Don't think he's going to have that much value as a rental demanding 10M.
Sabres already let him speak with teams about contract extensions last summer, I’m sure it’ll be the same. Has a good reputation around the league and just had his best season, Sabres will do fine.

Happy to have a point shot for the first time since maybe McCabe? Not a fan of contract at all. I took all kinds of heat when I was livid about the Clarkson contract but I will point out the same thing now as I did then: if you sign someone coming off a statistical blip year, you can offer term OR salary but never both. Too much risk.

Well, that's poor management from Tampa. They clearly have a need for an offensive defenseman, PP QB. You sign Raddysh and trade away a 3rd line player to make room for the extra $2 million needed.

They offered Raddysh $5.75 mil, they clearly don't see him as worth more than that.

One thing for sure I noticed in the Tampa Montreal series, is Tampa is a team of grinders with a few offensive players, that were easy to shut down. Their offensive depth has taken a huge hit from not wanting to pay Raddysh. Considering the tax situations in Florida and Ontario, they could have probably got him for $7.5 - $8 mil.

Tampa's talent decline continues.
the part i couldnt understand about TB not resigning him, is based on what Hedman was saying at the end there... I'm not so sure he'll even be back next season, unless he's changed his tune layely?

How is he on the defensive side of the game? I assume not all that good?

The term really doesn't matter much imo, the Leafs are going to be rebuilding in approximately 3-5 years anyway.

Your expectations seem out of whack. Theres a single 70 point d man that makes in the 8m. Every other one makes more. Even if he hits 50-60 it is still not an outrageous over pay. Oilers are paying Walman 7m...
This guy had a career year at age 30, all the power to him. But to expect even the 50-60pt range will be his new normal seems a bit far fetched to me, no?

Same people that say the Leafs should be rebuilding are also the ones saying the term is way to long lol. Make it make sense. Why does the term matter if they should be rebuilding.

Well if they were rebuilding it would not ideal because by years 5-8 when you probably expect to be competitive he's probably not worth the AAV anymore.

But it's clear the Leafs aren't going to do a full rebuild, so I think a contract like this is fine.

If you don't think this UFA class is going to raise his expectations, I'd be surprised.

Rumour is Carlson is getting over 10M. What's Byram getting then?

Talking about primes and declines doesn't really matter when it comes to Silly Season. Toronto has too much money, a tiny farm system, and too few draft picks. This was always going to be the ultimate result of that.

They actually have a good farm system and many draft picks. Pretty clear Chayka is doing both. He is prioritizing the draft and prospects/younger players while also adding guys for essentially free that improve the team today like Raddysh.

Not an NHL talent for most of his 20's.

Finally makes the show on a deep team with a need for cost controlled contracts at 27

Has a season where he completely blows up in the absence of one of the teams best defencemen.

Signs 8 year deal at 8.5 million dollars.

Most certainly a risk/reward deal.

Is he.....

A late bloomer.

A product of his environment.

or

A one hit wonder.

Leafs fans are about to find out!

David had significant back issues that got far worse once signing with the Leafs. I worked with David's father for 8 years as he conducted a lot of the training where we worked. He'd have been a fine player for the leafs without those injuries.

I’m sure Darren Ferris is plenty locked in onto what this UFA class is getting and put his offer (10+ million) out to keep him in Buffalo. I’d bet there’s some teams that wanna do it, I’m not one of them.

Toronto acquires a potential top pairing right-shot defenseman.

From a division rival in return for a fifth round pick.

You have to bear in mind that it's challenging to find these types of players, particularly if you're asset poor and have very little to offer in the trade market . The Leafs also have a pretty porous blueline and needed an upgrade there in the worst possible way.

The one and only knock on this trade is the term and some uncertainty about whether he's a flash in the pan. But that's just the nature of the beast in free agency. There's a premium when signing a free agent, but it doesn't require trading off the roster or the asset pool.

Pretty decent gamble in the circumstances.

Gee, if only they had a hall of fame offensive defenseman sitting around somewhere. That would be nice, I think. No, no way that’s possible. I doubt he could possibly take over Darren Raddysh’s role on the power play.

Sure, but signing up to pay him 10M+ lowers his value in a trade.
