This guy was once Washington's top prospect and future in net, yet they walked away from him for nothing. Even guys like Georgiev and Venecek got some picks in return. That's a huge red flag
He would have cost them something like 3 million, because of qualifying offer.

I don't see the upside, from a Washington fan's perspective. The 2015 draft was a long time ago.

In the NHL, he's shown very little improvement despite the organization basically handing him the starter's role, only to lose it to Vanecek (who isn't any better) almost every time.

He just doesn't play like an NHL goalie should. His angles are off way more than they should be, and as a result he has to flop around in the crease to recover - which is where the 'athleticism' tag comes from. He has no composure with the puck behind his net, to the point where I'd occasionally see his defensemen actually motion and yell at him to stay in the net instead of going back to play pucks. His rebound control is poor as well, but that's an attribute that I think could be coached up.

He also might be a headcase.

Yeah, despite the upside, I don't think this is the right market for Samsonov to turn his career around. Comrie signed for the same money, I think he'd have been the better choice.

This deal makes the Murray trade more palatable in my opinion.

On a one year deal, Samsonov should have plenty of motivation to take the next step at the NHL level and he still has plenty of upside at his age given his pedigree.

I pretty much don't know any player outside the Leafs, but at the very least it sounds like this guy is cheap enough they can always jettison him if he crashes and they still have Kellgren.

That’s Dubas’s type of goalie

I don't mind this signing. He's young and if he works out then great. If not then its only for a season and you can let him go and find someone else. Hope he finds his game here much like we're hoping Murray can. Only thing that could've made it better is to get 50% retention on Murray so that you could get both goalies for under 5 million and still have more money leftover for other potential moves.

"If he sucks we can ditch him for nothing" - yes, nothing but another wasted year of the core's primes. Samsonov and Murray have both been bad three straight seasons now. At least Murray had a track record of success before injuries broke him, what does Samsonov have? A draft pedigree from 2015? Who cares anymore?

Another reason why murray trade is dumb. This guy is young and still putting it together and highly skill.

Perfect season for him to become a no.1. If a team with Leafs cap structure had their highest paid goalie at 1.8 mil it is game over for the league, but this idiot went and panic bought murray and his 4.7 cap hit.

Samsonov and a GOOD mid range player to add to the forwards >>>>> samsonov + murray

You can't just go with Samsanov though. That's such a unnecessary risk.

Ideally would be Samsanov and Comrie for a combined 3.6.

Would have preferred a Jack/Samsonov but I wasn’t sold on Jack for another 5 years either. This’ll do with what was out there. Some “hold on to your butts” gambling by Dubas.

Samsonov + Comrie + 1.1 mil cap room >>> Samsonov + Murray. You are correct too. Value wise murray trade is one of the worst value trades seen since erat for forsberg so not that hard to come up with other scenarios.

My thoughts exactly

2nd tender. Not likely to carry us to a cup if Murray flops.

It's a tender, deals fine. Indifferent.

It's actually Samsanov + Comrie +2.9 cap
VS
Samsanov + Murray

I know what one I'd prefer.
Now nothing says Comrie was willing to sign here.
