Leafs had to sign 1 more defenseman to be exposed in expansion in the case they opt to go 4/4. Dermott will be that guy.

I was hoping for less money, especially since it would be very tough to turn to Bogosian and ask him to take less than 1.5 after this. Hopefully they can still work something out there.

Bogo got his cup with Tampa last season. He is probably looking for a retirement contract. He will go to the highest bidder IMO

Honestly, now that I think about it....I think Seattle gonna choose Dermott.

Hakstol will have say in who gets picked from the Leafs having being here for few years. Given Dermott was scratched to start the playoffs - I doubt Hakstol picks him

I'll no longer care if they lose Holl to Seattle. It's either him or Dermott and, at this price, I'm fine either way. Good price, especially if he ends up in the #4 the spot next to Muzzin.

Now bring back Bogo for the 3rd pair with Sandin.

Per the expansion rules the Leafs have to expose 1 signed defensemen for the 2021-2022 season. Dermott as an unsigned RFA was eligible for selection from the Kraken prior to his contract, but that wouldn't have helped the Leafs meet their obligations for the draft. By signing him, they can now either expose him or Holl should they want to protect 4D and 4F.

If Leafs were going with 4 D (Reilly, Muzzin, Brodie and Dermott RFA signed or unsigned) and the core 4 F then exposing Holl would have already made them compliant to expansion rules. Signing Dermott doesn't change that dynamic if that was the plan.

If left unprotected Dermott could still have been claimed by Seattle regardless if signed or not only TO was missing the 1 signed Dman to expose on a technicality. So this signing fills that objective. But Dermott was available to the Kraken regardless, only now Leafs are complaint and Dermott covers that also.

So I'm not following the logic of this signing and exposing Holl, as it almost confirms, Dermott signing is to expose him which he was anyways, with the goal to protect Holl it would seem. As exposing Holl and Dermott and protecting neither wouldn't have needed Travis to be signed ahead of the expansion draft.

** Lots of teams are likely to protect unsigned RFA players that need new contracts for 2021 as part of their protected list, so they don't get claimed.

What is this kid? He’s not that physical, he’s not offensively threatening, he’s fine defensively, he doesn’t have a great shot. He’s a 6-7. The contract and player are both just meh. He’s a 1.5 million dollar buffer between good and Marincin level d.

Not really a fan of this. He had time to show what he has got. Not good enough as far as I'm concerned.

Feels like we are gonna be status quo.

First round exit marathon continues.

The flat cap will mean there will be bargains available. Especially later in the off-season.

The top FAs will get paid like always, meaning there will be less available for certain mid-range guys. Bogosian may be one of those guys who would get a 3x3 type deal in a normal year but now has to settle for a one-year deal at just over league minimum.

If not him, there will be others like him available for cheap. And I'm not sure if Bogosian did much if anything to increase his stock compared to last off-season when got that cheapo deal from us.

He's a home grown Marlies-connected Dubites kid, of course he stays.

I'm also not as sold on Sandin as some others seem to be
I'm on this boat as well.

My biggest worry about the kid is his lack of footspeed. We saw him get burned a number of times because he was too slow. The kid needs to find another few gears.

If Holl or Dermott go to Seattle, they're gonna be lights out and get Norris votes.

Just because it's the Leafy thing to happen to us....

FWIW

Leafs currently can't go with 7F 3D and 1G as a valid option as they don't have enough forwards under contract to protect 7 and expose 2 for expansion complain rules.

The core 4 plus Spezza, Kerfoot, Simmonds and Engvall doesn't allow the Leafs to protect 7 without signing another forward that qualifies for expansion to expose 2.

The Dermott signing makes them compliant on D by exposing either Dermott or Holl now.

But as a result of this it appears Leafs are currently sitting at protecting 8 skaters (including 4 D?) and 1 X goalie otherwise they're not compliant at present.

They could protect 5 forwards including Kerfoot. and only 3 Dmen, but then what the use is the Dermott signing today as that doesn't change anything?

They could have wanted to make sure they signed Dermott at a lesser AAV than Holl before gambling to expose Holl and protecting Dermott unsigned.

They probably said to Dermott they want him at a 1.5AAV signed before protecting him???

Edit.
Clearly this is expansion-draft related. Let's see what happens first.

Is it still a great deal if Dermott is the player the Kraken select in the expansion draft?

GM Ron Francis just caught a break and got himself some extra free time if this is a value priced contract, as it saves him signing Dermott, and knowing the re-signing price allows him to budget his salary cap accordingly with known figures. ;)

I think we probably protect Dermott now and expose both Holl/Kerfoot. I love Holl but we don't have anyone to place on LTIR and get around it. Protect the big 4 forwards and Rielly/Brodie/Muzzin/Dermott

I hope this is expansion draft related, because why are they giving a guy a raise for underperforming? He's a 7th defenceman

Decent AAV for the player in exchange for term for the team. Should end up being solid value by season two, if not next season.

Leafs gonna go 4 4 1
Matty JT Willy and Mitch
Rielly Muzzy Brodie and Dermy
Soup

Holl and Kerfoot get exposed .. Seattle likely takes Kerfoot based on his playoff performance

He is younger and more skilled than Holl and at lower AAV .. likely Seattle picks up Kerfoot now .. which helps free up more AAV to resign Zach
