Seriously though 1.5M is whatever. Dermott is an irrelevant hockey player at the moment.

If he takes a step then it's a win and we can move out Holl who stinks half the year and save 500k pairing him with Muzzin

Next year if dermott isn't playing 19-20 minutes a game and on the 2nd pairing this deal is a bad one

We've messed up developing defensive prospect for years now. We need to give dermott every chance to play a big role next year.

We can't have holl + sandin + dermott be our bottom 3 guys.

Move holl and have dermott be the 4th guy, lilijgren be the 5th and sandin or Bogo(on off-hand) be the 6th

Why the hell is he getting 1.5M???

He didn't improve at all as a player.

He's overpaid add another one to the collection

Am I serious or not?

Terrible deal. Keefe did everything possible to shelter him from all situations, especially on the PK where a bottom pairing should be playing.

Leafs had to sign 1 more defenseman to be exposed in expansion in the case they opt to go 4/4. Dermott will be that guy.

I was hoping for less money, especially since it would be very tough to turn to Bogosian and ask him to take less than 1.5 after this. Hopefully they can still work something out there.

He would need to be protected regardless if they want to keep him.

Seattle would just select him as an RFA and negotiate his contract, but it isn't the same as a UFA, it would make less sense if he was a UFA to do this.
ah that makes sense, I was thinking it was similar to the UFA's situation

Why did they do this before the expansion draft?
Seattle can sign an unprotected RFA or UFA during a special 48 hour negotiating period that takes place between the time that teams submit their protection lists and the day of the expansion draft. Teams do not get compensation for Seattle signing an RFA like they would in the case of an offer sheet. If Seattle does that, the team the player is currently on will not lose an additional player in the expansion draft.

I can't tell which one I want to go to Seattle more between Dermott and Holl lol.
They're both pretty uneventful D to be honest. Not really top of the heap defensively, no offensive skills, ok puck movers, not physical, etc..

I don't think it's too terrible of a loss losing either one.

Nice deal, although I don't think he'll be on this team next year.

ahhh, I see as some other posters mentioned as well. Great deal at 1.5M. We shit on Dubas all day, give him props for this one.

Is it still a great deal if Dermott is the player the Kraken select in the expansion draft?

GM Ron Francis just caught a break and got himself some extra free time if this is a value priced contract, as it saves him signing Dermott, and knowing the re-signing price allows him to budget his salary cap accordingly with known figures. ;)

I wonder how this relates to the Seattle strategy with Dermott locked into a contract.

My first thought was that if the goal was to keep Kerfoot, while exposing him that baiting the hook with Dermott signed might be the angle Leafs are playing at here.

or Vice versa

If Kraken think 2 years at $1.5 mil is too much for a 3rd pairing Dman like Dermott that might sway them towards Kerfoot instead, because as an RFA Seattle could have signed Dermott for less potentially themselves.

Give away in the defensive zone in overtime.

Dubas: Give that man a raise in fact double his salary.

As bad as that giveaway was, that was no where near Gally

That was a bad give away but still a saveable shot. It was KK who shot it, not exactly Ovechkin
From the middle of the ice, you should be able to save that

He was screened but if you just make yourself big, it hits you. But hey, what do I know. I am not an NHL goalie

This looks like a deal primed for be taken in expansion. A 2 year deal is more suitable for Seattle anyways. I prefer Bogosian anyways

Like Dermy over Holl but not sure he deserved that much of a raise. Perhaps Dubas did it as a thank you in anticipation of Dermy being a Kraken.

Solid signing. Pre-cursor to another trade. Reilly should be dealt for prospects and picks.

Sign Hamilton.

Muzzin-Hamilton
Dermott-Brodie
Sandin-Holl

Protect Muzzin, Dermott, Brodie, Holl, Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares in expansion draft along with Campbell.

Dermott is very underrated and haters will hate. Better partner and more playing time will do wonders for him. At the cost he just signed for, he may be just as good as Reilly for a fraction of the cost. He and Sandin will make up for the lost offense on the left side while we get upgraded on the right side.

This defense core gets better defensively with the trade of Reilly and insertion of Hamilton, Sandin and Dermott on a full time basis.

For those that wanted Bogo back it still a possibility as a rotational 7th dman, or another vet can be brought it at vet minimum.

Love this signing if its a sign of things to come.
