David had significant back issues that got far worse once signing with the Leafs. I worked with David's father for 8 years as he conducted a lot of the training where we worked. He'd have been a fine player for the leafs without those injuries.
He had a statistical blip year. You don’t give term and dollars based on that, you pick one and have the player prove their worth. There was zero shock in how it went. Even if not injured, the likelihood of replicating the blip was smaller than the likelihood of not.

What a lesson for some borderline NHL guys battling it out in the AHL.

At 25....this guy probably never thought he would sign a 68 million dollar deal. He was riding the bus in the AHL praying for an opportunity.

No matter what happens for this guy moving forward and for the Leafs.....he has shown that you should never give up on yourself.

The one who is about to be 36? You realize half this thread is making fun of signing a 30 year old right? 36 and not what he was.
Obviously not what he was, but still good enough to put up some points on the PP. More responding to the idea that TB is sooo much worse than they were in the Montreal series down their captain and probable #1 or #2 defenseman. I’m not making fun of the signing. Raddysh is good.

So far:

Gavin Mckenna - Auston Matthews - William Nylander
Matthew Knies - John Tavares - Easton Cowan
Dakota Joshua - x - x
Steven Lorentz - x - x
Domi LTIR

Mccabe - Raddysh
Rielly - Tanev
OEL - Carlo
Andrae

Stolarz
Hildeby
Akhtyamov

18.5M to go

You mean the guy who missed a lot of last season, clearly declined, turns 36 soon, and is far past his prime, who was musing about possibly retiring?

Hedman's stats were by far the worst of his career. 1 goal in 33 games, and his first minus season in 15 years.

How many injured and declining 36 year-olds suddenly bounce back to their prime form? I wouldn't count on that. Sure, maybe he'll be serviceable, but his years of being a superstar are over.
He was playing with an injured elbow or leg all year independent of his mental health issues. Nobody is arguing he’s not past his prime but he’s still good enough to run the power play when he’s healthy. Dude doesn’t need to score 20 for TB to be pretty much as good as they were.

McMann probably a better example. Played his 1st NHL game at 27 due to injuries on the Leafs. Now he's going to be one of the top UFA's if he makes it to market.

I have ZERO idea what the Leafs plan is. It's insane.

What's not to understand. They had an off year similar to Avs in 2017, got a 1stOA pick out of it, still have a core of superstars under 30 and in their primes and needed a few tweaks to the defense.

Only haters think the Leafs are entering a long rebuild. They are back to being in a divisional Atlantic spot this year

Yeah, but he's also going to want to get paid more without having a 70 point season.
We are gonna go in circles about this until the cows come home so gonna end it here.

I think there’s value in a 25 year old that teams believe are a top pairing guy and having a year to try and sign him.

I don’t think Raddysh and Byram’s situations and therefore value are comparable personally. When Byram is traded we will circle back and I’ll admit I was wrong if they only get a pick.

I was interested to compare Gio (peaked late) to Raddysh...

I'm not as worried as I was after looking at the numbers for like aged seasons, though not expecting Raddysh to play for 11 more seasons

I just knew what Jim Hillier was missing to run his 1-3-1 trap effectively was a soft, one-way PMD in his 30s with one good year of play. Chayka masterclass.

I have ZERO idea what the Leafs plan is. It's insane.
Here's a hint: they don't have a first-round pick next season.

This signing, though, is an enormous risk. Raddysh is 30 years old, and unproven. What's their window to compete? If it's during the latter parts of the contract, it might actively hinder them. This is a "win now"-style contract, but they're in no place to try to win now.

This is a great move and Raddysh will be a great player, even if he isn't quite the ~PPG defenseman of last year

Chayka is doing a good job thus far, the d-core's exiting ability was horrific and he brought in two guys who are elite at that
