Don’t really love him as a player tbh

Could’ve been replaced by and ELC in Sandin

Would’ve preferred to flip him and gain some draft capital
Honestly, I'd like to move Sandin.

Undersized Dman who also can't skate, not super valuable to me. Great with the puck but unless his skating improves significantly he's basically a 3rd pair PP QB, if we move on from Rielly it makes more sense to keep Sandin but if we don't he's at best a moderate upgrade as a PP QB. Dermott might not be the most well liked guy around here but when he's on the ice we don't give up much - and it's not just advanced stats that say this, he's been around long enough to look at raw ES goals against and the numbers are good. I'd rather a 3rd pair Dman who gives up very little than a PP QB who needs sheltering at ES.

Interesting bit of business. Now you have Holl with 2yrs x 2mil per, and Dermott with 2yrs x 1.5mil per. Dermott can play both sides, and is 5 years younger. Are they going to dangle Holl? Kerfoot? Not sure the angle. Or if this is to add value in a sign and trade, that has maybe been discussed with Dermott prior to signing. Give him a nice little "thank you" raise, and send him on his way. I'm interested in what the thoughts are behind this. Or maybe it's nothing...maybe they're just signing one of their RFAs and getting it over and done with.

Is it still a great deal if Dermott is the player the Kraken select in the expansion draft?

GM Ron Francis just caught a break and got himself some extra free time if this is a value priced contract, as it saves him signing Dermott, and knowing the re-signing price allows him to budget his salary cap accordingly with known figures. ;)
This is some high level sarcasm

No way. Sandin is a great prospect and will be a great D

Problem was his usage. Why would you dress him in game 1 when Dermott has been playing all season. That goal he gave up had to do with Joe, not him
Bryon is a heck of a skater

Our coached put him in there for fail. Simple as that. Canadians didn't play Romanov until game 4 and he played all season

Sandin only has 37 games under his belt then you put him against a good skating team in games where he shouldn't have been

Dermott is an interesting player to me. I really do think he can still develop into a very quality NHL defensemen. I personally saw a progression last year. He looked far more comfortable in his own end, and really simplified his offense to not expose himself defensively. He doesn't have the skill to be a high point producing D-man in the NHL IMO. I think management and the coaching staff are realizing this. Make him play a defense first game and I truly do feel like he can have a decent career.

I am not sure I am thrilled with 1.5million but I also don't hate it. It is looking like we are going to have the same issue with Lilly getting boxed out of the lineup once again. At some point we have to see what Lilly can do at the NHL Level and give him a consistent opportunity to be an NHL regular. His upside is far greater than Dermott's at this point IMO. I recognize Dermott presents a more reliable option at the current moment, but I really don't think it's because he is the better player but more so that he's been given the NHL experience.

I loved what I saw from Bogo all year. Would love to see him back in some capacity, but it only further deepens the box out for Lilly on the right side. Something has got to give in my opinion. I just can't see Sandin and Lilly not getting an opportunity next year. They are pivotal to this teams success in years to come. They need to get minutes at the highest level IMO. They are both ready. Yes they will make mistakes, but that's part of the proccess

Not a big fan of the number or the player personally

He had arbitration rights so if the team wanted a two year deal this is more or less where it was going to end up give or take 100k or so. Think Evolving Wilds model had him getting 1.2/3 mil aav.

Personally I'm curious about how they see his role with the team moving forward. Ie is he expansion fodder or seen as a growing part of the D core.

Not upset about the cost but I am kinda confused about why he got a raise over 1 mil and his production didn't really improve if I remember correctly and struggled to consistently make the lineup. Hopefully this means that Holl is exposed because I really wanna see Liljegren get some NHL action.

During a flat cap Dermott goes from 1 year @$875k to 2 years at $1.5 mil AAV deal ?

Did people notice Dermott was a healthy scratch for > 1/2 the Leafs playoff series playing in only 3 games, while being replaced by Sandin who played in only 9 regular season games but played 5 playoff games at the expense of Travis?

In 51 games last year Dermott put up 2-4-6 points and nearly doubled his salary and doubled his term.

True, I think I've just mentally moved on at this point and have penciled in Lilj/Sandin with a veteran PKer for those bottom 3 spots and can't see Dermott capable of playing top 4 in this market.

Dermott has all the tools to be a top 4 D. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up developing into that role on another team, especially if he gets picked by Seattle

I agree with that as well, no way he should have been playing after only playing 9 games over the last year and a half. But he's still not a good skater, Rielly gets back on that Byron goal and Dermott cuts off Anderson on the first goal if he was there instead.

I would rather protect Dermott than Holl, but given that the management/coaching staff are big fan of him, I don't think it is happening.
Holl's number declined after first one month and he is also 29.

I was hoping for Dermott and Holl both to be gone. One to Seattle and the other by trade. This team needs to get bigger on the back end.

We'll still have puck-moving defenseman in Reilly, Sandin, and Muzzin to an extent. Heck even Bogosian was great moving the puck if we decide to bring him back

I realize everyone is super-bitter right now, but the number of comments completely writing off a 24-year-old defenceman with Dermott's talent is disappointing.

I think most fans are bitter because we traded down to get him giving up a spot we could have drafted Konecny

I have no problems with him. I like him more than Holl
