What difference does it make?
If he’s not signed he can be selected, but he doesn’t count as one of the guys we must expose.
What difference does it make?
Leafs had to sign 1 more defenseman to be exposed in expansion in the case they opt to go 4/4. Dermott will be that guy.
I was hoping for less money, especially since it would be very tough to turn to Bogosian and ask him to take less than 1.5 after this. Hopefully they can still work something out there.
Capspace gained losing Kerf. Not anything worthwhile for the others, though, imo.
Good signing. Next year he solidifies his place in the top 4.
Honestly, now that I think about it....I think Seattle gonna choose Dermott.
Per the expansion rules the Leafs have to expose 1 signed defensemen for the 2021-2022 season. Dermott as an unsigned RFA was eligible for selection from the Kraken prior to his contract, but that wouldn't have helped the Leafs meet their obligations for the draft. By signing him, they can now either expose him or Holl should they want to protect 4D and 4F.
Is this your idea of rinse and repeat?sure they can. Leafs had a great year this year. And should only be better as the next wave of kids gets injected into the lineup.
Bogo got his cup with Tampa last season. He is probably looking for a retirement contract. He will go to the highest bidder IMO
He's a home grown Marlies-connected Dubites kid, of course he stays. What is this kid? He’s not that physical, he’s not offensively threatening, he’s fine defensively, he doesn’t have a great shot. He’s a 6-7. The contract and player are both just meh. He’s a 1.5 million dollar buffer between good and Marincin level d.
I'm on this boat as well.I'm also not as sold on Sandin as some others seem to be
If Leafs were going with 4 D (Reilly, Muzzin, Brodie and Dermott RFA signed or unsigned) and the core 4 F then exposing Holl would have already made them compliant to expansion rules. Signing Dermott doesn't change that dynamic if that was the plan.
If left unprotected Dermott could still have been claimed by Seattle regardless if signed or not only TO was missing the 1 signed Dman to expose on a technicality. So this signing fills that objective. But Dermott was available to the Kraken regardless, only now Leafs are complaint and Dermott covers that also.
So I'm not following the logic of this signing and exposing Holl, as it almost confirms, Dermott signing is to expose him which he was anyways, with the goal to protect Holl it would seem. As exposing Holl and Dermott and protecting neither wouldn't have needed Travis to be signed ahead of the expansion draft.
** Lots of teams are likely to protect unsigned RFA players that need new contracts for 2021 as part of their protected list, so they don't get claimed.
Is it still a great deal if Dermott is the player the Kraken select in the expansion draft?
GM Ron Francis just caught a break and got himself some extra free time if this is a value priced contract, as it saves him signing Dermott, and knowing the re-signing price allows him to budget his salary cap accordingly with known figures.![]()
Lol if the leafs dont bring back Bogosian or someone of his calibre....they gonna have the softest D-core in the whole league.
They were already soft to begin with![]()
He is younger and more skilled than Holl and at lower AAV .. likely Seattle picks up Kerfoot now .. which helps free up more AAV to resign ZachI hope this is expansion draft related, because why are they giving a guy a raise for underperforming? He's a 7th defenceman
