Honestly, now that I think about it....I think Seattle gonna choose Dermott.

Honestly, I'd like to move Sandin.

Undersized Dman who also can't skate, not super valuable to me. Great with the puck but unless his skating improves significantly he's basically a 3rd pair PP QB, if we move on from Rielly it makes more sense to keep Sandin but if we don't he's at best a moderate upgrade as a PP QB. Dermott might not be the most well liked guy around here but when he's on the ice we don't give up much - and it's not just advanced stats that say this, he's been around long enough to look at raw ES goals against and the numbers are good. I'd rather a 3rd pair Dman who gives up very little than a PP QB who needs sheltering at ES.
I'm also not as sold on Sandin as some others seem to be

If we protect 8 skaters and 1 goalie we need another dman under contract to meet exposure requirements. Question is whether we protect Holl or Dermott.

If the Leafs were planning on going with 8 skaters ie 4 X F and 4 X D then there would have been no need to re-sign Dermott, as there was nothing stopping them from protecting him as a RFA, and exposing Holl to expansion.

Signing Dermott doesn't seem to factor into whom the Leafs protect or expose as Dermott was eligible as a RFA to be claimed by Kraken.

Oh great another 1st rd exit.

Trade holl and get someone with some physicality back there

Trading Holl and getting someone more mobile and physical would be a good upgrade, Is Larsson any of interest to us? Seems to be a good dman who plays on the right side. Not sure if he gets a raise from his 4m cap hit in the open market.

Good to see our 4th best defenceman get unfairly maligned because of 1 bad turnover.

It's a great deal and if they trade Rielly, he should take up the 2LD spot.

Should have got 1.25m per considering the cap situation across the league.

Another overpayment by Dubas, but he could be traded or taken by Seattle.

Anybody else see Petry coughing it up terribly multiple times in the finals? Dermott was great that game covering for injured Muzzin, but eventually he coughed it up and Kotka scored on a low danger scoring chance.

A 4th best defenceman doesn't play 13 minutes a night

Leafs used himself a #7 d-man. He had no offensive contributions and didn't show any offensive poise or growth in his game since 2019

Dermott is very much a reclamation project if Seattle takes him. His values never been lower from a trade perspective and his on the team role was near non-existent this year

Gonna be expensive. But I do like Larsson's game

He's been "close" to re-signing with EDM for a while now, might be waiting for expansion draft to be done.

I keep thinking Oleksiak is exactly the type of D they need to add this off season. Size and can skate.

WOuld love Oleksiak but I think he gonna be overpaid.

I was thinking more so bringing back Bogosian for top 4 min and than signing someone like Jani Hankanpaa for the 3rd pairing. Big boy who had a solid year last year and is extremely physical. Would come cheap

Third pairing needs a man to anchor and punish opposing players. Would of like to see bogo play with Muzzin in tight or bigger teams

Exactly my thought process. An ideal d-core for next season I want

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Bogosian
Sandin - Hankanpaa

Very nice.

I was so sure that Dermott would cost more than Holl that I had already kissed Dermott goodbye.....but now that Dermott's cheaper it's definitely Holl that gets exposed.

Important to note that the leafs needed to sign another exposable dman if they wanted to protect 4 dmen, so now that "expose 1 dman" criteria is filled by Holl if we decide to protect 4D, which I think we obviously will now.

So our exposures will be:

Tempting:

Kerfoot (27): $3.5m x 2yrs caphit, $1.725m x 2yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Holl (29): $2.0m x 2yrs caphit, $2.0m x 2yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Engvall (25): $1.25m x 1yrs caphit, $1.25m x 1yrs real dollars, RFA x 2yrs at expiry

Not so tempting:

Simmonds (33): $0.9m x 2yrs caphit, $0.9m x 2yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Spezza (38): $0.75m x 1yrs caphit, $0.75m x 1yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Hutchinson (31): $0.725 x 1yrs caphit, $0.75m x 1yrs real dollars, UFA at expire

So Kerfoot is actually cheaper than Holl for Seattle in terms of real dollars, but has $1.5m higher caphit - which may or may not be more attractive for Seattle.

A team friendly deal finally. Maybe learning something from that garbage marner contract

I suspect the line of thinking from Dubas is as follows:
- I need to get a defenceman signed in order to meet exposure requirements.
- I want them to take Travis Dermott (over Kerfoot & Holl), but realize that might be a tough sell given the number of similar defenceman likely to be available.
- Make Travis Dermott more appealing by locking him into a 2 year deal at $1.5m, as the consensus seems to be that the Kraken would like to weaponize cap space.

From Dermott's perspective, it's a situation where he might be gone regardless. He might as well get some security.

Gonna be expensive. But I do like Larsson's game

I think he's affordable if he resigns similar to what hes making this year which is 4m. If you trade Holl, your only adding 2m to our cap.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Larsson
Dermott - Sandin/Lilly/Bogo

Thats not a bad d-core to have going into next season, I think we do need a upgrade on Holl though, whether that is Larsson or someone else.

Could also try to trade Kerfoot prior to expansion to a team that has an open spot to protect him.

Edmonton wants Hyman so maybe we just trade each Hyman's and Larssons rights for each other

I think it is the third point, make Dermott more appealing in a 2 year deal for Seattle, or another rebuilding team

Opposite type of D that this team needs. Need guys who are hard to play against. Look at Tampa and Montreal D.

Dubas continues to work towards bringing the same core group back. Should be interesting how it all plays out. Many people say DISASTER is looming. Maybe they will do great though.
