Because they went the "new hip 21st century" analytics wunderkind (lol hes not) route theyll overcompensate based on how bad it went and get some ole timer like Lou/Burke etc.

Maybe Hextall polar opposite to Dubas. Actually played hockey, respected by the players, doesnt care if people think hes smart or not.

All may be true, but this is the world of sports where every other team has this thing called accountability. For all the moves he's made, all the assets he's given up Dubas' really solid regular season team has won one playoff round. That's a huge failure.

Any other pro franchise in any other sport and Dubas probably doesn't last this long. Great future for him, fine, but you can't reward failure by extending his contract. Time to give someone else a crack at running it (and given the Leafs' luck almost certainly watch Dubas go and win a Cup in 3-5 years with another team, likely a Canadian one).

Now if you're in the boat that Dubas has too much promise to let go, then MLSE/Shanny have to make it clear major changes are mandatory. That includes replacing Keefe and breaking up the core. I could probably buy into that - for the failure this organization has become, anything less than holding big names accountable should be acceptable.
The past doesn't matter at all at this point. Sure mistakes were made. But the only thing you should consider are the next five years. Dubas is a much better GM now than at any point in his career. He is a hard working smart guy who will likely only get better. I don't see anyone better suited to run this team moving forward. Hiring a new guy just gives the new guy five years of new excuses. Dubas feels the pressure to get it done now.

Be careful what (many of you) wish for. I have seen a lot of bad mgmt in my over 40 years. Dubas will do great things. I just hope its in Toronto.

If Leafs want to have any sustained success they should just hire me ;)

On a serious note:

Barry Trotz

Trotz has said he wants to manage a team in a GM capacity. Probably Trotz being GM/Coach may be better especially if we want to win

LMAO
I thinks he's taking over as GM in Nashville. I also think he prefers living in the states for family reasons.

I love Brock it's an ok school but it's not like he's an Astro physicist

Toronto Maple Leafs fans are not sure who the general manager will be next season.

Current Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas is in the final year of his contract and is a lame duck situation.

Kyle Dubas’ future with the Leafs may already be decided for all anyone knows, though some insist that it will come down to how well the team performs in the 2023 NHL playoffs.

Another first-round exit would likely end his tenure as Toronto’s GM, however, its going to depend on how the team performs overall.

Dubas has spent the past few seasons putting together a talented Toronto team, only to see it fail in the playoffs. This season, more than others, there is a lot at stake for Dubas and his team.

If this is indeed Dubas’ last season as the GM in Toronto, it may also be Shanahan’s.

Here are a few options the Leafs could explore, if necessary.

Toronto Maple Leafs Future GM Options

There will be no shortage of possibilities for Shanahan when selecting the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It is a pretty coveted job within the NHL. So, when the time comes to hire a new GM, who will he choose?

Brandon Pridham

Brandon Pridham is the current Assistant GM to Kyle Dubas and the wizard behind Toronto’s salary cap. His knowledge of Toronto’s salary cap future and the players makes him a great candidate. The big question will be whether or not he stays with the team or decides to follow Dubas to Dubas’ next landing spot. If he stays, he’s at the top of the list for Dubas’s replacement.

Ryan Hardy

Ryan Hardy is the current general manager of the Toronto Marlies and is an assistant GM to Kyle Dubas. Hardy has held the position of Marlies GM since June 25th, 2021. He has a good working knowledge of Toronto’s prospects and what this team needs moving forward.

Doug Gilmour

Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Doug Gilmour is a fan favourite in Toronto. He was a very hard-working player and knows what it takes to win. From 2011 to 2017, Gilmour was the GM of the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL. He acted as team president for Kingston from 2017 to 2019 before leaving the team to join the Toronto Maple Leafs as a community representative. There is no telling how well Gilmour would do as the GM in Toronto, but he would be starting with a talented roster.

Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser

Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser is currently an assistant GM with the Toronto Maple Leafs in charge of player development. She knows a thing or two about winning. As a member of Canada’s women’s hockey team, Wickenheiser won four Olympic gold medals and one Olympic silver medal.

She also helped Team Canada win seven gold medals at the World Championships, along with six silver medals. Her role in player development would be an asset if Shanahan decides it’s time for her to be promoted.
If thats the pool they have I would sooner have Dubas back. No more learn on the job candidates except maybe the kid from Carolina who is coming from an organization that does more with less every year. If they move on from Kyle they are better off bringing in a fresh perspective.

Eric Tulsky from Carolina
I like what they’ve done in Carolina and I like the way they play. Sounds good to me if we can instil a blue collar philosophy.

I really don’t want anyone who has been involved with Dubas and may share the same thoughts of rolling it back with the core. Basically agreeing to do the same thing we’ve been doing.

I agree, a totally outside perspective, not someone already in the organization.

Its tampering if you talk to a player under contract to another team and subject to fines and penalties.

However is that also true for management that is under contract to another team?
Leafs paid a 3rd in compensation for signing each of Lou and Babcock who were both under contract to the Wings and Devils still.

They had to ask for permission first, so I assume the tampering rules apply the same to all employees under contract even if they are "fired".

This playoffs might cost him a hefty hefty raise. Wonder if teams will notice that this team was progressing each year until Dubas took over. Once Dubas took over the team completely lost it's identity and was entirely undisciplined. Wear whatever you want, say whatever you want to the media, turn the puck over as much want.. Play to your god given taken. Glad it's over. Shanahan handed the keys to rookes and they ran it like rookies. If Dubas gets a job elsewhere, he certainly won't be getting free reign like he did here and he certainly won't be getting Keefe or be allowed to hire a rookie coach.

Hire a kid from MIT to lead your Annaylitics
Let him run it .
Get a GM that's a gunslinger that can make trades
These guys aren't afraid of being moved with dubas in charge
Maybe get advice outside the organization
Use all the brainpower from Dr Haley to Spezza
Find a guy who can make big deals
Then throw mathews at Anaheim

Well, hockey isn't astrophysics so you don't need the flashiest of degrees to be a great hockey executive. The criticism I have of younger Dubas is he was trying to reinvent the way things are done in the management of a hockey team before having learned to do it well.

There is so much shit to do. I doubt they clean house just for that reason.

7 Free agents.
Dubas contract expiring.
Fire Keefe?
Hire new coach?
Hire new GM?
New president?
Mathew’s contract? Sign long term?
NMC kicking Jul 1.
Draft?
Free agency?
What’s the vision or philosophy moving forward?

Too much all that once. For that reason I think they will run it back.
