They traded for Weber because they dumped Dadonov in the deal. Weber can go on LTIR where his cap hit doesn't count against the team, but it does not give them extra spending room beyond what they cleared from moving Dadonov, who wouldn't be able to get buried on LTIR. They still only have the 82.5M to spend on their active roster.
Better read that again and look up how Tampa was able to put Kucherov on LTIR all season to get under the cap. They are allowed to replace that money in the cap, it is a loop hole that many rich teams use to go over the cap.

Look the stories about why they traded for Weber or how Vegas is going to make the cap. There is already more talk about trading for more LTIR players

I don't think I'm the one that needs to re-learn how LTIR works here, to be honest.

So I guess the next big question with this team is what happens with Dumba, and there are probably two ways that could go:

1.) They work out an extension this summer, probably similar to the contract he's already on. If Addison and Faber both turn into full time NHLers in the next few years this would leave us overloaded at RD, but after 2023-24 Spurgeon's NMC shifts to a modified NTC, so moving him out becomes an option.

2.) They go into next season with Dumba on the roster but without a contract, with the option to move him at the trade deadline. I think this would probably be Plan B, but it's definitely on the table if Dumba wants more than they're willing to give him.

Technically they could try to trade him this summer, but he's unlikely to return more than he would at the deadline anyway. And Guerin doesn't seem like the type to worry about having him walk in UFA for nothing.

Either way, I'd think this question's largely answered by August.
I would like to see him traded myself. If they give him an extension anything over 4 mill AAV is too much for me. He doesn’t have his shot anymore, injured all the time and average at best in his own zone.

If you have a team cap hit of 81.5M (cap ceiling) and you acquire a player with a 5M cap hit, you can go over the cap to 86.5M. However, that player counts for 5M against the cap so you reall gain nothing. When it makes sense is when you offload a player on your team for a player you can put on LTIR. Look at the Dadanov for Weber trade. They freed up Dadanov’s cap hip, not weber’s cap hit.

The team is taking a step back so I see no rush to sign Dumba. You go into the year and see how things play out with the patchwork roster. If the team is trending the wrong direction you unload the likes of Dumba and other parts towards the trade deadline for pieces and improve overall draft position.

They lost a piece they are not going to replicate to maintain their top 5 scoring and they’re not realistic moves away up the middle and in net from offsetting that so I think the right play is to go into the year as an evaluation knowing you have your prospect core coming. If they catch lightning that they have the last two years with continued career years from much of the roster, you can look at what a Dumba extension looks like.

Late July into mid August is a pretty standard signing window for established RFAs. A lot contracts get done around the same time/after as the arbitration dates. So that window got pushed back and negations stated over from scratch.

Fiala not getting the $7m x 7 (IIRC) he wanted and only got a lowball 1 year deal last offseason was beginning of the end for Fiala in MN.

I’m likely losing track of podcasts but fairly certain it was either on the Marek or Russo podcast that Fiala was offered a 3yr deal at over $6m this past offseason and he turned it down so the Wild elected club arb. Sure, may not be accurate and may not make loads of sense for Fiala beyond being at sound number for what he’s proven at that time in addition to hitting the UFA market at a prime age. But if true, it’s not nothing.

Was russo, Fiala turned away 3 x 6m+ according to russo and Sturm turned down 5 x 2.5m in one of Russos podcasts today.

Sturm may well regret turning that down. His play in Colorado doesn't look much like he's going to get that much per yr.

He does get his name on the Cup, so there is that.

I just get the feeling that players really don't want to play in MN anymore. I'm really curious if MAF and D-Lo re-sign or they run for the hills like Cole and Bonino did. These are all guys GMBG traded for and wanted to re-sign.

I'm meh on D-Lo and Bonino. Losing Cole hurt. Not getting MAF back for another season hurts the team.

Any interest in Puljujarvi? Slot him in the Fiala spot with Rossi/Boldy?

Prob wouldn’t take much more than our 2nd+B level prospect

He got a Cup and he may not want to be more than a third/fourth liner. If you had the chance to be traded to a cup contender would you?
Man, a guaranteed $12.5 million or a Cup? I won't lie, I'd have a tough time deciding which one to pick. The good news is that maybe he has some of that "Cup Winner" prestige to him, now. That tends to be worth some money to some GMs.

Honestly, Sturm may not have liked his situation here in Minnesota. Guerin seems to have his favorites and if you aren't in his circle then you are out.

Let's return to the Wild. What about our goaltending?
Looks like Fleury is gone, otherwise I guess he'd sign by now. And Talbot's getting tired, this is another big issue.

I'm not sure about Middleton either, what is he waiting for if he wants to stay here?

If we trade Zucc to the ducks would could acquire Gibson with his money.
