East Metro, soon to be Up North.
Gaudreau is another Rask, he’s a warm body being propped up by great wingers. He just isn’t criticized as heavily because he doesn’t get paid $4M. If he produces similarly this season as last season, I’ll be happy though. He is a righty and can win face offs (still want Rossi taking all faceoffs — we need him to develop as a center).
Freddie is a damn good hockey player and would not be on the team if he wasn't. He was propped up by nobody. Pretty sure his wingers would agree.

He’s not a 2nd liner. Everyone in the NHL is a good hockey player.

Gaudreau had half the amount of points as Fiala and Boldy almost caught up to him in 30 less games. So yes, he absolutely was propped up by better wingers.

I mean, if you’re looking solely at points, sure. He was definitely the defensive focal point of that line.

He was absolutely propped up by Fiala and Boldy combination, he is 29 years old and scored 44 of his career 62 nhl points with the two of them. I think he did a great job last year but wow there are piles of centers who could have thrived in that spot.

Anyone think that Florida is desperate to shed salary and in need of defense?

Dumba with 50% retained and Jost for Hornqvist, Gudkos and Mackie?

Why is Minnesota doing this?
I can see the logic behind it if we’re moving on from Dumba. We remain competitive this season with Gudas and Hornqvist as one year rentals and get Samoskevich for the future (if the team sucks this year, you flip them at the TDL).

Would like to see what Jost can do in an elevated role though.

Biggest issue is I don't think there is enough salary coming back to Minnesota for Florida to move.

I understand that to a degree, but the deal feels more like someone wanted Samoskevich and just scraped together a deal around him, rather than actually trying to do anything for either team.

Not saying he is Rask, but he’s playing a similar role to him. He’s a hell of a bargain at $1.2M, but I think he’s a 4th line player on a good team.

Since we already have the GREEF line, I don’t think a defensive-minded forward is who we need playing with Rossi and Boldy. I trust both of those players on both ends of the ice more than Dewar and Duhaime. Since it doesn’t seem like we’re adding any additional forward support, I’d rather see what Jost can do with Boldy/Rossi.
One, Fred can win a faceoff, best on the team.
Two, 40+ points is about as good as a Wild 2nd liner ever does, especially when they aren't power play regulars.
Three, Wild ARE a good team.

Are the Wild done for the off-season?

They have some small space to add. Would have loved to see a Strome-like deal.

I still think that they have to move Kulikov... I am fine if they go into the season with the roster as is, assuming that Addison, and one or two(depending on Greenway's health) of Shaw/Rossi/Chaffee is up.

I just can't see demoting Hartman after the season he had last year, or even Gaudreau, unless we get a C like Dubois or Miller(which isn't happening).

With Merril expected out, they will keep Kulikov at least until he is back, and why not play him the first however many games, contract year for him and his value is at the lowest from his playoff underperformance. There are always teams off to a slow start looking for a shakeup, depth D man is often that initial play where we could actually get some kind of beneficial trade if the organization feels that they need to move him. Otherwise, he played really well for the first half last season, he is competent enough to make plays with most of our lines. I don't know if fatigue or nerves set in, but he did fall apart a bit so understand the sentiment to move on, but there is still some good play in him and he will be motivated to get another contract somewhere. He makes for pretty good injury insurance on a team that is likely to see some D missing time this season.

I think we are likely done for now in terms of UFA, but the scouts will be put to work on watching for possible waiver pickups as the season approaches. We saw some acceptable talent come from their last year, this year could see a few more opportunities arise as there are a lot constrained teams right now. There may be some found gold available there, but the remaining UFA class is just a combination of too expensive or just plain bad IMO.

Keep that bottom line spot an open target for the young guys and give them a motivated summer into a battling camp.

How about Kulikov for Toews (max retention) and a 2nd?

Let Toews play between Kap and Zucc for a year. Let Hartman and Gudreau play up and down the lineup. I realize Toews is likely toast but just him winning face offs in the ozone probably puts him in a more valuable light that Hartman there.
