but then we lose another guy to Seattle.
I can't see any more than 1
-2 of Holl, Derm, Kerfoot, Engvall and Mik returning. I figure 1 will go to Seatrlw (Kerfoot is my guess) and most of the others get flipped for picks

Good to see our 4th best defenceman get unfairly maligned because of 1 bad turnover.

It's a great deal and if they trade Rielly, he should take up the 2LD spot.
Who's saying he's our 4th best.. you? He's probably Seattle bound.

Very nice.

I was so sure that Dermott would cost more than Holl that I had already kissed Dermott goodbye.....but now that Dermott's cheaper it's definitely Holl that gets exposed.

Important to note that the leafs needed to sign another exposable dman if they wanted to protect 4 dmen, so now that "expose 1 dman" criteria is filled by Holl if we decide to protect 4D, which I think we obviously will now.

So our exposures will be:

Tempting:

Kerfoot (27): $3.5m x 2yrs caphit, $1.725m x 2yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Holl (29): $2.0m x 2yrs caphit, $2.0m x 2yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Engvall (25): $1.25m x 1yrs caphit, $1.25m x 1yrs real dollars, RFA x 2yrs at expiry

Not so tempting:

Simmonds (33): $0.9m x 2yrs caphit, $0.9m x 2yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Spezza (38): $0.75m x 1yrs caphit, $0.75m x 1yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Hutchinson (31): $0.725 x 1yrs caphit, $0.75m x 1yrs real dollars, UFA at expire

So Kerfoot is actually cheaper than Holl for Seattle in terms of real dollars, but has $1.5m higher caphit - which may or may not be more attractive for Seattle.
How could Travis dermott possibly justify asking for money than Justin Holl?

Did you forget how underwhelming dermott has been the past two years?

He brings little puck moving, no offense, and is playing around 15 minutes a night vs bottom end competition. He's going to be 25 next year and isn't a guy who shows excellent underlying IQ which can lead to big progression should he get more opportunity

If he asked for more than Holl, dubas would have to be delusional to give him that contract. Holl as inconsistent as he's been has been a couple of tiers better than dermott these past two years

Dermott has fallen off since he suffered that shoulder injury vs the Oilers in 2019. He was playing the best hockey of his career back then as the 2RHD i think and was on a pairing with Muzzin.

Since then he hasn't shown anything and has settled being our 6th or 7th best defenseman

Holl is a steal for what he's turned into. $2m for a solid #4 / very good #5 dman is great value.

I didn't expect Holl's deal signed as a 28yr old with little NHL experience to have any bearing at all on a young RFA with good NHL performance like Dermott.

I don't see why. They're all good, and they're all cheap other than Kerf.
Change. They can't come back with the same roster and only shuffle our bottom line FA signings from last year like Jumbo and Bogo.

So it's Holl or Dermott, that's fine.

I just look at it as cap space gained. Maybe they want to make a serious push for Hamilton?

Capspace gained losing Kerf. Not anything worthwhile for the others, though, imo.

sure they can. Leafs had a great year this year. And should only be better as the next wave of kids gets injected into the lineup.

If the Leafs were planning on going with 8 skaters ie 4 X F and 4 X D then there would have been no need to re-sign Dermott, as there was nothing stopping them from protecting him as a RFA, and exposing Holl to expansion.

Signing Dermott doesn't seem to factor into whom the Leafs protect or expose as Dermott was eligible as a RFA to be claimed by Kraken.

Capfriendly Expansion draft tool already confirms this ... .Seattle Expansion Draft Simulator - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Note: Players who meet or are projected to meet the exposure requirements are highlighted in green.

Per the expansion rules the Leafs have to expose 1 signed defensemen for the 2021-2022 season. Dermott as an unsigned RFA was eligible for selection from the Kraken prior to his contract, but that wouldn't have helped the Leafs meet their obligations for the draft. By signing him, they can now either expose him or Holl should they want to protect 4D and 4F.

Dermotts performance is on the bottom pairing almost exclusively. He's had very few games in his career in a major role for the team.

Asking for something like 2.25 x 2 would have been pretty crazy. A guy like Carlo got 2.85M x 2 and he was the Bruins 3rd best d-men playing top 4 role with match-up role and proving them with a great support piece to Krug who was a defensive nightmare

Dermott as our 6th best these past two years was always looking at 1.1 to 1.5. We got 2 years so 1.5 is fine but he isn't a guy with a future on this team unless a Rielly deal occurs or a Muzzin trade.

Rielly
Muzzin
Sandin

Will be the 3 LHDs next year. If holls dealt and we re fully committed to helping dermott regain the form he was at in 2019 before his injury we move Holl and play him 2RHD with Muzzin

Wouldn't mind Bogo back but we need to start giving Liljegren some reps on the right side.

If we lose one of Dermott/Holl I'd re-sign him, but I think he could find a better spot elsewhere.

I would look at adding cheap depth guys like Nemeth or Hakanpaa though behind them.

Opposite type of D that this team needs. Need guys who are hard to play against. Look at Tampa and Montreal D.

Dubas continues to work towards bringing the same core group back. Should be interesting how it all plays out. Many people say DISASTER is looming. Maybe they will do great though.
The off season just started.

Honestly, now that I think about it....I think Seattle gonna choose Dermott.
People are saying there's a ton of defensemen going to be available and zero centers. That's why they think Kerfoot will be chosen from us. Dermott is easily the best value for their dollar though if they can get enough C's elsewhere.

I don't agree. Holl is not a solid #4.
