clean up 2 time GM of the year mistakes. What were you actually expecting to get for Barabanov, Joshua? If those are F trades, then everytime any GM makes a trades for future considerations, it's F for them. You might need to rethink your evaluation on those trades. The only F's I see which clearly were bad was Marchment, Foligno, and Marleau.

It's like calling Lou trading those 4 or 5 prospects for Grabner an F when it isn't. Are we now calling that trade an F for Lou considering how good Verhargae has become? I call those the C's where it's small trades and don't mean much. Now if those picks end up being good for those teams, then sure but you can't say that now.
