My guess is if Helly would take 5 years at 8 he would be gone already
It'll be interesting to see if the market for Helle is stronger from the "one-year" teams, vs those that might extend him. Same for Scheifele.

Regardless, the Jets have received outstanding value from both players over an extended time period. Trade returns will be added value.

I am also fine with holding on to both of them and evaluating at the deadline but it seems likely they both move before then

If the return is right, why not retain on helle?

Vezina calibre goalie at 3M, you should almost be able to name your price for teams against the cap and their window closing

Think of teams against the wall that would want them.
Yup.

I think Chevy will have a bunch of teams that have varying needs and cap situations, including contenders that would want them for a year but needing retention (e.g. Bruins for Scheifele).

Chevy probably has some flexibility to retain, but needs to see what happens with Wheeler's cap space, too.

Because it might interfere on free agency with respect to the Cap

Yeah, I do kind of feel like Hellebuyck needs to be decided on by July 1.

We are definitely in need of a back-up goalie, which I expect them to handle on July 1. The question is: are you getting a league minimum backup for 15-20 starts to play behind Hellebuyck, or a "1A" backup who can handle 30-35 starts to platoon with his replacement?
Based on every other year, I’m going to bet on getting the worst backup goalie in the league that no one else signs.

Right now we're showing 9M of space with 9F, 6D and 1G signed

Big RFAs to sign are Vilardi and Samberg.

Moving helle out at 50% gives us another 3M and buying wheeler out gives us another 5.5M. So 17.5M sign 5F (including Vilardi, Stenlund, Kupari and Barron) and 2 G

The reality is that aside from finding 2 UFA goalies (if one doesn't come back in the Helle deal), our roster is basically set and I don't see room for a big UFA signing even if someone like O'Reilly wants to come here

Cap won't be an issue next year

Here are the available goalies (age) and their SV% on their last ~3000 regular season shots against:

UFAs
Korpisalo (29) .902
Hill (27) .910
Varlamov (35) .917 *
Raanta (34) .913
Jarry (28) .915 *
Stalock (35) .907
Andersen (33) .911
Halak (38) .913
Rittich (30) .902
Brossoit (30) .908
Lyon (30) .904

On the market
Hart (24) .906 *
Swayman (24) .920
Thompson (26) .915
Hellebuyck (30) .915 *

The * indicates a starter over the course of their last 3000 shots against. E.g. Hellebuyck's faced 4119 shots in the last two regular seasons alone; Lyon has faced 1058 over his entire NHL career (6 seasons). Swayman and Thompson have a SA sample < 3000.

So really 4 starters available, and Varlamov is getting up there in age and hasn't really been a starter for the last 2 seasons.

Jarry will be a smart signing for someone...

As long as retaining a bit on Hellebucyk and Scheifele (which seems bizarre on the surface obviously for their contracts, but cap space is scarce across the league) doesn't affect any other moves we might want to make, I think it would be in the Jets best interest to do it if it facilitates a good deal.

Doing it early gives the Jets the cap space available of their own to make subsequent moves, and you want to be able to strike when something is available, and not at the end of August when the dust has almost already all settled.
