Klingberg has not been very good for the past few seasons. His offense has fallen off a bit and he is an absolute tire fire in the defensive zone. You may call it the Rick Bowness effect, but are you willing to gamble on him turning his game around?
Let's say we're interested:
-Not breaking up Rielly - Brodie
-You can't trust Klingberg on the second pair against tough competition
-You're not overpaying him to play on the 3rd pair. Plus, you'd rather have the kids continue to develop and frankly, probably be better than Klingberg
I'm just not seeing a fit
I'm okay with breaking up Rielly-Brodie in certain scenarios...the Leafs acquire Mayfield...
Muzzin-Brodie would be up for battling top competition and Mayfield joins Rielly but would play more of a Hainsey type role in just sitting back.
Your rationale makes sense too though...Rielly-Klingberg would be too bad defensively together & Klingberg would get murdered against top competition. Paying premier assets etc for a rental for 3rd pairing isn't smart...go for the used Honda of rentals rather than the Cadillac in Justin Braun for that kinda thing.
