Reminds me of when Lou would trade a 2nd for Plek or Boyle... except worse because Ottawa f***ing sucks. I guess if you waste 2nd rounders on guys like Klevin, you might as well trade for a washed up 2nd line C.
Thats actually similar to Lou. Make a questionable draft pick and get rid of a 2nd in a bad deal. This is the last thing Ottawa should have done.

Looking forward to Noodles now saying Sens centre depth is on par with us now though lol

Gauthier is probably liking his chances of earning a contract now.

Or maybe Arizona will add a guy like Brassard to play on their 3rd line.
Funny enough, Gauthier like depth pieces is what Ottawa should have done.

They will for sure talk about the Sens center depth now.

Hell I was watching the NHL network yesterday and two seperate guys made the point that the emergence of Suzuki and Kotkaniemi will be one of the main reasons the Habs will win the division... In a division with McDavid/ Matthews/ Draisaitl/ Tavares/ Pettersson/ Scheifele/ Monahan etc..

I think they have young guys which make sense for their 4C (Brown, Chlapik, etc.). I guess Ottawa wanted a guy who could be a 2C/3C in case Stutzle is not ready, Haula and Soderberg were not interested, and Brassard is not really good enough (although he is far cheaper and costs no assets) and may not be interested either. Although I doubt Brassard really has the complete luxury of choosing his spot, and he is not going to be making huge money no matter where he goes.

Right now Arizona has John Hayden, who should not be a center, and should probably be a 13th forward at best right now. Gauthier is a better 4C by a fair margin. They could have also gone with Brassard to split 3C duties with Hayton and then put Larsson at 4C, but that is up to them (and the players of course).

Who do they even play at center now? Dvorak and Schmaltz will have to for sure. Stephan/Soderberg/Richardson are all gone. Flip Keller there maybe? Gauthier could actually see some decent playing time there.

Ottawa probably did have a second round pick to use as trade currency. I'd likely peg CBJ to be better next season in comparison to OTT and SJ too. It doesn't seem like the best trade idea if Stepan is one-season-and-done with Ottawa though.

Keller is not a center.

They signed Johan Larsson. He is likely 3C and splits with Barrett Hayton. Then it is John Hayden, who is also not a center and is worse than Gauthier even if he was. Hayden should definitely not be in a top 12, and the rest of their center depth is not good enough to play 4C, so I imagine Arizona signs Gauthier to play 4C for them. It could be a nice opportunity for him to earn some legit playing time, and ARI would get good value out of him at 4C.

They probably feel like they can recoup more value out of him at the TDL and get a good vet center in the meantime. May be a worthwhile bet if they put him at 2C around some good talent (i.e. Stutzle). Should definitely do better than he did last year.

Worst case they don't really need another mid-2nd and Stepan has a ton of NHL experience to share with Stutzle while he learns center. Stutzle can start on the wing now. ARI is probably happy they shed that money without retention though, and get a valuable pick they desperately need.

Has McLennan really said similar comments like that about Ottawa during the offseason? Although it wouldn't surprise me because he once said how Toronto barely made the playoffs in 2017 and failed to acknowledge that Boston also just barley made the playoffs that same year, along with the fact they had the same amount of points as Toronto.

Stepan gives the Sens some respectable centre depth, and should blend well with Smith's system.

Surprised that Arizona was able to get a 2nd back though. But the Sens had three 1sts, and three 2nds this past draft and have three 2nd's again in the 2021 draft. So giving one up isn't going to tank their future. Doesn't justify giving up bad value but it's not the worst move for a top 9 centre.

Soderberg getting $1 mill and Haula getting $1.75 mill for 1 year each are nice gambles.

I realize they were probably holding out for better offers but those wouldn't have been bad depth options for the Leafs.

Oh well.

Cap space would have allowed the Leafs to load up with these cheap, quality players giving them the depth they lack. Could have been the difference between a first round exit and a deep playoff run. Oh well.

I would have taken Haula over Vesey + Boyd.

At the same time that means Dubas would have had to sit around and wait until now to sign these players. In terms of risking the org depth I get it. Also those players would have wanted to play here too. Perhaps they were waiting to see what happened with this season before deciding on where to play.

We should ignore any comment he says about the Leafs.

The main thing that would have a difference in a deep playoff run is getting Keefe from the start, and Freddy performing to expectation. Not too mention the 2 drafts Lou messed up on which we could have got some players, but I am excited about this years team.

They're getting him from the start of the season at least. Bonus for them if he can return a 2nd or better around the trade deadline. Not a bad move for Ottawa. A 2M payout with a 6.5M cap hit doesn't hurt either.

Even though it's a PTO hopefully Craig Anderson signs with the Capitals as their #2 Goalie and they won't need to claim Aaron Dell of waivers, so he can remain the Leafs #3 Goalie.

They are not the only team to worry about, but that would help.
