I'm on this boat as well.

My biggest worry about the kid is his lack of footspeed. We saw him get burned a number of times because he was too slow. The kid needs to find another few gears.
A lot of people are hard on Dermott, but I see Dermott as an upgraded Sandin tbh.
Both are prone to some big time defensive gaffs
Both will randomly surprise you with a little bit of an "edge" in the way of a hit. Leaving you thinking there's more of that in them, then it disappears for a handful of games.
Both are around the same stature
Both have powerplay ability...we just haven't given Dermott as much leash. But by all accounts he was a PP quarterback and offensive Dman when drafted from Erie
And the tie breaker goes to Dermott, because he has the edge in skating ability. Dermott is a great skater, Sandin not so much

There's nothing wrong with this contract.

What's wrong is this really is becoming a country club again just bringing back a mediocre group of guys after spectacular failure instead of gutting things more. Simmonds, Dermott, the coaching staff, the core players....they're just bringing it back and expecting different results. Good luck.

Meh, I don't know what he'd get in arb but at first glance, doesn't look like much of a successful, team friendly negotiation, again. I hope he takes a big step in his development if he isn't taken in the expansion draft.

Very interested to see the leafs lineup now... honestly thought Dermott was gone but now that bottom pairing is going to be packed...

Maybe they let Holl get taken and slide demott up with muzzin?

A fair signing. I am of the opinion he has respectable future career in the NHL that could span another decade+. Whether in Toronto or elsewhere, he is an NHL player, he won't see the minors again in his career barring a real fall off the cliff.

Also, unlike forwards who often peak in their mid-20s, D Men often don't reach their prime until after age 30, especially if they focus on defense and not flashy, end-to-end rushes.

Now if I am playing Fantasy Hockey, I'd prefer Leafs sign Bogosian, expose Dermott and see if they can add Hamilton assuming Hyman, Andersen walk and Reilly is traded.

In an ideal world, I'd like to see Sandin as #7, which is where I believe he should be if possible. Ease him into games, give him protected minutes, let him adjust and find his groove over time.

I am bullish on him longterm too, but, if the Leafs want to convince us they are serious S.C contenders, I want a mean, competent six in the back end. Let him develop in the NHL, but don't put him in the spotlight unnecessarily.

Nah we'll make the playoffs. Thats when we'll beat teams when they're sleep walking or pond skating throughout the regular season.

Because at the end of the day it really not a Talent issue...than it is a work ethic issue. This team don't have the intensity, ruggedness and hustle for the playoffs.
Maybe, but the off-season has barely begun.

Dermott is an interesting player to me. I really do think he can still develop into a very quality NHL defensemen. I personally saw a progression last year. He looked far more comfortable in his own end, and really simplified his offense to not expose himself defensively. He doesn't have the skill to be a high point producing D-man in the NHL IMO. I think management and the coaching staff are realizing this. Make him play a defense first game and I truly do feel like he can have a decent career.

I am not sure I am thrilled with 1.5million but I also don't hate it. It is looking like we are going to have the same issue with Lilly getting boxed out of the lineup once again. At some point we have to see what Lilly can do at the NHL Level and give him a consistent opportunity to be an NHL regular. His upside is far greater than Dermott's at this point IMO. I recognize Dermott presents a more reliable option at the current moment, but I really don't think it's because he is the better player but more so that he's been given the NHL experience.

I loved what I saw from Bogo all year. Would love to see him back in some capacity, but it only further deepens the box out for Lilly on the right side. Something has got to give in my opinion. I just can't see Sandin and Lilly not getting an opportunity next year. They are pivotal to this teams success in years to come. They need to get minutes at the highest level IMO. They are both ready. Yes they will make mistakes, but that's part of the proccess
Yes, of course. No physical defensemen are the way to win the Cup...

Kerfoot (27): $3.5m x 2yrs caphit, $1.725m x 2yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Holl (29): $2.0m x 2yrs caphit, $2.0m x 2yrs real dollars, UFA at expiry
Engvall (25): $1.25m x 1yrs caphit, $1.25m x 1yrs real dollars, RFA x 2yrs at expiry

So Kerfoot is actually cheaper than Holl for Seattle in terms of real dollars, but has $1.5m higher caphit - which may or may not be more attractive for Seattle.

OK I got this wrong - turns out if Seattle picks Kerfoot they have to repay us his signing bonus, so no extra savings for them.

They still get a bit of a discount tho as he will only cost $2.7m each year in real dollars despite his $3.5m caphit.

Might be worth it to trade Kerf to a team where getting him at $1.7m in real dollars would be worth a bunch - though the return would have to be more valuable than losing a Holl or Engvall to Seattle.

I'll no longer care if they lose Holl to Seattle. It's either him or Dermott and, at this price, I'm fine either way. Good price, especially if he ends up in the #4 the spot next to Muzzin.

Now bring back Bogo for the 3rd pair with Sandin.
Wow. It's almost like Seattle isn't going to have many options for picks from 30 other teams. Typical Leafs' fans, over rating their players.

I think quite the opposite. Dermott will be protected and Holl exposed

If the intention of the two-year deal is to lock in a lower AAV once Dermott is playing top-four minutes next year, then this could be true.

But given that the coaching staff routinely demotes Dermott when given the chance, I'm not sure anyone in the organization has that trust in him. Seems like an attractive deal for Seattle to pick up.

Have to think. A 2 year deal is more appealing to Seattle.

I would say under normal circumstances they’d normally pick him, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of center options this year through the expansion and FA.

How is this not a lose-lose?

He doesn't improve and we just doubled our 6th man's salary

He does improve and he f***s us or leaves in two years when we have both nylander and Matthews upcoming.

Finally get a little cap flexibility and we blow it on this and also give Simmonds two years at above his value

We're just not learning at all.

I guess it makes sense if they're trying to get them to not take Kerfoot but this is still a borderline deal even for that.

Not to mention it just screws us with BOGO

Seattle given the choice between Holl and Kerfoot, likely takes Kerfoot. Holl is what he is, about to turn 30, NHL caliber Dman...not as hot away from Muzzin. For an extra 1.5m, Seattle can take Kerfoot, a guy from the west coast (BC), PP guy, PK guy, center/wing versatility, and 26 years of age. Kerfoot makes a lot more sense for Seattle imo. I think if the Leafs wanna keep Kerfoot, they'd be better to dangle Dermott and protect Holl. Dermott has more appeal to Seattle I'd think.
Kerfoot, Engvall, Dermott available...I think they take Dermott tbh

Unless they want to take the gamble on the short term I don't think 1.5 is a number that you jump at Dermott
