I like where the goaltending is now. Two hungry prove- it starters to push each other.

If for some reason Matt is hurt, he will come off the cap and they’ll grab someone else. If he’s not hurt, we have two potential starters in the playoffs - ride the hot hand.

At 1.8 for Samsonov, we may have enough to actually sign someone else today, so I can keep listening to TSN at the office.

Has been pretty meh throughout his career so far, but there's potential there. Don't mind this on a cheap 1 year deal.

Love it. Stays an RFA at the end of the deal too. High upside bets by Dubas with fairly low risk. Only spending 6.5 million on goalies now, which is actually quite good.

I keep looking at the records of our backups and we played at a 110 pt pace with combined .890 goaltending from them. Insanity.
It's truly insane. But it also shows how the Leafs can possibly take the next step if one gets hot at the right time. League average goaltending should keep them in the hunt.

This is the winner in this thread.

Leafs clearly didn't have faith in Campbell and believe Murray can lift his game when it matters, post-season.

I thought Campbell was solid, but, they didn't like his really wide inconsistency of "all-star or just bad'. I will also say, Leafs defense is better than some give them credit for. I certainly prefer our D to Oilers.

I don't agree. I believe the Leafs locker room and managment LOVED Campbell.

The problem was term. Nothing more. And the term wasn't because they don't have faith in Campbell, it was due to their needing to be flexible with cap when they have to resign M and M next summer.

That's why little to no money was committed this year in goaltending long term. Murray who is less then Campbell but next summer will only have 1 year left will be much easier to move then Campbell would be worse case scenerio. Samsonov is a 1 year deal.

Dubas is playing this smart and keeping his cap available for his star players. Which if that's the case, then I believe this is smart.

I think they loved the guy, not the player.
Just my opinion.

I really like the Murray/Samsonov tandem. Both not without their faults (who isn't).

But this is the most confidence i've been in our Goalie tandem for as long as I can remember. Good work.

I don't like the Murray deal. But I do like how Dubas has recognized that Campbell isn't a number 1 and that both Murray and Samsonov have the potential to be a number 1.

Samsonov is gambling on himself here..

Knowing the injury history of Murray, he knows he will get starts and be able to put up decent stats on a stronger team, and with arbitration rights next year his stats could be better than they are this year.

This seems like he is setting himself up for a bigger contract with term next summer,

Makes no sense.

Happy with this move.

Put me in the camp that believes in Murray too. He will turn it around, and if not his contract is easily taken care of.

High upside, high risk tandem.

Can't believe Campbell went from 1.8m to 5m. Yikes.

Yes, that was the assessment I initially made except when I considered that every team needs a legitimate #1 they believe in, almost regardless of the price, thus, the term issue alone can't be the only reason.

Really, if Leafs (referring to coach and GM) were convinced that Jack is the first half goalie, they don't overpay for Mrazerk and they don't lowball Jack on the initial offer this year. This leads me to believe they do NOT have the faith in him "being the guy".

If they did, they happily pay him 5x5 and go with a cheap $1M backup and a Kallgren/Woll 3rd string. The fact they didn't, makes me believe they simply don't think he has the disposition to be a Cup winner.

Campbell was going to get term. Many teams have faith in Campbell now. He was highly covetted going into the offseason as several teams were looking at aquiring him.
