Krug is a hell of a player.

I'm not going to deny that he is a hell of a player...on offense. Like a better, older Dunn. But he has Dunn's weaknesses as well, and we just gave him a seven-year-deal.

I'm not a fan of the move. I'll support Krug, like I support all of the Blues, but I still think that we did not make the right call.

Krug is a hell of a player.

He's a significant downgrade on Pietrangelo. Being good is fine, but he's not great, and he's making a lot of money for a long time that could have been used for an actual elite player.

Basically, generally speaking, teams don't win Cups without elite talent. And with Tarasenko possibly finished as a top level player and Pietro gone, we have one, maybe 2 if you wanna stretch Parayko into that tier.

It's understandable to be upset when your GM intentionally closes your Cup window prematurely

Intentionally? Let’s see what Petro gets. 66M over 8 isn’t a terrible place to land. Year 8 we would have been lucky to have any positive value. The benefit of that 8th year is to dilute the AAV for the years you hope to contend.

Given this year, and the uncertainty of gate revenue for the next year or 2, I think 8.25 AAV coupled with a 8th year is fair. Petro definitely disagreed, and he may be proven right, but at this point signing the clear second best option at 6.5 AAV pretty clearly proves nobody is “intentionally” closing any windows, and with respect it proves to me at least you are reacting emotionally in this moment, which I can certainly understand.

what if we did nothing and let Petro walk? Then what? This was a great move

Then we have cap room and can sign Krug anyway since Krug was probably gonna sign with whichever team didn't get Pietrangelo anyway.

I didn't see anyone force him to give 7 year extensions to Faulk and Krug. If it's revealed that he was forced at gun point to do so, I will of course immediately apologize to him.

So it's either intentionally closing the window or gross incompetence. Take your pick.

So...what, then?

Krug-Parayko
Scandella-Faulk
Gunnarsson/Dunn-Bortuzzo

Ouch.

That defense isn't going to hold up against the best in the West, and it could be downright ugly if the forwards play as poorly defensively as they did this last go-around. Hope Binnington finds the magic, because he has his work cut out for him.

Honestly, I'd have tried out Mikkola on a bottom pairing, re-up Dunn to play with Parayko, and sign, maybe, Koekkoek or someone like that to back up Bortuzzo on the bottom pairing. Scandella and Faulk would be paired with each other. It's not signing Krug, but our window is on the verge of closing as it is, if not outright shut. Krug signing or not signing doesn't change that.

A great move? We'll see. Krug's a left-handed shot, and we'll likely lose Dunn as a result of this contract. If we trade Dunn for a first or a top right winger, that's fine, but I don't think we'll get close to that much.

I can't disagree with this reasoning in general, but O'Reilly is better at his job than Parayko is at his. If you think it's possible to stretch Parayko to elite, O'Reilly is already there.

Holy Hell

Watch the DA virtual meeting.

It sounds like Petro wanted to test free agency and DA made a very good offer.

They departed without the door fully closed, but damn near closed.

DA knows far more than any of us. This team is MORE than one single player. He's not a fool.
Think Armstrong jerking him around has anything to do with Pietrangelo's current state of mind?

Because Pietrangelo sure wasn't looking to test free agency a year and a half ago...

I get the argument with Faulk. I don’t get how anything handled this offseason applies. Krug isn’t Petro, but 45.5M isn’t 66M either. If it couldn’t get done by now, waiting longer, when there is no obvious Plan C available, seems risky. If we’re intentionally closing our window, we’re not putting 45.5M to Krug. 7 years deals aren’t about the current window. They are about the back end pain. We’ve shown with these long term deals you mention, plus Schenn, we aren’t focused on how bad it’s going to get in 5-7 years. I believe Petro got a fair deal too, and it might not be as bad on the back end as the other 3, but it won’t be great.

Bottom line, none of these actions signal a GM or organization that “intentionally” closed a window. It signals a failing, and now failed, negotiation.

You guys got a hell of a player. Former Blues STH, I know you’ll embrace him from day 1. He’s the style you love..100% heart.

Don’t sleep on his all around game. Is he a guy you’ll put out with a 1 goal lead with 1 minute left? Probably not...but he’s not the PP specialist some try and make him out to be. Torey’s a hell of a player. You got a great one

Gross incompetence when you don't even know what was offered? I'm guessing you're just venting.

He traded multiple solid assets for Justin Faulk and gave him 7 years and 6.5 million, and priced himself out on his teams franchise player.

Is he a fool? He's made too many good moves for me to say that myself. But he's sure doing his Jim Rutherford post Penguins winning the Cup thing right now.

I don't want to take away from Krug, who I actually like, so pardon the argument we've got going on. Just a.... frustrating day.

I was saying we had one, and maybe you can argue two if you are high enough on Parayko. O'Reilly is the 1.

We weren’t priced out of Petro. Faulk has nothing to do with Petro. Army drew the line and Petro didn’t budge.

Of course I'm venting. We just let an elite defenseman walk so we could overpay another Vince Dunn. Then we have fans lapping it up like it's a great move. Hell there was one guy who legit said thank you DA for not letting us be the next Chicago as if Chicago didn't get 3 cups in 6 years precisely because they ponied up for their stars.

Lord I wish we could be Chicago. Would gladly trade take the couple of down years they've had in return for multiple Cups and Pietrangelo and maybe a couple other numbers hanging in the rafters.

It 100% has to do with Petro. And if he came to the conclusion that he could offer Faulk, a non top 50 defender in hockey, 7 years and 6.5 million per, but wouldn't budge on 8x8.5 for a top 5 defender in hockey, he needs to be fired.

f***ing THIS! Chicago paid there top players and they won f***ing cups. Same with LA. You take a few bad years to extend your window as a top team as long as possible. We did the opposite.

I agree 1000%.

Some of you guys may be happy now but you are going to be changing your tune quickly.
