Ottawa made another trade:

Coburn, Paquette and a 2nd for Gaborik and Nilsson. No idea what Tampa is thinking with this.

Soderberg getting $1 mill and Haula getting $1.75 mill for 1 year each are nice gambles.

I realize they were probably holding out for better offers but those wouldn't have been bad depth options for the Leafs.

Oh well.

I would have taken Soderberg over Vesey I think, but at the time it was likely very different to sign Soderberg.

Those are pretty good deals for those players.

Cap space. Gaborik and Nilsson go on LTIR to go above the cap by like 7M or whatever. Coburn and Paquette is ~3M gone.

Does Coburn's $1.7 million AAV help Tampa's salary cap with him now playing for Ottawa?

Well they don't really need to clear salary anymore I don't think. Unless they are getting Vatanen, which is the likely scenario now I guess. They lack RD and Vatanen is a major upgrade on Schenn, Rutta, and Coburn. I don't think Hamonic wants to go to Tampa, but he would be an option too.

Paquette was good and had positive value, but could be replaced internally by Stephens or maybe they sign a UFA like Brassard. Vatanen will probably make something like 2.5 mill, so replacing Paquette with Stephens/Brassard opens up enough money to upgrade Coburn with Vatanen.

I would say Paquette + 2nd is pricey to dump Coburn though, so they are really paying a decent price to get a guy like Vatanen in the lineup.

I would have taken Haula over Vesey + Boyd.

At the same time that means Dubas would have had to sit around and wait until now to sign these players. In terms of risking the org depth I get it. Also those players would have wanted to play here too. Perhaps they were waiting to see what happened with this season before deciding on where to play.

Honestly, Haula hasn't been all that great outside of that first season he played for the Knights.

I would have been fine with him on the Leafs on a cheap deal l, but sont think there will be much of a production gap between him and the Leafs depth guys

I hope so. Hes getting to the age that he should start showing he can be a stable top four guy, if he's ever getting there.

Hes shown some very promising signs, just need to him to be consistent and capable of taking on more difficult icetime

I like to think he will start showing better than he has, which really has not been bad at all. As a 3rd pairing D he's done well in that role. He's now played just over 150 games (155?). Even though he's been a staple on our 3rd pair, he's never been offered a chance to play with a quality partner (sort of a Rielly lite, if you will) which has stifled his development and imo caused him to be overly anxious towards accomplishing too much, again a bit like Rielly. He's a very good skater, strong, he possesses many qualities which should lead to success. He seems willing to try the right side, if only we had an accomplished vet, stable, defensively sound, who plays the left side who could tutor the young fella towards greater success. Oh, hold on...

Rielly Brodin
Muzzin Dermott
Lehtonen Holl/Bogosian

I guess I'm hoping that Dermott takes a leap forward in the same way Brodin did with Calgary a number of years back. I see some similarities between the two.
